A Cat O' 9 Tails (also stylized Cat o' 9 tails, Cat-O´-9-Tails,[1][2] Cat-O’-Nine-Tails,[3] and Cat 'O' Nine Tails[4]) is a type of enemy that appears in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. Its name is derived from a type of whip (mentioned in-game by Klubba) known as the "cat o' nine tails", possibly also deriving from the well-known saying of cats having "nine lives." They initially appear sitting in place, licking one of their paws. If a Cat O' 9 Tails notices Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong, it begins to rapidly twirl and move around, attempting to whip both Kongs with its many tails. Being hit head-on will usually damage the Kongs, but by jumping into one, they may instead end up caught in the tails. If the Kongs are caught by one of the tails as they are spinning around, the Cat O' 9 Tails flings them upwards. Though this can allow the Kongs to collect out-of-reach items, this can also put them in danger of flying into certain hazards. Cat O' 9 Tails are invulnerable to attack while they spin around, but after several seconds of spinning, a Cat O' 9 Tails becomes dizzy, leaving them vulnerable to being defeated by either being stomped or rolled into.
