Upon scanning certain amiibo onto the Wii U GamePad's wiiu, a pixel art version of the amiibo character will be unlocked in the course maker, allowing the player to use it any time from then on without having to scan the amiibo again. In addition to amiibo characters, Mario can also transform into certain objects, such as a ? Block. Costumes can also be unlocked through the 100 Mario Challenge mode, including the characters which have amiibo unlock conditions, or by completing certain Event Courses. | |||

There are a total of 153 costumes in the game, consisting of 100 base costumes (95 of which can be unlocked by completing the 100 Mario Challenge), and 51 additional ones that are gained either from Event Courses, free updates, or as of update version 1.40, playing 100 Mario Challenge on the Normal, Expert, and Super Expert difficulty levels. Each costume that can be unlocked via the 100 Mario challenge can be unlocked randomly at a fixed difficulty tier. Completing the 100 Mario challenge in a given difficulty gives a chance to unlock a costume from that difficulty or lower. | |||
==Mystery Suits== | This power-up was conceived after the development team was struggling to find an interesting and effective use of amiibo for the game. According to Takashi Tezuka, the art designers pitched the idea of changing Mario's sprites after drawing some of the amiibo characters in a pixel art style. | ||

Costume Mario functions the same as Super Mario, but with Small Mario's physical stature; some of the costumes, however, are slightly larger. While Mario wears a costume, he cannot wear any Buzzy Shells or Spiny Shells or collect a Fire Flower. In addition to appearance, various sound effects may also be changed to reflect the character, such as the jumping sound effects and "Course Clear" fanfare. The power-up sound effect may also be replaced by a different sound effect from the character's home series. The initial Pokémon series costumes are notable for lacking special sound effects, instead using the standard Super Mario Bros. sounds. Each character has a unique pose if the player presses and holds wii. The messages seen after finishing the 10 Mario Challenge and the 100 Mario Challenge also varies depending on the appearance of the player. | |||
Mario can only transform into Costume Mario in the Super Mario Bros. style of the game. If the player changes game styles while Mario is in his Costume Mario form, he will either change into Raccoon Mario (Super Mario Bros. 3), Cape Mario (Super Mario World), or Propeller Mario (New Super Mario Bros. U). | |||
| |||
The costumes do not follow the graphical limitations of the NES. Most of them are designed to follow the characters' official designs, usually using more than 3 colors. | |||
In Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, the Mystery Mushroom can no longer be placed, but can still spawn by a glitch. The item no longer gives Mario a costume, however, instead just giving him the same abilities as a Super Mushroom. | |||
Unused data in the files for Super Mario Maker 2 suggests that Costume Mario and Mystery Mushrooms were originally intended to return in the game, but they were scrapped from the final game for unknown reasons. However, the player can transform into Link by obtaining a Master Sword power-up in the game, which grants additional abilities. | |||
Originally, the costumes were known as Mystery Suits. | |||

| |||
*On several occasions, costumes have been released out of order. Despite being costume number 112, the Sky Pop costume and the sponsored event course in which it was introduced were released after costumes 113 to 118. Similarly, the event course costumes 129 to 131 were released after Wolf Link (unlocked via amiibo) and the 100 Mario Challenge costumes 133 to 144 were released with the 1.40 game update. Finally, costumes 150 and 151 were released after costumes 152 and 153 (Callie and Marie, respectively). | |||
*Before the version 1.41 patch was released on March 17, 2016, in the English versions of Super Mario Maker, the Wolf Link costume text was in Japanese.better source | |||
*Along with the Wolf Link event course, an event course for the Mary O. costume was released, with "test" as its title and description, implying an error concerning a premature release of the course. It was soon removed from the server, but was still playable in the time it was up, granting players the opportunity to earn the costume early.better source | |||
*Daisy, the Ice Climbers, Squirtle, Cat Mario, and Cat Peach each have a Costume Mario costume but are incompatible with their respective amiibo, since their amiibo were released long after Super Mario Maker was. This also applies to Birdo and Baby Mario, although their only amiibo are the Mario Sports Superstars amiibo cards, all of which are incompatible (even for other characters who have compatible figures). | |||

Costume Mario | |
---|---|
Applies to | Mario |
Item needed | Mystery Mushroom |
Power(s) given | Similar to Super Mario, but with Small Mario's size. Also changes Mario's sprite to look like various characters from video games and other sources. |
First appearance | Super Mario Maker (2015) |
Costume Mario[1] is the form Mario takes after touching a Mystery Mushroom, exclusive to the Wii U version of Super Mario Maker, allowing him to transform into numerous Nintendo and third-party characters, objects and groups or combinations thereof. Upon scanning certain amiibo onto the Wii U GamePad's , a pixel art version of the amiibo character will be unlocked in the course maker, allowing the player to use it any time from then on without having to scan the amiibo again. In addition to amiibo characters, Mario can also transform into certain objects, such as a ? Block. Costumes can also be unlocked through the 100 Mario Challenge mode, including the characters which have amiibo unlock conditions, or by completing certain Event Courses.
