From that point on, Mario has the freedom to venture into The Great Sea whenever he wants, though the number of areas he can access is limited. Nonetheless, Sea Captain Toad is still there to help Mario and Bob-omb recover the latter's spare fuse from The Princess Peach. Once it comes time for Mario and Olivia to chase after the purple streamer, the captain finds he can't go too far, due to the fog covering most of the map. He expresses his skepticism when Olivia mentions [[Captain T. Sea Captain Toad, Paper Mario: The Origami King

Sea Captain Toad is a Toad who first appears as an NPC and ally to Mario and Olivia in Paper Mario: The Origami King. He is distinguished from the other members of his species by his blue-spotted mushroom cap, white admiral hat, and turquoise scarf.

History[edit]

Sea Captain Toad is first encountered when Mario and his party arrive at Autumn Mountain, on their quest to destroy the blue streamer. During King Olly's attack on the Mushroom Kingdom, he was folded into a blue fish, left to flap helplessly on the ground near a Toad Tram station. Mario must hammer the fish to rescue Sea Captain Toad, who thanks him and immediately runs back to Toad Town, where his boat is docked.

After Mario and Olivia have caught up with their Bob-omb companion in Chestnut Valley, an engine for Sea Captain Toad's boat is ready, allowing Mario to access the Great Sea, though the number of areas he can access is limited at this point due to a thick, impassable fog covering most of the sea. If Mario chooses to venture into the fog, Sea Captain Toad finds he cannot go too far and brings up a subject of a legendary Captain T. Ode who is said to possess a Sea Chart before deciding that they should turn back.

After Olivia is trapped under a boulder in Sweetpaper Valley, Mario and Bob-omb ask Sea Captain Toad to take them out to the Great Sea, so Bob-omb can recover a spare fuse from The Princess Peach. Later, after Mario and Olivia have found Captain T. Ode in Scorching Sandpaper Desert, and if Olivia has neither visited the Great Sea nor learned about Captain T. Ode or his Sea Chart beforehand, she mentions to Sea Captain Toad about having met Captain T. Ode when his boat ventures into the fog; however, Sea Captain Toad expresses skepticism about the existence of a legendary captain. A little later, Mario and Olivia reencounter Captain T. Ode inside Musée Champignon, where he has snuck into his Super Marino submarine that is on display; Sea Captain Toad is also inside the museum to overhear Captain T. Ode proposing a trade, in which he would give Mario his Sea Chart if the Super Marino is transported to the Great Sea. Sea Captain Toad then contacts a Toad mechanic who runs Toad's Automoboots; the mechanic comes to Toad Town with his two Monty Mole assistants to attach the Super Marino to the back of Sea Captain Toad's boat.

With the Sea Chart in Mario's hand, Sea Captain Toad is able to steer Mario and Olivia through the fog to Bonehead Island (already charted in the Sea Chart) without getting lost. After solving the island's puzzles and clearing the fog, Mario receives a notification that a new engine for the boat is available at the Toad Town dock. Mario can return to Toad Town to have the Toad mechanic (who is already on the dock) replace the boat's old motor with the new engine for 5000 coins; Sea Captain Toad expresses some concern at the increase in speed, but nonetheless allows the upgrade to take place.

With the fog cleared from the Great Sea, Sea Captain Toad can steer Mario and Olivia to various other islands in the ocean, using the Sea Chart as their guide. Curiously, whenever Mario enters the Great Sea, he will always find Sea Captain Toad's boat docked right by his point of entry, regardless of where he last docked it.

At the end of the game, following the removal of all five streamers and the passing of King Olly and Olivia, Sea Captain Toad returns to land and partakes in the Origami Festival, where is shown hanging out with the Oarsman on top of a boat-like display. During the credits, he is seen alongside Captain T. Ode aboard The Princess Peach in one of the photos.
