The Flipswitch Galaxy is the smallest galaxy in Super Mario Galaxy, and contains only one mission. The galaxy is composed of 18 Flipswitch Panels which Mario must step on. After all of them have been turned yellow, a Power Star appears. The background is a scene from Super Mario Bros., as shown in the pictures. They periodically switch between variations of World 2-1 and World 1-2. The level features a Spring Vault that produces circular lasers which can damage Mario. Some Flipswitch Panels are also covered with moving spiked platforms that can hurt Mario. The music used for this galaxy is an arrangement of the underground theme from Super Mario Bros. This music returns in later games, such as Super Mario 3D Land, Super Mario 3D World, and Super Mario Odyssey.

The galaxy can only be unlocked if the player has at least seven Power Stars.

The Starting Planet is the largest planet in the Flipswitch Galaxy and the only accessible one. It is covered in Flipswitch Panels (18 of them exactly) and several hazards such as spiked platforms and electrical barriers. The platforms and electrical barriers move around the planet creating hazards for Mario to dodge as he goes through them.

The only other resident of the planet is a Spring Vault that releases circular shockwaves as Mario goes through the planet. Mario must flip all the Flipswitch Panels from blue to yellow and then, when they are all flipped, they will turn green. Once the Flipswitch Panels are green the laser-shooting Spring Vault will turn into a trampoline and release a Power Star for Mario to get. The electric barriers and spiked platforms will also be deactivated.

Before Mario lands on the Starting Planet, he flies past 49 Brick Blocks floating in space, which cannot be reached other than through hacking. Each of these blocks contains one coin.[1][2]