There are a total of 153 costumes in the game, consisting of 100 base costumes[2] (95 of which can be unlocked by completing the 100 Mario Challenge), and 51 additional ones that are gained either from Event Courses, free updates, or as of update version 1.40, playing 100 Mario Challenge on the Normal, Expert, and Super Expert difficulty levels. Each costume that can be unlocked via the 100 Mario challenge can be unlocked randomly at a fixed difficulty tier.[3] Completing the 100 Mario challenge in a given difficulty gives a chance to unlock a costume from that difficulty or lower.
This power-up was conceived after the development team was struggling to find an interesting and effective use of amiibo for the game. According to Takashi Tezuka, the art designers pitched the idea of changing Mario's sprites after drawing some of the amiibo characters in a pixel art style.[4]
The initial Pokémon series costumes are notable for lacking special sound effects, instead using the standard Super Mario Bros. sounds. Each character has a unique pose if the player presses and holds .
Unused data in the files for Super Mario Maker 2 suggests that Costume Mario and Mystery Mushrooms were originally intended to return in the game, but they were scrapped from the final game for unknown reasons.[5] However, the player can transform into Link by obtaining a Master Sword power-up in the game, which grants additional abilities.
Originally, the costumes were known as Mystery Suits.[6]
List of costumes[edit]
# | Image | Costume | Origin | Unlock method | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Mystery Mushroom | Super Mario Maker | Receive the fifth delivery of new course elements or Clear 100 Mario Challenge or Clear an Event Course or Clear Gnat Attack or Use any compatible amiibo |
Gives Mario a random costume that the player already unlocked. | |
2 | Mario | Super Mario Bros. | Clear 100 Mario Challenge on Easy setting or harder or Use any Mario amiibo |
A recolor of Mario's original Super Mario Bros. sprite that uses his modern colors. It has a new turning sprite that looks more accurate than the original one. Upon grabbing the Mystery Mushroom, the sound effect after exiting a pipe in Tiny-Huge Island and in the opening of Super Mario 64 can be heard. The "Course Clear" tune is replaced by the one heard after obtaining a Power Star in that game. Mario's jumping sound effects are also replaced by Super Mario World's. The death tune is the Game Over tune from Super Mario 64 and the invincibility tune is replaced with the theme of Wing Mario and Vanish Mario from that same game. This costume is also used for Big Mario's modern appearance, except the Big Mario version can wear Buzzy Shells and Spiny Shells and doesn't have any of the costume version's unique sound effects. | |
3 | Peach | Super Mario Bros. | Clear 100 Mario Challenge on Normal setting or harder or Use any Peach amiibo |
Based on Peach's modern appearance as opposed to her original NES sprite from Super Mario Bros. Upon touching the Mystery Mushroom, the mushroom pickup sound from Super Mario Bros. 2 will play. The jumping sound, death jingle, and "Course Clear" fanfare are also replaced by their Super Mario Bros. 2 equivalents. Peach also takes out her parasol when she jumps or when the player presses . Upon clearing the 10-Mario Challenge or 100 Mario Challenge on Easy, in this suit, Toad will say, "Princess Peach?! How did you escape?! ...Oh. It's just a costume." Completing 100 Mario Challenge on Normal, Expert, or Super Expert and reaching the end cutscene with it will cause Princess Peach to say "You look strangely familiar... Thank you so much for making it all the way here!" as opposed to "Thank you, Mario. You're my hero!" and "Oh, Mario! It can't have been easy to make it here. You truly are my hero!" from the Normal and Expert or Super Expert settings of the 100 Mario Challenge, respectively. | |
4 | Luigi | Super Mario Bros. | Clear 100 Mario Challenge on Normal setting or harder or Use any Luigi amiibo |
A recolor of his original NES sprite from Super Mario Bros. that uses his modern colors. Therefore, it has the same poses as his brother's. The "Course Clear" and "lose a life" tunes are replaced by the ones heard after obtaining a boss key and getting a Game Over from Luigi's Mansion, respectively. Upon getting the Mystery Mushroom, Luigi's voice can be heard shouting, "Yeah!". | |
5 | Bowser | Super Mario Bros. | Clear 100 Mario Challenge on Expert setting or harder or Use any Bowser amiibo |
