The Midair Spin is a move that Mario and his allies can perform in many 2D Super Mario games. It consists of a 360° spin in the air that delays the character's falling for a split second, allowing them to stay in midair longer. It is possible to perform multiple Midair Spins while in midair. There is a period after a Midair Spin where another Midair Spin cannot be used, but said period ends if the player character lands on the ground.

History

New Super Mario Bros. series

The Midair Spin debuts in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and returns in New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U, and their updated rerelease. It grants Mario, Luigi, Yellow Toad, Blue Toad, Nabbit and Toadette extra air time, allowing them to cross larger gaps, avoid obstacles and correct their trajectory. Performing a Midair Spin as Propeller Mario will cause the player to fly upwards.

It is performed by attempting a Spin Jump in midair, either by shaking the Wii Remote or GamePad, or by pressing L Button, R Button, ZL Button or ZR Button on the GamePad or Wii U Pro Controller. Exclusively in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, it can also be performed by jumping in midair, though this can be disabled until the console is powered off by holding the Left Stick Button for at least three seconds on the title screen while pressing L Button and R Button.

Super Mario Maker series

The Midair Spin returns in Super Mario Maker, Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, and Super Mario Maker 2, being featured exclusively in the New Super Mario Bros. U theme. It functions identically to its appearance in New Super Mario Bros. U, and it is once again performed by pressing any of the shoulder buttons or triggers, or shaking the controller in Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS.

Super Mario Run

The Midair Spin returns in Super Mario Run, this time performed by tapping the screen in midair. It creates blue stars that contribute to starting a Coin Rush. Peach, Daisy and all Yoshis cannot use the Midair Spin in this game, because their action in the air is different. Yoshis use the Flutter Jump, Peach uses the Floaty Jump, and Daisy uses the Double Jump.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder

Super Mario Bros. Wonder carries over the Midair Spin from the New Super Mario Bros. series, functioning identically to its appearance in previous games. It is now only performed with R Button, ZR Button, or SR Button (single Joy-Con only), or by shaking the controller. Its animation has been subtly adjusted so the player character spots while spinning.

Three Badges replace the Midair Spin with a new move, that being Parachute Cap, Grappling Vine, and Boosting Spin Jump.
