'''Prickly Piranha Plants''' are a purple sub-species of [[Super Piranha Plant]] first appearing in the game ''[[Super Mario Galaxy]]''. They are basically bigger, purple Piranha Plants whose stem is covered in spikes. To attack, a Prickly Piranha Plant attempts to slam its head into [[Mario]] or [[Luigi]]. It can be defeated by hitting it with [[Stretch Plant]]s, by stomping it after it has slammed its head on the ground or shooting it with a fireball as [[Fire Mario]]. Some are necessary to be defeated in order to make a [[beanstalk]] to grow so Mario (or Luigi) can proceed.

They reappear in ''[[Super Mario Galaxy 2]]'' with the same behavior, though they are very rare. The game also introduces a new variation called the [[Spiky Piranha Plant]], which attacks in a similar way, but is black and cannot be stomped due the spikes on its head.

The Prickly Piranha Plant,[1] also known as the Spiky Piranha Plant,[2] is a black variant of Spiny Piranha Plant that appears in Super Mario Galaxy 2.

History[edit]

Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]

Prickly Piranha Plants are enemies in Super Mario Galaxy 2. They attack in the same way as its purple counterpart, which is by slamming its head onto the ground. However, unlike the purple counterpart, the player cannot jump on it due to its spikes and must use the nearby rubbery bulb to defeat it by hitting its head when it is down on the ground. This enemy only appears in Sky Station Galaxy during the Storming the Sky Fleet mission, where it holds a key to the locked up Power Star nearby and must be defeated.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Piranha Plant becomes a small Prickly Piranha Plant for its side smash attack.[3] In Palutena's Temple, Prickly Piranha Plants (just called Prickly Piranhas) are mentioned briefly by Viridi during Palutena's Guidance dialogue for Piranha Plant.
