The '''Freezeflame Galaxy''' is one of the five [[Bedroom]] galaxies in the game ''[[Super Mario Galaxy]]''. It requires the use of both the [[Fire Flower]] and the [[Ice Flower]] to complete. Half of this galaxy consists of freezing water and ice, while the other half consists of molten fire and [[lava]]. [[Baron Brrr]] resides on the icy half of the galaxy. The galaxy appears to be mainly divided into three large planets. One is an icy planet, the second is a lava planet, and the third is a combination of both fire and ice with a rock-like core. There are also two minor planetoids of note; the first of which resembles a large ring of ice, and is the first planet that Mario lands on when he enters the galaxy. The second planet is one that features alternating paths of both lava and ice, and is first encountered in the "Hot and Cold Collide" level. This is also where [[Cosmic Mario]] is raced later, only without the lava parts present. The galaxy's name is presumably a pun of "[[wikipedia:Freeze frame shot|freeze frame]]". It is also based on the fact that the galaxy has both ice and lava.

The cold portion of this galaxy is featured most prominently; four out of its six missions solely take place on icy planetoids. [[Baron Brrr]], the galaxy's boss, also resides on the icy half. Two rolling boulders are also found rolling along the inner side of the ring. The Freezy Peak Planet is essentially the main planet in the galaxy, as it is the most often visited by Mario. It is large planet that consists of a very high and rocky mountain with three levels of freezing lakes of [[Cold water]]. There is a large ice slide at the beginning of the planet and a second, smaller one hidden above the first lake. After taking the Launch Star to this planet, Mario will land on the first ice slide and end up on a small icy area inhabited by [[Goomba]]s. This planet is probably the largest planet encountered in the galaxy. It consists of a large round sphere of cooled magma, through the center of which runs a large fissure filled with molten lava. When Mario flies to this planet, he lands on a small stone platform located within the fissure. There are also multiple other platforms located inside the fissure, which prevent Mario from falling in the lava. These planets are actually composed of many small non-gravitational alternating platforms made of pure ice or lava. There are also several rock platforms with snow on them, which serve as resting platforms for Mario when he ice skates across it. In ''Hot and Cold Collide'', this is the final planet that is encountered in the level. Mario must use the [[Ice Flower]] to ice skate across the lava portions (as well as the ice portions) to reach the Power Star hovering over the last platform. As Mario approaches the Starting Planet in this galaxy, he flies past these three inaccessible spherical planets of pure lava, which look like three small suns, or the balls of lava lodged into the Starting Planet in Hot and Cold Collide.
[[Mario]] begins the level on the Ice Ring Planet. After talking to a [[Penguin]], he must utilize his ice skating abilities pursue it around the ice ring and catch it. The Penguin will then allow Mario to use his [[Launch Star]], after making a comment on how he has a small chance of surviving. Once Mario uses the Launch Star, he will be taken to the Freezy Peak Planet. Mario must proceed to jump across the floating ice platforms, which lead to an Ice Flower. Mario must utilize this Ice Flower to skate across the water, climb up the rock platforms, and freeze the jets of water to make it to the next platform. Mario must go up and avoid the [[Sliding Stone]] that try to push Mario into the water. Afterwards, Mario will end up on a new platform. He must follow the platform to another set of floating ice platforms, which Mario must jump across to find another Ice Flower. Mario must utilize this Ice Flower to skate up, use the [[Bomp]]s as platforms, and activate the Sling Star. This Sling Star will shoot Mario up to a jet of water, which the Ice Flower will freeze. Jumping up from the water, Mario will encounter [[Baron Brrr]]. To defeat this boss, Mario must use the Ice Flower to get on the platform the Baron is on, avoiding the clumps of ice the Baron throws. When on the platform, Mario must get close to the Baron and spin to cool him down. Then, Mario must spin the Baron again while the Baron is defenseless. Mario must do this three times, avoiding the shockwaves and Li'l Brrs that he summons, to defeat him. After the player defeats Baron Brrr, the [[Power Star]] will appear.

On this planet, the player must be cautious of the red [[Urchin]]s rolling around many of the platforms as well as the [[fireball]]s springing up from the [[lava]]. Once Mario obtains the [[Fire Flower]], he will gain the ability to cast fireballs at his enemies, allowing him to defeat red Urchins as well as light torches. Every time Mario lights a pair of torches, a new path will open for him, revealing the way to the next area. He must continue to progress through the level, until he reaches a cage with the [[Power Star]] behind it. He must carefully make his way across a pool of lava to two more torches on either side of the cage, which will open when both torches have been lit. Mario once again starts the level on the Ice Ring Planet, only now, the outer rim of it has been covered in fire and molten fireballs now encircle the planet. Carefully avoiding the fireballs, Mario must make his way to the other side of the planet, where he has to [[Spin]] to break the Launch Star out of an ice crystal. He will then fly to the Hot and Cold Planet. Mario must avoid the many [[Urchin]]s on the ice side of the planet and go to the other side of the area, where there is an ice wall and a valve surrounded by Urchins. Mario must spin a valve to open a large door and reveal the passage to the fire side of the planet. Mario will then encounter a double-sided cage that contains a [[Fire Flower]]. He must work his way around to the other side of the cage, avoiding the rising lava and the Urchins, where he will have to spin another valve to open it. Collecting the Fire Flower, the player must quickly run back to the icy side of the planet and light the two torches near the landing point. When the Launch Star appears, the player will be taken to the Ice and Lava Platform Planets, where Mario must use the [[Ice Flower]] to ice skate across the lava plaforms (as well as the ice platforms) until he reaches the final platform, where the [[Power Star]] awaits.

