==Early life==
Black was born in Santa Monica, California on August 28, 1969. His parents divorced at age ten. Not too long afterward, Black and his father moved to Culver City, California, but they would frequently visit his mother's home. At age thirteen, Black appeared in a commercial for the Activision game ''Pitfall!''. Black struggled during his school years, so he was enrolled at the Poseidon School, which was a private secondary school designated for students who struggled in the regular school system. After making the grades, Black enrolled at Crossroads School, where he excelled in music and drama. After graduating high school, Black enrolled at the University of California, Los Angeles until dropping out during his sophomore year, having plans to pursue a career in entertainment.

Black made his big screen debut in ''Bob Roberts'', portraying Roger Davis, which released in 1992.
In 2003, Black's first big breakthrough finally came to blight, where he starred in the ''School of Rock'', portraying as Dewey Finn, a musician who is fired from his band and poses as his roommate to become a substitute teacher, trying to turn a class of students into a supergroup band. He did the voice of Lenny in ''Shark Tale'', released in 2004. In late 2005, Black next big breakthrough came where he portrayed Carl Denham in the second remake of ''King Kong''.

Aside from acting, Black is only a few celebrities in the world who are talented musicians while also being actors. Black formed a band known as Tenacious D with Kyle Gass in 1994. His band has released four studio albums, with one of them most notably being ''The Pick of Destiny''. Two tracks from the album are playable tracks in musical rhythm games; "The Metal" is a playable track in ''Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock'', while "Master Exploder" is playable in ''Rock Band 2'' and ''Guitar Hero: Van Halen''.
