An Amazing Flyin' Hammer Brother (alternatively spelled Amazing Flying Hammer Brother,[1] and also occasionally shortened to A. F. H. Bro) is a special variety of Hammer Bro that first appears in Super Mario World.

History[edit]

Super Mario series[edit]

Super Mario World / Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2[edit]

Amazing Flyin' Hammer Brothers are first encountered in Donut Plains 4 in Super Mario World and its reissue. They hover around on two-block versions of Flying Platforms that swing back and forth. Amazing Flyin' Hammer Brothers attack by tossing hammers from their swooping platforms, and the enemies can be defeated by various methods, most commonly hitting the platforms from below; they can also be defeated with a stomp or fireball, though the hammers make it somewhat difficult to do so without taking damage. When an Amazing Flyin' Hammer Brother is defeated, the platform remains onscreen and continues on its original flight path; however, if the platform's rider is somehow defeated before the platform itself begins to move, it instead stays in place.

During the enemy cast roll in the game's credits, the Amazing Flyin' Hammer Brother's platform resembles gray Empty Blocks instead of gray Rotating Blocks.

In Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3, a lone Amazing Flyin' Hammer Brother appears near the beginning of the World-e level Slip Slidin' Away. It retains its appearance and behavior from Super Mario World.

Super Mario-kun[edit]

A singular Amazing Flyin' Hammer Bro appears in the first volume of Super Mario-kun, in chapters 10 and 11. He is a hammer smithy and works with his Flying Platform's sentient blocks. He reveals to them that he made a plan to defeat Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi, and he created a lot of little hammers and one big hammer for them. The Hammer Bro, riding his platform, attacks the trio by tossing the big hammer. From its head, the little hammers come out, pound the three protagonists, and trap them inside the big hammer's head. Taking the big hammer, Amazing Flyin' Hammer Bro instructs the platform to take them to Bowser's Castle, but the two blocks, which cannot take the weight and are angry at their boss that is shouting at them, throw both the Hammer Bro and the big hammer down, releasing the prisoner. Angry, the Hammer Bro brawls with the blocks, but Mario tries to stop them, telling them that friends should not fight, at which point the Hammer Bro and the platform realize Mario and his friends are free and proceed to attack them. Amazing Flyin' Hammer Bro then throws a flying homing hammer to Mario, and it pounds him into a block. Using the block as an armor, Mario tries to attack the Hammer Bro, but the Hammer Bro attacks him with the little hammers, destroying his block-armor. Inside the destroyed block, Mario finds a Dragon Coin, which Yoshi eats, transforming him into Shield Yoshi. With the cape back, Mario grabs Shield Yoshi and tries again to attack the Hammer Bro, protecting himself with Yoshi. Amazing Flyin' Hammer Bro then tries to stop Mario with the big hammer as a last resort, but the Hammer Bro ends up sticking it into Yoshi's mouth, allowing Mario to punch the Hammer Bro, defeating him.

In the very next chapter, Amazing Flyin' Hammer Bro returns to Bowser's Castle, where he gets brutally punished by Bowser for his failure. Later, when Bowser tries to prove to Peach that he is strong, by ordering Kamek to turn him into a block so that the minions can attack him and he can show he can withstand the pounding, Amazing Flyin' Hammer Bro joins the pounding, shouting, "Revenge time!"

Dinosaur Dilemma[edit]

One Amazing Flyin' Hammer Brother appears in the Nintendo Adventure Book Dinosaur Dilemma, capturing the remaining dinosaurs in Dinosaur Island while they, Mario, and Yoshi are looking for food near Lake Trilobite. The Amazing Flyin' Hammer Brother threatens to capture Yoshi as well but is scared off by Mario.

Super Princess Peach[edit]

Amazing Flyin' Hammer Brothers, their name shortened to A. F. H. Bros., make a reappearance in Super Princess Peach, retaining their appearance and behavior from previous games. They appear only in Giddy Sky. The game also introduces a sleeping "Calm" variant called a C. A. F. H. Bro, which is comparatively more common. Strangely, Peach can instantly defeat the enemy by simply touching it if it is close enough to the ground.

Nintendo Monopoly[edit]

On the board of the original version of Nintendo Monopoly, an Amazing Flyin' Hammer Brother can be seen in a Super Mario World screenshot.

Paper Mario: The Origami King[edit]

While Amazing Flyin' Hammer Brothers do not physically appear in Paper Mario: The Origami King, one is seen in concept artMedia:PMTOK Musee Champignon art 128.png for Folded Soldiers.
