Morty Moles[1] are a giant species related to Monty Moles that appear in Super Mario 3D Land. They resemble Mega Moles, but have a mahogany fur color, tan belly, do not wear sunglasses, and are susceptible to stomping.

History

In Super Mario 3D Land, Morty Moles are fought similarly to Rexes; they get shorter and faster after the first stomp, and are defeated on the second stomp. However, they will revert back to their regular size if they manage to hit Mario while they are short, or after a short time. A Ground Pound will defeat them in one hit. When defeated, Morty Moles will sometimes give Super Mushrooms. Morty Moles inhabit narrow tunnels in levels such as World 5-4 and 7-4 along with Monty Moles in the former.

Morty Mole has made appearances in Super Mario-kun. They are shown to be more aggressive than in Super Mario 3D Land. They also have constant open eyes (like Monty Moles after volume 18) and more muscular arms.

In volume 45, what appears to be the face of a Morty Mole can be seen on Choropū the Picasso's Road Roller.

In volume 46, a Morty Mole is the main antagonist of a chapter. The Morty Mole starts destroying the Mogura Matsuri and attacks Mario. After Mario puts on the ancient Monty Mole knight armor given by Pūko and attempts to hide in a barrel, he continues to be attacked by the Morty Mole. After Luigi wins two Statue Leaves from a raffle, the Morty Mole attempts to attack Mario and Luigi, but they counterattack the Morty Mole in their Statue forms and defeat it, saving the Mogura Matsuri.

In volume 47, a Morty Mole can be seen laughing at Yoshi amongst other enemies in the Screwtop Tower.

Trivia

  • In the files for Super Mario 3D Land, Morty Mole is labeled as "Indy", which is the Japanese name for Mega Mole; however, it is unknown if Morty Moles are intended to be redesigned Mega Moles or were merely based on them during development, as the only other connection between the two is a shared Spanish name in Encyclopedia Super Mario Bros.
