World 5-1 is the first level of World 5 in Super Mario Bros. Special. It is primarily an overworld stage.

Layout

The level begins with a pipe housing a Piranha Plant, next to a pair of green Koopa Troopas beside a pair of Hard Block staircases near a pit. After this is a large pit with a tall pipe with a Piranha Plant inside of it, which leads to two rows of six ? Blocks with five Little Goombas beneath it. To the right is a pit leading to a large Hard Block staircase beside a very wide pit. After this is a Green Koopa Troopa, three Little Goombas, another Green Koopa Troopa, and a Warp Pipe with a Piranha Plant. By entering the pipe, Mario can enter a small underwater sub-area with plenty of Coins and a single Bloober, with a pipe that returns Mario to the first pipe in the level. Otherwise, beyond the Warp Pipe is a Hard Block staircase that leads to a floating rectangle of Hard Blocks, which must be used to cross a giant pit. On the other end is a small hard block staircase, some Green Koopa Troopas under a row of Brick Blocks with a Coin Block to its right, and a trio of Little Goombas, before the ground raises for a trio of ? Blocks. After a set of small pits between the ground are a pair of Green Koopa Paratroopas atop some ground with varying heights and Coins atop them, before a ? Block housing a power-up. Above the ? Block is a Hidden Block containing a Hammer. After this is a hollow staircase of Hard Blocks guarded by four Fighter Flies, with one last pit before the flagpole.
