Talk:Mega Mole
Superstar Saga[edit]
Are these the same Monty Moles that give away prizes in MLSS? – Spike
No, they are not...at least it hasn't been confirmed. Also the Monty Moles in MLSS are much smaller. Paper Jorge ( Need to tell me something? Go to my talk page.·Contributions·) 21:21, 19 October 2006 (EDT)
Morty Mole[edit]
Prima Game's strategy guide for Super Mario 3D Land refers to these guys as Morty Mole; not sure if that's worth a mention. --Mercury Mech 03:17, 30 November 2011 (EST)
- Prima's made naming mistakes before so best not to take this too seriously, unless they're referred by the same name elsewhere. But either way I added it to the trivia section just in case. -Four Paper Heroes 03:22, 30 November 2011 (EST)
- I was going to make a TPP, but changed my mind. Like Moneybags and Coin Coffers, they should be together. Technickal 18:57, 1 December 2011 (EST)
Split Morty Mole from Mega Mole 2: Molectric Boogaloo[edit]
This talk page proposal has already been settled. Please do not edit any of the sections in the proposal. If you wish to discuss the article, do so in a new header below the proposal. |
failed to reach consensus 6-8
Coming off the success of my most recent splitting proposal, I'd like to reopen this.
To recap from my previous attempt:
Mega Moles: Brown and white, Japanese name is Indy, sunglasses, smug expression with large cheeks with circles on them and large lower lip without visible teeth, no whiskers, long pointed moleish nose and muzzle, jumping does nothing, works as a platform.
Morty Moles: Red and tan, Japanese name is Goropu (with "Indy" being a file name in the exact same situation as the aforementioned Bat), no sunglasses, neutral expression with visible tooth and smaller lower lip, has whiskers, short gopherish nose and muzzle, is defeated in two jumps, acts like a Rex.
These still seem very different to me. Literally the only similarities are being large-sized Monty Moles with a few hairs on top. However, given that we don't list Boss Bass and Big Cheep Cheep together despite Boss Bass being intended originally to be the "Giant" Cheep Cheep, I don't see why these should be listed together for being giant moles. Big Goomba and Grand Goomba also had Japanese names, yes, but at the very least they look the same, ie are simply upscaled Goombas, while these are both visually distinct from Monty.
Basically, different name in all languages, different appearance, different behavior, different weaknesses, literally the only thing they have in common is a parent species. I think if Big Bertha and Boss Bass are to be separate for having a distinction in one language, then these, who have a distinction in all languages, should also be split.
And no, saying "It's wrong because it's Prima" is still not a valid argument, particularly when the name is different in all languages.

Support, split them[edit]
- Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) Per proposal.
- Niiue (talk) Per Doc.
- Mario Kart DS Fan (talk) I agree.
- Ultimate Mr. L (talk) I don't even see how there's an argument when they're so wildly different.
- Semako (talk) Per proposal.
- Chester Alan Arthur (talk) By every rule and every precedent by this wiki these articles should be split.
Oppose, keep them together[edit]
- Wildgoosespeeder (talk) I still feel the same way as I did in the previous. This should have been put under the older proposal. Why wasn't that done?
- Yoshi the SSM (talk) This again? Per what I said in the last proposal. And the big Cheep Cheeps all have different qualities. Big Cheep Cheep is just a big Cheep Cheep, Boss Bass is the same, except it eats Mario, and Big Bertha is the same as Boss Bass, except it is a she and she has a baby. Cheep Chomp is the same as Boss Bass, except for color and similar to Spiny Cheep Cheep attacks. Very minor differences, but more than just a big Cheep Cheep. In theory, we could merge some of them, but there's more. File:BossBassEatingMario.png and File:Bertha.PNG shows the same sprite, yet we're most likely not merging them due to Big Bertha having a child to take care of. By comparing File:BigBerthaDS.png and File:NSMB MegaCheep-Cheep.png, you can clearly tell that Big Cheep Cheep in NSMB was designed after SM64DS, just like the other sprites, but this one differs due to Boss Bass eating as seen in the first picture. Only Cheep Chomps seems a likely candidate for a merge. And that's with the support of the wiki through a proposal.
