Ruins, also referred to as Stone Pillars, are solid objects that appear in the Lost Kingdom in Super Mario Odyssey. Ruins can be interacted with by using the Ground Pound on the highest pillar with the starburst symbol, which causes this pillar to move downwards while the opposite pillar with this symbol moves upwards. Ruins often represent stairs.
After Mario arrives at the Lost Kingdom, ruins need to be used to defeat Klepto, who steals Cappy, and Mario has to get him back to continue. A Power Moon for a mission called Chasing Klepto in the Moon Pipe sub-area can be obtained the same way.
