Robert William "Bob" Hoskins, Jr. (October 26, 1942) is an Academy Award-nominated English actor. He portrayed the live-action version of Mario seen in the movie Super Mario Bros., which was released in 1993. However, although he played Mario, the actor who played Luigi, John Leguizamo, got a larger role. This was due to Leguizamo being younger and more relatable.
Bob Hoskins did not know Super Mario Bros. was based upon a video game; Hoskins only learned the film was based upon a video game when his son informed of this and showed him the actual game.
