Zipper
A Zipper in Super Mario Odyssey
Mario undoing a zipper
First appearance Super Mario Odyssey (2017)

Zippers are capturable objects in Super Mario Odyssey. A zipper holds a thin portion of the terrain in place, like how real-world zippers work but on a much grander scale. They appear only in the Lake Kingdom. When a zipper is captured, Mario controls the slider. He can move in a set direction across the teeth of the zipper, undoing the hold. (The teeth are not visible until unzipped, though a seam is apparent.) Mario can move backward to put the teeth back together to no effect, and moving back to the start makes him automatically pop out. Mario cannot release this object unless he is at the start. Once Mario moves across all of the teeth to make a full loop, the zipper disappears and the section of terrain it once held falls out and vanishes. Mario's trajectory upon leaving a zipper is custom set, so that he lands on a nearby platform. Switches, Power Moons, and coins are among the objects that can be found behind a zipper. Zippers can be found underwater; while Mario is capturing such a zipper, his air meter is absent, and when he leaves, the air meter is full.

In bonus areas, zippers are attached to blue material that either opens outward to serve as a platform or falls away without the teeth to hold it together. Their teeth are always visible, even after being unzipped, but the slider Mario uses to capture them also vanishes. Some of those zippers do not let Mario move backward. He also does not automatically pop out if he returns to the start.

Zippers cannot take damage, as they defeat enemies such as Mini Goombas and Cheep Cheeps on contact. This is true even when they are not moving.
