The black version of Gobblegut is fought as a secret boss in the [[Battle Belt Galaxy]], in the same manner as its standard counterpart. Six bellyache bulges are found at various intervals along Gobblegut's serpentine body. When Gobblegut burrows into the ground, the bellyache bulges will become stuck in the ground, at which point the player must attempt to [[spin]] each of the bellyache bulges, popping them and causing them to disappear. Mario can also perform a [[backflip]] and then spin to hit the bellyache bulges when they are above him. Each time one is destroyed, 10 [[Star Bit]]s are released, and Gobblegut takes more damage. When three or fewer bellyache bulges remain, Gobblegut begins to make fireballs rain, creating pools of lava where they land. When all six of Gobblegut's bellyache bulges are destroyed, it belches and explodes, and Mario is granted a [[Power Star]].

Bowser Jr., Super Mario Galaxy 2

Gobbleguts are bosses appearing mainly in Super Mario Galaxy 2. They are Chinese dragon-like creatures who encircle and burrow through a small planet. The green and black Gobbleguts are differentiated similarly to the different variations of Dino Piranha and King Kaliente, with the second Gobblegut being specified as Black Gobblegut[1] or Gobblegut (Black)[2] on the Mario Portal.

History[edit]

Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]

Gobblegut attacking Mario
Gobblegut attacking Mario

In Super Mario Galaxy 2, the green Gobblegut appears in Bowser Jr.'s Fiery Flotilla. After Bowser Jr. summons Gobblegut, the giant dragon circles the planet and eventually swoops down and crunches down on the surface of the planet in an attempt to injure Mario. When it blows steam out of its nose (making a noise akin to a train whistle), it dives down and tunnels right through the middle of the planet, thus exposing its six bellyache bulges to attack. The six bulges surrounding Gobblegut's body can be destroyed if Mario uses a spinning attack on them when they get temporarily stuck in the planet's surface while tunneling, or by doing a somersault and spin attacking a bulge. In Co-Star Mode, Co-Star Luma can also destroy any of the bulges with a spin if positioned correctly. Each bellyache bulge yields 10 Star Bits when destroyed. After three hits, Gobblegut becomes angrier and starts moving faster. After the last bellyache bulge is destroyed, Gobblegut slows down, burps, and completely explodes, releasing a Grand Star.

The player faces this Gobblegut twice, with the second fight being under the Speedy Comet conditions.

Gobblegut's bellyache bulges
Mario destroying one of Gobblegut's bellyache bulges

The black version of Gobblegut is fought as a secret boss in the Battle Belt Galaxy, in the same manner as its standard counterpart. Six bellyache bulges are found at various intervals along Gobblegut's serpentine body. When Gobblegut burrows into the ground, the bellyache bulges will become stuck in the ground, at which point the player must attempt to spin each of the bellyache bulges, popping them and causing them to disappear. Mario can also perform a backflip and then spin to hit the bellyache bulges when they are above him. Each time one is destroyed, 10 Star Bits are released, and Gobblegut takes more damage. When three or fewer bellyache bulges remain, Gobblegut begins to make fireballs rain, creating pools of lava where they land. When all six of Gobblegut's bellyache bulges are destroyed, it belches and explodes, and Mario is granted a Power Star.

Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[edit]

The dragon featured as the main part of the Dragon Driftway course in the Mario Kart 8 DLC pack The Legend of Zelda × Mario Kart 8 is based on Gobblegut. In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, two dragon statues appear in the battle course Dragon Palace, and their design resembles that of Gobblegut (albeit with legs).

Minecraft[edit]

In the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack in Minecraft, the Ender Dragon is retextured to resemble Gobblegut.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle[edit]

A weapon based on Gobblegut appears in Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle as the Gobblegoose, a Grenaduck for Princess Peach.

General information[edit]

Physical appearance[edit]

The original Gobblegut has a rounded snout with prominent cheeks, a pair of orange eyes that are usually kept half-lidded unless it is angered, a mouth with eight slightly rounded teeth, and a large, bulbous chin that has numerous scars on it. It has jagged, orange crystals that protrude from its head, along its body, and the tip of its tail. Its body is serpentine and is dotted with six large, red-pink bulges (referred to as "bellyache bulges" by Bowser Jr.) that are its weak points. The topside of its body is covered in swirly scales that come in pink, blue, and green, while its underside simply consists of tan skin.

The black version's scales vary between red and black in color, its skin takes on a more orange hue, and its body radiates fire that will burn Mario on contact. It also creates pools of lava whenever it tunnels through the planet. Its weak points remain the same, though the bellyache bulges are protected by the fire radiating from its body.