- Time Turner (talk) I'd rather err on the side of caution for the moment until the dust has settled. Per all, especially LTL below.
- LinkTheLefty (talk) Per last time, and then some. I repeat: I'd rather we stick to what closest matches the game data over go into a guessing game as to why the developers labeled Morty Mole the same as Mega Mole, and I believe that is what's currently represented in the article. The proposal glosses over the fact that its internal filename in Super Mario 3D Land ("Indy") is plainly and unmistakably its Japanese name in Super Mario World, which I suspect (unintentional or not) has led to at least one ill-informed vote. Again, we've established precedent for internal names in various article content. If anything, if there are legitimate grievances about using "unseen material" such as filenames as the basis for valid information, it should be for a discussion broader than this - but as seen recently with Hatopop, just the opposite is gaining traction, and it's not like we plan to delegitimize the majority of pre-release and unused content articles anytime soon. Alterations to enemy behavior and additionally appearance are also nothing new in this franchise, especially for the jump from 2D to 3D after decades of total absence (and sometimes not nearly as long as is the case with "Mecha-Bowser" even receiving an alternate name). This version of the proposal still offers zero solution as to what to do with the big Monty Mole's appearance in Super Mario Maker, which was one of the main splitting concerns - we should have learned by now to avoid creating a shaky situation similar to the nebulous pre-merged status of Para-Beetle/Parabuzzy. Lastly, no new information has come to light since the original proposal; this would appear to be a quick recount on a separate talk page over the result making the proposer unhappy.
- TheFlameChomp (talk) Per LinkTheLefty.
- Lcrossmk8 (talk) I don't think we have enough base to guarantee that these two names are associated with different things. Per all.
- Toadette the Achiever (talk) Best to stick with this option until they appear in another game. Per all.
- Tucayo (talk) - Per all.
Comments[edit]
@WildGooseSpeeder I'm not hiding it, the information, and as such, the old proposal, was originally listed under Morty Mole due to being a more recent name, but the information was moved to Mega Mole due to being an in-game name. The talk pages weren't moved as both pages already had separate talk pages. Either way, I'm making it abundantly clear that this is the second attempt, as seen by the title. Don't be so accusative. Over 4 weeks have passed, and I'm doing this due to the support for my Bat proposal, which was an almost-identical situation. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 03:54, 10 October 2017 (EDT)
- I changed my vote reason before you commented. Still though, why wasn't this second attempt proposal below the first one? If I didn't link, the older proposal would have likely been hard to find or overlooked. Some people might not even be aware such a proposal took place or even remember. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 04:07, 10 October 2017 (EDT)
- Because I figured it should go under the current "Main Article" and not a redirect. I suppose I could link that talk page. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 04:15, 10 October 2017 (EDT)
- I agree with that fact that the first proposal that is under the redirect's talk page isn't good. What to do? Should the old proposal be moved to make things easier? Merge the entire talk contents of the redirect's talk page with this talk page? --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 04:22, 10 October 2017 (EDT)
- I have it conspicuously linked now at the top of the proposal, by the way. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 04:34, 10 October 2017 (EDT)

I admit my position is a little more relaxed since last time due to knowing some more about Super Mario Pia. However, the fact of the matter is, excepting the pattern broken by your recent Swoop/Bat proposal, we've established precedent for internal names in various article content. For example, prior to knowing the internal object filename for Phantom Guy, it was previously considered a subject separate from Polterguy (as it turns out, its filename is identical), affecting wiki organization. (In fact, Phantom Guy and Polterguy both have differing appearances, behavior, and non-internal names - basically the same arguments made for "BasaBasa" & "Indy" - so where is the urgency for that proposal?) The game's own data is certain vital information mostly left out of this round, by the way - absolutely no one was bringing up Prima except to say that it's the only source for the name Morty Mole as of now, thus a merged Mega Mole would have that as the article title. Additionally, while Super Mario Pia is better at cataloging name changes than Perfect Ban Mario Character Daijiten, honest coverage gaps still seem to happen since you have to remember the book authors are not the game developers; for example, they listed Snifit as appearing in Super Mario 64, while the enemy's Japanese name was corrected to something else in Super Mario 64 DS guides, which they did not use as reference material . Moreover, one facet important to me remains unaddressed: if this splits, does the coverage for the big Monty Mole from Super Mario Maker go into the same nebulous yet easily avoidable situation that Para-Beetle/Parabuzzy was in back when they were split? If that is the case, my stance is already settled. LinkTheLefty (talk) 09:45, 10 October 2017 (EDT)
