Mole Miner Max is the fourth boss in Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D. As his name states, he is a notable Mole Miner and presumably is the leader of his species. He and his army of mole miners are the bosses of the Cave world. When first encountered, Mole Miner Max's minions are seen loading the minecarts up with bananas from Donkey Kong's hoard. Max himself is seen doing nothing except sleeping at the head of the Mole Train. However, Banjo Bottom hypnotizes Max, forcing him to start up the train and drive off with Donkey Kong's banana hoard.
General information
Physical description
Max is about three times larger than his minions. Like the other moles, Max wears a hardhat with a headlamp on it. However, unlike them, he wears an orange and yellow miner's vest. Max also has one, big tooth hanging out of his mouth and freckles on both cheeks. His concept artwork depicts him with red eyes and black pupils, unlike his minions, who appear to not have any eyes (or if they do, they are covered up by their helmets). He is about the same in color as other mole miners, though his fur is slightly darker.
Battle
During battle, his weapon of choice is a pickaxe, much like most mole miners. He uses the same fighting style as his minions; however, he is a bit faster than them, and his attacks are more unpredictable. Sometimes, he will throw his pickaxe at the Kongs; other times, he simply swings it at them but won't throw it. After Mole Miner Max has been defeated, the train starts slowing down and stops short at the edge of the cliff. Max's fate following the Kongs' departure is unknown.

The Mole Train travels through the Cave area. It's generally a hardworking train, but Banjo Tiki sends it speeding down the track. Chase after it using the separated carts, all while dodging the pickaxes thrown by the hypnotized Mole Miners. Defeat those critters when you get a chance!
|
Hypnotised by Banjo Bottom, Mole Miner Max and his workers use the Mole Train and its carts to move massive amounts of bananas around. When a tie-wearing gorilla shows up to put a stop to the Tiki Tak Tribe's plans, though, Banjo Bottom uses the train to try and escape. Whack those moles and take out Banjo Bottom!

Trivia
- Mole Miner Max is the only boss in Donkey Kong Country Returns that the player does not directly face upon entering a boss level. Instead, one must get through a group of generic enemies before actually squaring off against him.
- In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Mole Miner Max makes a minor appearance as a trophy. His trophy has his eyes fully visible, confirming that they really are colored red.
