World 8-4 is the fourth and final level of World 8 in Super Mario Bros. Special, and the final level of the game overall. It is a gauntlet of many different hazards seen in other castle levels.

Layout[edit]

The level opens with a long segment with a large Fire-Bar surrounded by two pits of Lava with a low ceiling surrounding it, forcing Mario to carefully time his jump around it. After this is another Fire-Bar in a similar setup, followed by one final Fire-Bar without pits of lava on either side, but with less room for Mario to jump around. After this is a Flimsy Lift above a pool of lava with two Podoboos, leading to a section with a staircase down with another pit containing a Podoboo. Mario must get a running start from this section, or else he will not have the momentum necessary to clear the following pits; after this staircase downward is another platform, followed by a large lava pit with two Podoboos inside that leads directly to a thin raised platform, with another large pit of lava with two Podoboos leading to another, slightly thicker raised platform, before one final large pool of lava before Mario reaches ground again. A Red Koopa Paratroopa flies to the right side of the pool of lava, and two Buzzy Beetles are falling down a staircase to the right. To the left of the Red Koopa Paratroopa is a Hidden Block, containing the stage's sole powerup. After two thin platforms over lava is a Warp Pipe containing a Piranha Plant, leading to the next section.

The next section is comprised of three smaller chambers. The first is another hallway, with a pool of lava with a small, thin platform with a Fire-Bar in its middle, and a Podoboo in the left pool of lava. Mario must have a running start to make it to the other side. On the other side is an Icicle falling from inside the ceiling, and another Warp Pipe containing a Piranha Plant, leading to the next chamber. After this is a chamber containing four Fire-Bars, floating in the air and out-of-sync with one another, leading to a Warp Pipe containing a Piranha Plant, leading to the final chamber. In the final chamber is an open room, with only the exit pipe Mario emerges from, a pillar of ground, and two Podoboos in a large pit of lava, with a Warp Pipe embedded in the side of the wall to the right. Mario must hold right against the pipe as he jumps against the wall, or else he will not enter it and will fall in the pit of lava below.

After exiting the pipe, which contains a Piranha Plant once Mario jumps off of it, Mario is faced with a zig-zagging pattern of bricks with a Fire-Bar floating in its center at the end. Past this is the final bridge, with Bowser throwing hammers and breathing fire at Mario. Once Mario touches the Ax, he will finally make his way to Princess Peach, ending the level and completing the game.

After this, a scene will play of Mario and Peach alongside the seven Mushroom Retainers, and the credits will roll alongside a cast list of the enemies featured in the game. After this is a "New Characters!" screen teasing the hidden items in the game. After pressing the jump button, the player will return to the title screen.
