Chapter 1-1: The Adventure Unfolds
In the first section of this level, Mario has to make his way to the far right of the section. On Mario's way to the far right of the section, he will see the game's first enemies, a Goomba and a Squiglet. He will also encounter the game's first Brick Blocks, the game's first Question Blocks, and the game's first Warp Pipes. He will also see a seemingly blocked off door. When Mario gets to the far right of this section, he will see Bestovius's house. He will also encounter a Save Block there. When Mario enters Bestovius's house, he will see that the room he enters does not contain another door. When Tippi notices that Mario is stuck, she will give him a short tutorial on how to use her Tattle ability. Mario successfully uses this ability on a wall in the seemingly empty room, discovering a door in the process. When Mario enters this door, he will meet Bestovius.
Upon meeting Bestovius, Mario will ask him if he can provide him with the Flip ability, an ability that enables Mario to flip between 2-D and 3-D. Bestovius will then be sceptical about the offer, saying that Mario is not the real hero that the Light Prognosticus has predicted to appear. To ensure that Mario is the hero, he asks him to pay a fee of ten thousand Coins. Mario will decline this offer, whereupon Bestovius will lower the price to all Coins Mario currently has. Should Mario decline the offer yet another time, the ability will not cost anything at all.

Upon receiving this ability, Mario will be able to proceed through the seemingly blocked off door, which will take him to the second portion of this stage. While there, he has to use the flipping ability to pass an otherwise insurmountable Warp Pipe. He will also see the game's first Koopa Troopas. When there, he will also be able to grab the Catch Card for Goombas. Afterwards, he will be faced with a gap too large for him to leap over. He will then have to utilise the Flip ability once again to find that there is a pathway in the background, which Mario will pass. He will then encounter the game's first Sproing-Oing, and the game's first Squig.
Upon making it to the third section of the level, Mario will encounter some high walls. He can chose between either jumping on the Brick Blocks that are positioned before a wall, or to Flip to 3-D. If he chooses the second alternative, he will see that there are several Squiglets hiding behind each wall.
When he makes it to the fourth section, he will be able to use the game's first Star. He will then make his way to the end of the section, defeating each enemy he passes in the process. In this section, the first Paragoombas, and the first Piranha Plants will be seen. Upon reaching the rightmost part of this area, he may flip to 3-D, revealing a pathway that will take him to a chest with the Catch Card for Koopa Troopas.
When he makes it to the fifth and final section of this level, he will be granted by a Star Block. When Mario hits the block, it will end the level.

Lineland
Mario contemplating how to get across in Lineland.

Lineland is the setting of Chapter 1 in Super Paper Mario. Its skies are full of strange, surreal mathematical formulas, such as (translated into literary form) "Fire Flower is greater than or equal to some kind of Block divided by Warp Pipe."

Lineland's Chapter 1-1 pays a homage to the original Super Mario Bros. with its level design, which resembled the classic Level 1-1 throught its positioning of Items, ? Blocks, and Enemies like Goombas. The music is also remixed from the Super Mario Bros. overworld theme and the Super Mario World overworld theme.

Locations/Chapters

 • Lineland Road (Chapter 1-1: The Adventure Unfolds) is a grassy plain populated with many different species, though oddly enough most are not native to the dimension. It is also home to Bestovius, the wizard that teaches Mario how to flip.
 • Mount Lineland (Chapter 1-2: Afoot in the Foothills) is a mountain that houses Yold Town, as well as Thoreau the Pixl.
 • Yold Desert (Chapter 1-3: The Sands of Yold) serves as the first encounter with O'Chunks and the entrance to Yold Ruins.
 • Yold Ruins (Chapter 1-4: Monster of the Ruins) is where Mario and his Pixls have to explore before meeting Fracktail and getting the Pure Heart.