Based on Bowser's modern design as opposed to his original Super Mario Bros. appearance. When touching a Mystery Mushroom, the player will hear the organ sound that played when Bowser appeared in the final battle in Super Mario World. The "Course Clear" fanfare is also replaced by the full version of said sound. The "lose a life" is the sound used for Bowser being defeated in Super Mario Bros. If the player completes the 10 Mario Challenge, or 100 Mario Challenge on Easy, while wearing the Bowser costume and watches the end cutscene, Toad will say, "B-B-Bowser? Aaaaghhhh! I thought you'd taken the princess to another castle!" as opposed to, "Mario! It's terrible! Princess Peach has been taken to another castle!" Completing 100 Mario Challenge on Normal, Expert, or Super Expert and reaching the end cutscene with it will cause Princess Peach to say "Bowser?! Thanks for saving me... from yourself?" as opposed to "Thank you, Mario. You're my hero!" and "Oh, Mario! It can't have been easy to make it here. You truly are my hero!" from the Normal and Expert or Super Expert settings of the 100 Mario Challenge, respectively. | |
6 | Goomba | Super Mario Bros. | Unlock the Mystery Mushroom course element or Use any Goomba amiibo |
Has a red coloration similar to that of a red Paragoomba, possibly to differentiate it from the enemy Goombas. Pressing causes it to be squished. | |
7 | ? Block | Super Mario Bros. | Unlock the Mystery Mushroom course element | Resembles a ? Box. Mario's legs can be seen underneath it when moving. Pressing causes it to change color. Unlike normal ? Blocks, this costume does not flash. | |
8 | Trampoline | Super Mario Bros. | Unlock the Mystery Mushroom course element | Based on its modern design opposed to its original NES sprite from Super Mario Bros. The jump sound has changed to the sound when something bounces on a trampoline. Pressing and holding will turn the Trampoline into its original sprite from Super Mario Bros. | |
9 | Toad | Super Mario Bros. | Clear 100 Mario Challenge on Easy setting or harder or Use any Toad amiibo |
Based on Toad's modern design as opposed to his original NES sprite from Super Mario Bros., as well as the Pixel Toad from Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. Toad will shout "Here I go!" upon touching the Mystery Mushroom. Upon clearing the 10-Mario Challenge or 100 Mario Challenge on Easy, in this suit, the kidnapped Toad will say "Ah, Captain! It's terrible! Princess Peach has been taken to another castle!" to Mario wearing the Toad costume, in reference to Captain Toad. Upon clearing 10-Mario Challenge or 100 Mario Challenge on Normal, Expert, or Super Expert in this suit, Princess Peach will say "Thank you, Toad! I can always count on you!". | |
10 | Bowser Jr. | Super Mario Sunshine | Clear 100 Mario Challenge on Normal setting or harder or Use any Bowser Jr. amiibo |
Bowser Jr. himself has his palette based on Bowser's original sprite in Super Mario Bros. However, he appears in his Junior Clown Car. When the player transforms, the sound of Bowser Jr. laughing from New Super Mario Bros. Wii is heard. The course clear and death music are from Super Mario Bros., but voice clips from Mario Kart Wii are added. His running sound is the sound of the Junior Clown Car moving, and his jump sound is his own jumping sound. His running animation is based on the Clown Kart Dash, his side special move in the Super Smash Bros. series, and when swimming, a bubble encloses the Junior Clown Car. | |
11 | Mario (Silver) | Super Mario Maker | Clear 100 Mario Challenge on Expert setting or harder or Use the Mario - Silver Edition amiibo from the Super Mario series |
A silver palette swap of Mario's modernized Super Mario Bros. sprite. The Gold Mario power-up sound effect from New Super Mario Bros. 2 can be heard when transforming into Silver Mario and sparkling sound effects are heard while the transformation is active. The Super Star music is also changed to Metal Mario's theme from Super Mario 64. | |
12 | Mario (Gold) | Super Mario Maker | Clear 100 Mario Challenge on Expert setting or harder or Use the Mario - Gold Edition amiibo from the Super Mario series |
A golden palette swap of Mario's modernized Super Mario Bros. sprite. The Gold Mario power-up sound effect from New Super Mario Bros. 2 can be heard when transforming into Gold Mario, and sparkling sound effects are heard while the transformation is active. The Super Star theme is also changed to Metal Mario's theme from Super Mario 64. | |
13 | Builder Mario | Super Mario Maker | Clear normal Gnat Attack for the first time | A pixel art rendition of the attire Mario wears on the boxart and promotional art. Upon transformation, the "Super Mario Maker!" shout from the title screen is heard. In addition, the normal Super Mario Bros. power-up sound is retained, the "course clear" tune is the start-up jingle from Super Mario Maker, and the "lose a life" sound is changed to the Game Over sound from Gnat Attack. Pressing on the Wii U will make Builder Mario take out a hammer. | |
14 | Yoshi | Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island | Clear 100 Mario Challenge on Easy setting or harder or Use any Yoshi amiibo |
Based on Yoshi's modern design as opposed to his sprite from Super Mario Bros. Deluxe. Upon touching a Mystery Mushroom, the sound effect that plays when climbing on Yoshi's back in Super Mario World can be heard. Yoshi's jumping sounds, the "Course Clear" fanfare, and the "lose a life" tune are taken from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Pressing causes Yoshi to turn into an egg. | |
