World 4-2 is the second level of World 4 in Super Mario Bros. Special. It is primarily an underground level, and is similar to World 4-2 in the original Super Mario Bros..

Layout

The level starts with Mario atop a Mushroom Platform, with a pipe across a pit. Mario may either enter the pipe, or hit a few Hidden Blocks to scale a wall that blocks off a few more Mushroom Platformers, with a Hidden Block containing a 1-Up Mushroom and another pipe. Whichever pipe Mario takes, Mario will end up underground with a few Icicles above pits, leading to a narrow tunnel with a Brick Block ceiling and a trio of Little Goombas; hidden in the brick ceiling is a Coin Block only available if Mario has obtained a Super Mushroom. After this is an arrangement of 9 ? Blocks all containing coins, alongside a pair of green Koopa Troopas, beside a line of Lifts going down. To the right, there are three pipes with two Brick Blocks, one a Coin Block, the other containing a Starman, with a Little Goomba, a Buzzy Beetle, two Icicles, and three Chokichoki all leading to a Hard Block staircase beside another set of downward Lifts. Next to this is another pair of Buzzy Beetles, alongside a pair of downward Lifts, before an arrangement of rectangles made out of Hard Blocks with Little Goombas atop them, leading to an area with a ceiling of Brick Blocks. Next to the ceiling of Brick Blocks is a Hidden Block containing a powerup. After the Hard Blocks is a tall pipe in a large pit, leading to a pipe that leads back outdoors. If Mario instead climbs atop the ceiling of Brick Blocks, Mario is taken to an empty chamber with a warp pipe, though it leads nowhere and functions as a dead-end. Exiting the pipe that leads outdoors, to the left of the pipe is another Hidden Block with a powerup, and to the right are 3 rectangular arrangements of floating Hard Blocks, comprising the final staircase leading to the flagpole. However, to the left of the flagpole are two Hidden Blocks that can be used to go beyond the flagpole. Doing this leads to two squares of Hard Blocks forming a small staircase to an arrangement of Cloud Blocks spelling "HELLO!", with two hidden blocks above the "L"s: one contains a 1-Up Mushroom, and another contains another powerup. Beyond this is another pipe, which leads back to the pipe at the start of the area.
