Bob Hoskins as Mario in the Super Mario Bros. Movie.
Bob Hoskins in the Super Mario Bros. live-action film.

Bob Hoskins (October 26, 1942 – ) is an Academy Award-nominated actor. He portrayed the live-action version of Mario seen in the movie Super Mario Bros., which was released in 1993. However, although he played Mario, the actor who played Luigi, John Leguizamo, got a larger role. This was due to Leguizamo being younger and more relatable.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, a British newspaper, Bob Hoskins revealed he largely hated working on the Super Mario Bros. stating: "The worst thing I ever did? Super Mario Brothers. It was a fuckin' nightmare. The whole experience was a nightmare. It had a husband-and-wife team directing, whose arrogance had been mistaken for talent. After so many weeks their own agent told them to get off the set! Fuckin' nightmare. Fuckin' idiots."

Trivia

  • Originally, Bob Hoskins didn't know Super Mario Bros. was based upon a video game; Hoskins only learned the film was based upon a video game when his son informed of this and showed him the actual game.
