Spin Drills are items that appear in Super Mario Galaxy 2. Mario can pick up a Spin Drill and drill directly through planets and dirt. When standing on a spherical planet, the player can use the Drill to go through the surface to the other side by shaking the Wii Remote. The Spin Drill can also uncover hidden inside areas of planets that are otherwise unaccessible. It cannot drill through hard/metallic/un-drillable surfaces. If Mario gets hit or touches a Launch Star while holding the Spin Drill, it will disappear. It plays a major role in the Spin-Dig Galaxy, but it re-appears in later galaxies such as the Supermassive Galaxy, where it is used to defeat 3 Gargantua Koopa Troopas, the Flipsville Galaxy during its Silver Stars mission and Purple Coin mission, Bowser's Galaxy Generator and Cosmic Cove Galaxy, at the Exploring the Cosmic Cavern level.Players can't let go of the spin drill unless they get hurt.(Mario is stupid for not letting go of the spin drill)

Lubba, Super Mario Galaxy 2

The Spin Drill is an item in Super Mario Galaxy 2. It lets the user dig straight down through dirt by shaking the Wii Remote. It can be used to cross through to the opposite side of a planetoid or to reach cavities inside. Using the Spin Drill doubles as an attack, defeating enemies standing where Mario or Luigi emerges. The Spin Drill ricochets off hard materials such as metal; sloped hard surfaces underground can change the user's trajectory.

Despite being held (even making the same sound when picked up as a Green Shell), the Spin Drill functions as a power-up; it cannot be dropped unless the user gets hit, touches a Launch Star, or enters a pipe, and it disappears in the process. Holding a Spin Drill prevents Mario or Luigi from performing certain moves such as the crouch, backward somersault, and long jump, but he can still side-somersault and wall-jump.

The Spin Drill appears in Spin-Dig Galaxy, Supermassive Galaxy (to defeat three Big Koopa Troopas), Flipsville Galaxy (during the missions Flipsville's New Digs and Purple Coin Spin Speed Run), the Cosmic Cove Galaxy (at the last planetoid of the mission Exploring the Cosmic Cavern), and Bowser's Galaxy Generator.

An item with a similar function, called the Drill Mushroom, appears in Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
