Quawks (originally identified as a purple Squawks[1][2]) is an Animal Friend in the Donkey Kong franchise who first appears in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. Quawks received a unique name to distinguish him from the green Squawks in Japanese-localized material for Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest[citation needed] and Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble![3], which was eventually used in the English version of Donkey Kong Barrel Blast.
History
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest / Donkey Kong Land 2
Quawks only appears in one level in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest and Donkey Kong Land 2, called "Parrot Chute Panic." Here he aids Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong by grabbing onto them and slowly descending down a large Zinger hive. Quawks has no way to defend himself, so Diddy and Dixie Kong have no way of attacking enemies while holding onto them. The player can let go Quawks at any point, but after getting past certain parts of a level, Quawks will release the Kongs automatically (after warning about letting go by making a noise identical to Squawks spitting an egg), and they will have to continue from there on foot until the next Quawks or the exit.
In the Game Boy Advance version, Quawks's appearance is edited to be more purplish like in Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!
Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!
Quawks' second appearance was in Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!. His in-game sprites were not as bluish as his debut appearance, and he was given matching artwork for the time in this game.
Unlike Squawks, he does not have the ability to spit eggs at enemies; instead, he picks up barrels with his claws and drops them on the ground to hit enemies. Like all Animal Friends, Quawks is only playable until he reaches a No Animal Sign, or in this case, a "No Quawks Sign". He is the only Animal Friend who does not appear in the end credits.
Levels:
Donkey Kong 64
In Donkey Kong 64, purple parrots similar in appearance to Quawks appear as background characters in some of the game's cutscenes, along with Squawks.
Donkey Kong Barrel Blast
Quawks makes an appearance as an item in Donkey Kong Barrel Blast (along with Squawks), where he acts similarly to the Spiny Shell from the Mario Kart series; when obtained, he can be used to knock the racer who is in first place. If he is summoned by a Kong, the player who was hit will also lose all of their bananas. Unlike the Spiny Shell, it is possible for more than one Quawks to be in play during a race.
