When first encountered, Bessie Bass is only slightly larger than a Yoshi; through the use of his magic, Kamek was able to grow Bessie to monstrous proportions.
In battle, the water rises, and Bessie Bass attempts to attack Yellow Yoshi by swimming through platforms, making small leaps through the water, or by a high leap out of the water, attempting to eat Yellow Yoshi. If Yellow Yoshi is eaten, Bessie Bass chews and spits Yellow Yoshi out. While she is leaping out of the water and falling straight down, Yellow Yoshi needs to aim at her mouth to hit her; three hits defeat her. After the first hit, she leaps twice before performing a big leap.

In battle, Bessie would attempt to attack Yoshi by crushing him with several small leaps out of the water or by making a giant jump out of the water and would fall downward towards Yoshi jaws wide-open, trying to engulf him and leave Yoshi with his baby loose. It is only when Bessie makes one of these large leaps that it is vulnerable to an attack. While Bessie is in the air, Yoshi must hit it on the lips to injure it; hitting Bessie three times on the lips will be enough to defeat it.
In her battle against Yoshi, Bessie Bass is assisted by several falling Toober Guys, who Yoshi can swallow for eggs to fight her, though additional Yoshi Eggs fall as well.

It is unknown if Bessie is male or female - the English name sounds feminine - and if female, Bessie would technically be a Big Bertha, the female counterpart of Boss Bass from previous games which is of the same species and looks identical to Boss Bass (making her probably the only fish of the species in this game that is female, as the rest all seem to be Boss Basses).  Unlike the Big Berthas of past games, though, Bessie cannot shoot young fish out of her mouth, and with her jumping abilities, behaves much more like the males of the species.

In her battle against Yoshi, Bessie Bass is assisted by several falling Toober Guys, who Yoshi can swallow for eggs to fight her, though additional Yoshi Eggs fall as well.