- Also, don't you think starting this proposal fresh on another talk page without going into very much detail about the reasons it failed last time is rather misleading to others? LinkTheLefty (talk) 12:01, 10 October 2017 (EDT)
- I linked to the other proposal. And it was like 5 in the morning, so I can't be expected to have all the info for why it failed. And @YoshiTheSSM the original Japanese name for Boss Bass/Big Bertha was "Kyodai Pukupuku," literally "Giant Cheep Cheep," meaning it was originally intended to simply be a larger counterpart to Cheep Cheep back then, a role now filled by Big Cheep Cheep. That's why I brought that up. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 13:48, 10 October 2017 (EDT)

@LinkTheLefty Alright, you outright lied there. I did say that Morty Mole has Indy for a filename at the top. And regarding the "Name is not Morty," even in the current situation, the wiki uses "Mega Mole" and not Morty Mole, so don't jump to conclusions regarding my motivation behind the file name. It was actually a tiny bit of both, just for fun. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 14:38, 11 October 2017 (EDT)
- Don't name files that'll be used on the wiki for "fun". It's unhelpful. Hello, I'm Time Turner. 14:45, 11 October 2017 (EDT)
- Exactly why I haven't done so since then. Take a look at all the SS+BM sprites I uploaded last night, for instance. We all do stupid things when we're still starting out, right? Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 14:48, 11 October 2017 (EDT)

- @Doc - I refer you to image use policy, specifically "When uploading a file, be sure to give it a straightforward and meaningful name, as this makes it easier to use, is better for searching purposes and looks more professional." and "Names should be serious and professional." (Not to mention, even disregarding any particular reasoning for the title, it was -highly- anachronistic.) Also, I meant exactly what I said - reread that "recap" you wrote up for this very proposal. If people are just joining in, they're not going to have all the facts, as one case has already proven right in front of our eyes (I'd say that one might even be subject to Rule 5). Maybe for greater visibility/transparency, the proposal should've been written as a bullet point rebuttal (besides just that fake Prima part which wasn't an issue at all prior)? LinkTheLefty (talk) 15:00, 11 October 2017 (EDT)
- Sorry, I considered there to be too many details for a full recap and figured saying the filename was the same would be sufficient. As for the image name, yes that was highly immature of me and I regret it. But I still believe they should be split, as they are in practice about as alike as Colossal Koopa Paratroopa and Tub-O-Troopa, and I figured with the Bat precedent I'd have more ground. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 16:38, 11 October 2017 (EDT)
I thought about it, and realized that the file name is actually quite supportive evidence for my argument. I am on mobile, so it will take a while for me to get back here, but I want to throw this out: if Indy is the file name, the developers still consider it valid for something, and if they intended upon release for it to be Indy, why not just officially call it Indy? Instead they called it Goropu, but due to that file name indicating there still is an Indy, thst would make Goropu not a rename, but a distinct entity. Probaby, much like Bat, it was initially intended to be Indy, but to get it to work in the game in question, they had to change a lot of details; enough that they decided it should be its own thing. Hence the different name, despite how "Indy" was still in usage by them. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 16:38, 11 October 2017 (EDT)
- Adding on to this for clarity: File names really should only be used as a rather low-tier resort, because they represent plans from when the object was initially created, which may not jive with the final project. Why would this be? Because if they were to rename the object, every instance of the object's name in the code would also have to be changed, and if they had coded it enough to decide it was too different from the official Indy, the name would probably have been in there a lot, so instead of altering every instance of a name in the portion of the game people aren't intended to see, they simply kept the object name as is, to not use time for a relatively pointless endeavor and avoid potential problems arising with missing them. It's like how when we move pages, we need to fix redirects, except with no redirects in the first place. Now I'm no expert programmer, but it sounds about right to me. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 19:32, 12 October 2017 (EDT)
@ToadettetheAchiever If that's the case, you shouldn't have a problem with me merging Porcupo, Harry Hedgehog, and Porcupine, especially since the second one's original Japanese name was the same as the first one's, so it must be a rename!
