King Lakitu[1] is a boss in Super Mario Galaxy 2. He is a large Lakitu that is fought in the Yoshi Star Galaxy in the mission Spiny Control. King Lakitu is the only boss whose name is not mentioned anywhere (dialogue or mission title) in the game. King Lakitu's battle theme is the same as the Mandibug Stack's and Boulder Bowl Galaxy's "Rolling Crabber Romp" mission's theme. Overall, this theme is a variation of Baron Brrr's and the Deep Dark Galaxy Undergrunt Gunner's theme from Super Mario Galaxy.

King Lakitu has a purple shell. He wears black glasses and a golden crown with red and blue gems. He also wears a red and white ruff around his neck. He rides in a purple cloud with yellow eyes that leaves a brief trail of purple smoke as it moves around. As he is attacked, he becomes angrier, eventually becoming furious. He turns red and smoke comes out of him, with his cloud looking angry instead of happy. Within the game's code, there is an unused texture of King Lakitu without his glasses.[2] King Lakitu is similar to Lakithunder from New Super Mario Bros., another Lakitu boss who rides a cloud capable of shooting lightning bolts.

King Lakitu mainly attacks by throwing Spinies at Mario. Mario needs to use Yoshi for the battle. After King Lakitu throws a Spiny, Mario needs to use Yoshi to eat it. After eating the Spiny, Yoshi needs to spit it out at King Lakitu. He can be stunned by shooting a Star Bit at him. Throughout the battle, he occasionally stops and laughs at the player, leaving him open to be attacked. After he is hit with a Spiny, King Lakitu throws more Spinies, moves at a faster pace, and begins a different attack that involves him going into the foreground and moving around the stage, releasing lightning from underneath his cloud. This attack instantly defeats Yoshi if hit. After the attack, King Lakitu continues throwing Spinies. After he is hit again, he becomes enraged and throws even more Spinies. After he is hit once more, he is knocked back and falls through his cloud. Mario is granted the Power Star after this. If the player leaves the arena while battling King Lakitu and waits for a few seconds, King Lakitu sleeps until the player re-enters the arena.
