Koins are a type of Kremling that appear in Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! and Donkey Kong Land III. Koins wear a bucket on their head and carry around a trash can lid as a shield, and a DK Coin is attached to it. Their name is a pun on the word coin. By defeating the Koin, Dixie Kong and Kiddy Kong can acquire its DK Coin. To defeat a Koin, the Kongs often have to throw a Steel Barrel at the wall behind Koin, causing it to bounce off and roll into Koin from behind.
History
Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!
In Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!, a Koin appears in every level of the game.
If the Kongs themselves approach a Koin from the front or attempt to jump on Koin, he bounces the Kongs back using his shield. Koin moves his shield in the directions that the Kongs are in. If the Kongs throw a Steel Barrel at Koin's armor, it bounces off. When the Kongs defeat a Koin with a Steel Barrel, they must go to the DK Coin, which appears in Koin's spot to collect it. A Koin often appears at the end of a level. If the Kongs replay a level where they have collected its DK Coin, the DK Coin is no longer shown on Koin's shield.
Some Koins can only be defeated if a Bazuka shoots a Steel Barrel at Koin. In such cases, the Kongs often have to use a Switch Barrel to change Bazuka's TNT Barrels to Steel Barrels. In a few levels, the Kongs only have one chance at defeating Koin, if they can only get a nearby Steel Barrel by crossing a No Animal Sign with an Animal Friend. If they fail to defeat Koin with the Steel Barrel, they must restart the entire level to get another chance.
Koins have pink variant in the level Koindozer Klamber, named Koindozers. Unlike Koins, the Koindozers attempt to damage the Kongs by pushing them into the pits with their shield.
In the ending's Dixie Kong's Photo Album, a Koin is shown under the Kremling Kreeps category.
In certain levels of the Game Boy Advance remake, the Kongs can defeat a Koin using a TNT Barrel.[1]
Donkey Kong Land III
In Donkey Kong Land III, Koins mostly retain their role from their debut appearance. Every Koin in the game must be defeated with the common method of throwing a Steel Barrel behind it. The Kongs automatically obtain the DK Coin when they defeat Koin, and this change was kept in the Game Boy Advance remake of Donkey Kong Country 3.
Unlike Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!, Koins do not appear in the underwater levels because they do not have a cave at the end with the Koin. The DK Coin itself is hidden somewhere in the level, much like in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest and Donkey Kong Land 2.