@LCrossMK8 They have different Japanese names, and I explained the problem with filenames above. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 23:31, 15 October 2017 (EDT)
I think that assuming things are the same is the more unsafe, speculative option unless they look or act exactly the same, while assuming they're different is the safe option, barring the aforementioned circumstances. And as for filenames, I explained above. And from here on out, anyone who claims I didn't note the filename was Indy in the proposal shall hereby be committing slander, as I put that there next to the official Japanese name when I first made the proposal. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 23:46, 16 October 2017 (EDT)
Internal file name[edit]
I know this discussion isn't ongoing at the moment, but it's honestly pretty baffling to me that an enemy with both a different Japanese name and localized name is being lumped in with another enemy because they're called the same thing in the game files. The Bat enemy from Mario Galaxy is named the same as Swooper in the game's internal files, but has a different Japanese name and localized name (I believe it was actually split off from the Swooper article), so why these two are merged is honestly really confusing to me. Everything else seems like an assumption and not really an accurate representation of the subject of the article, considering they both have separate names. Internal files shouldn't take precedent over officially named sources, IMO. I'd make another proposal, but not entirely sure how to do that, plus I'm not the most active editor here so I don't know 100% how things work here. BubbleRevolution (talk) 14:39, 5 February 2018 (EST)
- Thank you for your support! If anything, Morty's a derived species. Also, this was initially split by an admin, then lumped together as one of countless major edits done by one particular user who never asked about any of what they did until they had been warned a few times. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 18:38, 5 February 2018 (EST)
- Yeah, they're clearly different enemies, they have different behaviors, names, and appearances, and an internal filename is not enough to base merging an article off of, IMO. It looks like the Wiki's rules state that overturning an earlier proposal can be done 4 weeks afterwards, so I'd definitely be interested in getting another proposal up to split the two. BubbleRevolution (talk) 05:25, 6 February 2018 (EST)
Split Morty Mole from Mega Mole (again)[edit]
This talk page proposal has already been settled. Please do not edit any of the sections in the proposal. If you wish to discuss the article, do so in a new header below the proposal. |
split 14-6
Deciding to propose this again, as I honestly feel like these two being lumped together is honestly inaccurate. Were I active on the wiki at the time of the last proposal (see above), I would have supported it.
Morty Moles, as they appear in Super Mario 3D Land, both appear and behave completely differently from the Mega Moles in Super Mario World. They also have completely different names in both English and Japanese, with Mega Mole being known as "Indy" in Japanese, and Morty Mole being known as "Goropū". There is also nothing that explicitly indicates the two are supposed to be the same enemy in any official material aside from the name in 3D Land's internal files, which is far from an official confirmation. The connection should definitely be noted on the page if the two are to be split.
While the internal file name being shared with Mega Mole's Japanese name is definitely worth nothing in the article, I do not feel that it is enough to go off of when determining whether or not they are intended to be the same. File names do not necessarily represent the final product, and to supersede two different official names in both languages that comes from an official source feels kind of silly to me. While I certainly think there is a connection, nothing definitively indicates they are intended to be the same enemy, at least in the final version of the game. They might have been intended to be the same enemy in early development, but an offhand name entered by a programmer that may or may not represent the finished game does not seem like it's enough to judge them to explicitly be the same enemy.
The wiki has precedent for keeping subjects named similarly in internal game files separate, most notably on the Bat page. Bats in Super Mario Galaxy use the Japanese name for Swoop, "Basabasa", in the game files, but have an official name in Japanese of "Batton". Despite the shared names, they are considered to be separate enemies, and I believe this precedent should be applied here as well. On some occasions, internal file names have been used as sources, but in those cases they were used for articles that had no explicitly confirmed English name, unlike Morty Mole.