This level can only be accessed when a [[Purple Comet]] is in orbit. The player needs to collect all 100 [[Purple Coin]]s hidden throughout the Freezy Peak Planet, many of which can be found in hard-to-reach areas on the icy mountain which comprises almost the entire planet. No Purple Coins are found inside cold water according to Purple Toad near the beginning point. After all 100 Purple Coins have been collected, the [[Power Star]] will appear close to the ice slide near the beginning of the planet. If the player looks into the background on the starting planet, it will still be covered with lava.

In order to complete this level, Mario must follow the exact same procedure as in ''The Frozen Peak of Baron Brrr'', (starting on the Ice Ring Planet and progressing to the Freezy Peak Planet). When Mario jumps across the first set of water jets, instead of going up to the Bomps, he must go right to a second set of water jets, where there is a [[1-Up Mushroom]]. Utilizing his Triple Jump ability, Mario must reach a new platform with a Sling Star, which will take him to the other side of a mountain. Here he will encounter multiple [[Bomp|Bomps]] and several snowmen blocking his path, which he must destroy using the [[Fire Flower]]. He must then continue to climb to the top of the peak, now avoiding Boulders and Ice Swoopers. After wall-jumping up near the peak of the mountain, Mario can claim the Power Star.

The Freezeflame Galaxy is a galaxy in Super Mario Galaxy, accessed via the Bedroom. Its theme is the contrast between hot and cold environments, with roughly half of the areas visited being freezing landscapes covered in ice and snow, while the other half consists of ruins above pools of lava, inhabited by fire enemies. The cold portion of this galaxy is featured most prominently; four out of its six missions solely take place on icy planetoids. Baron Brrr, the galaxy's boss, also resides on the icy half. The name of this area is a play on the term "freezeframe".

While this galaxy does not return in Super Mario Galaxy 2, the Shiverburn Galaxy is similar in both its name and concept. The two galaxies also share the same background music.

Starting Planet[edit]

The ice planet infused with balls of lava.

The starting planet of the Freezeflame Galaxy is a toroidal mass of ice with several crystals and stone stumps on the surface. This planet has its own gravitational pull, allowing Mario to explore its underside. Two boulders roll along the inner side of the ring. The first time Mario lands here, he must ice skate around it to catch a small Penguin and make the Launch Star appear. In Freezeflame's Blistering Core, Mario must collect five Star Chips to make five Pull Stars and the Launch Star appear. In Hot and Cold Collide, this planet becomes infused with balls of fire and lava.

Freezy Peak[edit]

Freezy Peak[1] is essentially the main planet in the galaxy, as it is the most often visited by Mario. It is a large planet in the shape of a very high and rocky mountain with three levels of lakes of freezing water. Mario first lands on a large ice slide at the base of the mountain; a second, smaller slide is hidden above the first lake. The slide ends before a small icy area inhabited by Goombas. The player can climb the three lake sections with the help of the Ice Flower and Bomps. Baron Brrr resides at the top lake. Higher up the mountain there are icy cliffs that Mario must scale. Here, he will also find Fire Flowers and snowmen to use them on.

Lava Core Planet[edit]

This planet is the largest encountered in the galaxy. It is a large round sphere of cooled magma, through the center of which runs a large fissure filled with lava. Here, Mario has to traverse the temple-like structures and pathways rising from the lava, as well as sinking and rolling pillars. The platforms and structures seen within the fissure seem to be all that remains of what appears to be a ruined civilization that has now been inhabited by multiple Ground Urchins and Li'l Cinders. Crates are also found aplenty in this area.

This planet is only visited during the mission Freezeflame's Blistering Core.

Hot and Cold Planet[edit]

This planet is a large sphere with two circular openings on either side that connect across the middle of it by means of a small passageway. One of the sides is filled with freezing water and many Urchins. There are also a few snow covered platforms sticking up out of the water. The other side is filled with lava, where Mario will find a double-sided cage that holds a Fire Flower. In the Hot and Cold Collide mission, Mario must spin a valve on one side of the cage in order to unlock it and access the Fire Flower, which is needed to complete the level. The tides on each side of the planet alternate in level.

The background music changes depending on which side of the planet Mario is on – "Ice Mountain" is used for the icy side (like in Freezy Peak), and "Lava Path" is used for the lava side (like in the Lava Core Planet). If the player looks up by the planet, they can see the Power Star halo effect. This is the location of the Power Star from the Hot and Cold Collide level. This halo is present on all levels, regardless of the scenario that was chosen.

Ice and Lava Platforms[edit]

These are square platforms made of pure ice or lava, forming a pathway with alternating gravity directions. An Ice Flower is provided so Mario can skate across the lava platforms. This is the final planet of Hot and Cold Collide, with the Power Star resting at the end of the path. In the mission Frosty Cosmic Mario/Luigi Race, the lava platforms are replaced with additional ice platforms.

This planet is also surrounded by multiple black holes, most of them being of substantial size, which will suck Mario and Luigi in if they fall off at any point.

As Mario approaches the Starting Planet in this galaxy, he flies past these three inaccessible spherical planets of pure lava, which look like three small suns, or the balls of lava lodged into the Starting Planet in Hot and Cold Collide.
