The Darkmess Manta[1] (also referred to as the Manta) is a giant, flying manta made of Darkmess that appears in Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope. It is only seen in the prologue, and it covers planets in Darkmess. The Darkmess Manta is mostly blue, black, and pink in color, with a white face and claw like mouth, along with a feathered body and yellow eyes. It also serves as a one-time place for tutorial battles.
According to one of the game's concept artists, Giacomo Boni, the Darkmess Manta was created from Cursa's cloak.[2]
History[edit]
Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope[edit]
After Mario and Rabbid Peach find Rabbid Mario's overalls at Peach's Castle, some Sparks fall down from the sky, and hide behind Mario and his friends. They are fleeing from the Darkmess Manta, which arrives shortly after the Sparks do. It covers up the castle and surroundings in Darkmess, and abducts Rabbid Peach, leading to Mario and Beep-0 to save her. They land on top of the Darkmess Manta, and are transported to another dimension from a portal, where they then land on the Darkmess Manta's tail. Mario and Beep-0 then battle some Stooges. They rescue Rabbid Peach, who fights alongside them, even destroying the weak points on the Darkmess Manta, causing it to temporarily collapse, and launching the heros down to a large rock platform below. A Spark named Starburst also helps and fixes the heroes' weapons.
The three eventually jump down from the platform back on the Darkmess Manta, and Cursa appears in front of it. Starburst then tells Mario that Cursa is very evil, and that they barely escaped from it. Cursa hypnotizes Goombas to fight the heroes, but Mario and Rabbid Peach stop them. Cursa then gets angry, but Luigi, Rabbid Mario, Princess Peach, and Rabbid Luigi arrive with the WM ARC Spaceship and rescue Mario, Rabbid Peach, and Beep-0 and escape Cursa.
After everyone escapes from Cursa, it is unknown what happened to the Darkmess Manta, and Peach's Castle cannot be returned to until the ending. Curiously, all tutorial battles fought share the same location icon as Peach's Castle.