While it's certainly possible the two could be the same enemy, and Morty Mole/Goropū could be a renaming, similar to how Boss Bass was renamed in Japanese, there is nothing explicitly confirming this, and assuming them to be the same enemy seems like pure speculation. Therefore, I propose separating the two, as there is no concrete proof that the two are intended to be identical, and I feel the wiki should not act as though the two are confirmed to be the same thing unless information stating such is found.

This may be a borderline case (considering there is official evidence on both sides of the argument), but I actually want Magnet Sparky split from Spark in a similar borderline case, so per all.
- Yoshi the SSM (talk) Switching because (a) Porplemontage (talk) supports the split and I respect that support (basically per all), (b) without this passing, the fourth proposal would be, well, too much to handle if not done according to Porplemontage's suggestion which I am worry about a little, and (c) too many supporters. I was waiting until the last day to change to support due to this last reasoning, as too many opposers would have cause this not to past.
Oppose[edit]
#Toadette the Achiever (talk) Literally nothing more has been brought up since the last time this was proposed. To those supporting: Just because there's nothing confirming a mere name change does not automatically mean there is enough information to split them. 2D enemies may behave differently when in 3D environments, hence why we don't split the 2D and 3D Goombas just because one aimlessly wanders and the other charges. And no, Bat (Super Mario Galaxy) isn't a good example, since they clearly behave differently from Swoops. Magmaarghs also clearly behave differently to Blarggs, and look drastically different anyways (the latter is not even entirely composed of lava in the TV series, nor in their official game artwork). That's not to mention that we have Parabuzzy merged with Para-Beetle. Lastly, how will we cover the information from Super Mario Maker? Really, this should just be a multi-option proposal. Per all.
- Wildgoosespeeder (talk) For the same reasons as the two failed proposals.
- Waluigi Time (talk) The differences can easily be explained by the 21-year gap between appearances. Additionally, their first appearance was a 2D game, and they reappeared in a 3D game. This wouldn't be the first time enemies had different behaviors, appearances, and even names from either of those.
- Pseudo-dino (talk) Per all.
- Mario Kart DS Fan (talk) Per All.
- YoshiFlutterJump (talk) Per all, especially Toadette the Achiever. We merged Parabuzzy and Para-Beetle, and I just don’t trust Prima's naming credibility anyway.
- LudwigVon (talk) Per all.
Comments[edit]
I'd again like to point out that the evidence they are different far outweighs the evidence they are the same. If anything, I'd say it's best to assume things are different until absolutely proven otherwise, and not assume that they're the same until proven otherwise, as that's a far more rash and speculative choice. The only thing even suggesting that they are even related is the filename, which is very low on the heirarchy for naming. The guide calls it something different, and unlike Big Boo/Big Goomba/Boss Bass/whatever, the Japanese name was never "Kyodai Choropu" or "Deka Choropu" or "Biggu Choropu," meaning it was always intended as somthing much different than simply a larger counterpart. And still, the Galaxy Bat article gives precedence for splitting off things that are very different in spite of file name and listing as "derived." That being said, the evidence that they are different is the different official names in all languages, the vastly-different durability (outright rideable vs. two-hits and squishy), and the extremely different appearances. This is not a "Big Goomba has sometimes been immune to jumps and sometimes splits when jumped on," this is a completely different situation where neither is simply a large counterpart, but a further permutation thereof with outright irreconcilable differences. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 17:53, 14 February 2018 (EST)
- @Waluigi Time Then Explain why Sumo Bro's only change was to account for terrain, while Bony Beetle only got an aesthetic change. Apparently, the file name for Magmarrgh is "Unbaba," despite it not being the same as the Blargg from SMW. But we don't have them merged. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 18:11, 14 February 2018 (EST)
- My point is that these differences could happen, not that they always happen. The difference in appearance isn't as big of a deal as you make it out to be either, it's really just dropping the sunglasses and a color swap from a game that had many of its enemies change colors later, and in the case of the Koopalings was usually inaccurate altogether. Additionally, Sumo Bro and Bony Beetle's reappearances were both in 2D games and neither of them have been in 3D games yet. -- Too Bad! Waluigi Time! 18:18, 14 February 2018 (EST)