15 | Shy Guy | Super Mario Bros. 2 | Clear 100 Mario Challenge on Easy setting or harder | Shy Guy's original sprite from Super Mario Bros. 2, with added shading and a yellow belt buckle. Similar to Peach, it uses sound effects from Super Mario Bros. 2 upon touching the Mystery Mushroom, clearing the course, and losing a life. It will turn into a Spear Guy upon pressing on the Wii U Control Pad. | |
16 | Wario | Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 | Clear 100 Mario Challenge on Easy setting or harder or Use any Wario amiibo |
Wario's costume is based on his appearance from the WarioWare games. It can also be used by tapping the first "M" in the Super Mario Maker logo on the title screen, which turns it into a "W". His sprite has a slight resemblance to the one from the WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$! microgame Super Wario Bros. Sound effects from Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 can be heard, including the "Course Clear" theme. | |
17 | Rosalina | Super Mario Galaxy | Clear 100 Mario Challenge on Normal setting or harder or Use any Rosalina amiibo |
The power-up sound effect from Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 will play upon touching the Mystery Mushroom. The "course clear" and "lose a life" jingles are replaced with the "You Got a Star" and "Too Bad" fanfares from the latter game. A pixel art Luma also appears as part of Rosalina's sprite. Rosalina is the most vocal out of the Super Mario characters; several voice clips from Super Mario 3D World can be heard: She exclaims "Here I go!" when transforming (the same as when she obtains a Double Cherry in said game), yelps when she jumps, screams "No!" when she falls into a pit, and shouts "Yay!" with the Spin sound effect from said three games while holding . | |
18 | Sidestepper | Mario Bros. | Clear 100 Mario Challenge on Expert setting or harder | An edit of the Sidestepper's original sprite from Mario Bros. It changes color from red to purple while dashing, and holding will make it angry. | |
19 | Shellcreeper | Mario Bros. | Clear 100 Mario Challenge on Expert setting or harder | An edit of the Shellcreeper's sprite from Mario Bros. Returns. It changes color from green to red while dashing, and holding will make it bare its teeth, like when it comes in contact with Mario or Luigi. | |
20 | Mario | Mario Bros. | Clear 100 Mario Challenge on Expert setting or harder | Mario's sprite from the NES version of the Mario Bros. arcade game. Upon touching the Mystery Mushroom, the "respawn" sound effect from the NES version will play. When clearing a course, the "Game Over" theme from Mario Bros. will play. He makes the losing pose when the player presses . | |
21 | Dr. Mario | Dr. Mario | Clear 100 Mario Challenge on Easy setting or harder or Use the Dr. Mario amiibo from the Super Smash Bros. series |
Mario's modernized Super Mario Bros. sprite (Costume Mario #2) further modified to look like Dr. Mario. The power-up sound effect, "course clear", and "lose a life" jingles are replaced by chain, level clear, and Game Over sound effects from the NES version of Dr. Mario, respectively. When the is pressed, Dr. Mario pulls out a capsule. | |
22 | Kart Mario | Super Mario Kart | Clear 100 Mario Challenge on Easy setting or harder | Mario's modernized Super Mario Bros. sprite (Costume Mario #2), driving a Standard Kart from Mario Kart 8. Upon touching a Mystery Mushroom, the jingle that plays prior to the start of a race in Super Mario Kart can be heard. The course clear jingle is the race finishing jingle also from Super Mario Kart as well as the race losing jingle when a life is lost. When jumping, a Super Glider appears and the tires are in anti-gravity mode. The Super Star music changes to the version from Super Mario Kart when using this suit. | |
23 | Waluigi | Mario Tennis | Clear 100 Mario Challenge on Easy setting or harder or Use any Waluigi amiibo |

Trivia[edit]
- On several occasions, costumes have been released out of order.
- Before the version 1.41 patch was released on March 17, 2016, in the English versions of Super Mario Maker, the Wolf Link costume text was in Japanese.[9][better source needed]
- Along with the Wolf Link event course, an event course for the Mary O. costume was released, with "test" as its title and description, implying an error concerning a premature release of the course. It was soon removed from the server, but was still playable in the time it was up, granting players the opportunity to earn the costume early.[10][better source needed]
- Daisy, the Ice Climbers, Squirtle, Cat Mario, and Cat Peach each have a Costume Mario costume but are incompatible with their respective amiibo, since their amiibo were released long after Super Mario Maker was. This also applies to Birdo and Baby Mario, although their only amiibo are the Mario Sports Superstars amiibo cards, all of which are incompatible (even for other characters who have compatible figures).