- Massive smug lower lip vs. tooth? And again, that addresses not how Morty acts more like a Rex. Anyways, shouldn't we assume things are different when there's a large degree of ambiguity plus known different names, and not lump something with something else on absolutely tenuous terms? Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 18:21, 14 February 2018 (EST)
- Actually, Monty Moles also had the lower lip in SMW, as well as possessing sunglasses in artwork. The Mega Mole design in SMW was consistent with Monty Moles at the time, and merely updated to reflect the changes the Monty Moles have gone under over the years. The Rex behavior is easily explained by a change in game mechanics - how many enemies have you seen lately that Mario can stand on besides more "artificial" enemies (Thwomps, Whomps, mechanical enemies and the like)? There's also a precedent for changing names of enemies that have been gone for a while (Galoomba) or even if they haven't been absent very long as we just saw with Maw-Ray. -- Too Bad! Waluigi Time! 12:57, 15 February 2018 (EST)
- That sprite of Monty does not have a lower lip. It has a fat belly that extends up its chin. As for what other enemies can he simply stand on that aren't artificial, Mandibugs and Goonies both come to mind. And Galoomba has kept a consistent Japanese name, and not gone under two completely different names (that are even more different than the various "Kyodai/Biggu/Deka" enemy names). Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 13:02, 15 February 2018 (EST)
- I'm pretty sure that's a lower lip - notice the darker brown pixels near the end of the smile, which Mega Mole also has. Also, I don't think it's wise to completely discard the English names either in arguments like this, since we're an English wiki. Mandibugs are a good point, although in that case Mario is standing on their shell. As for Goonies, I'd argue that the different mechanics of the Yoshi's Island games compared to the Super Mario series make that a moot point. -- Too Bad! Waluigi Time! 13:39, 15 February 2018 (EST)
- Goonies seem to be based off of Albatoss (both albatross-like birds that sometimes are docile platforms and sometimes bomb-droppers), which was admittedly from the weirdo of the Super Mario games. However, I'd say there's enough enemy overlap between the Mario and Yoshi's Island games to count YI enemies. As for the sprite, I've worked with those exact sprites many times, and the Monty does not seem to have that smugly jutted-out lower lip, that really just appears to be its belly. A thing that sort of resembles a lower lip is on its jumping sprite, but based on the respective artwork, that seems to just be a shadow for a tooth that normally blends in. I'd like to also note that in the same interview that reveals that Mario Tennis was planned to have a "Warupichi," the developers seemed to express confusion over the confusion between Goomba and Galoomba in the West, and noted a similar relationship between Monty and Mega Moles, which in my eyes, implies that Mega Mole is less a "Big Goomba" to Monty Mole's "Goomba" and more of a "Galoomba." That is to say, less a "large counterpart" and more of a "weird estranged relative species." Of course, I may be reading too far into this, but the fact is, there's still no real solid ground saying that Mega Mole and Morty Mole are the same thing, and the brazen lack of caution required to say they definitively are is a very bad slippery slope. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 17:22, 15 February 2018 (EST)
- Furthermore, Para-Beetle and Heavy Para-Beetle are platform enemies that appear in modern games. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 01:59, 18 February 2018 (EST)
I'd like to also note that in the same interview that reveals that Mario Tennis was planned to have a "Warupichi," the developers seemed to express confusion over the confusion between Goomba and Galoomba in the West, and noted a similar relationship between Monty and Mega Moles, which in my eyes, implies that Mega Mole is less a "Big Goomba" to Monty Mole's "Goomba" and more of a "Galoomba." Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 17:22, 15 February 2018 (EST)
I'd add that Boss Bass and Cheep Chomp have the same Japanese name and nearly identical designs, but have separate articles. They have different English names, yet are both called Bakubaku (バクバク) in Japanese (and from what I can gather, are generally seen as different variants of the same enemy over there, like red and green Koopa Troopas), but have separate pages. If those two get to stay separate, then Morty Mole having separate names from Mega Mole in both English and Japanese with nothing explicitly stating that they're the same enemy should be enough to keep them separate as well. BubbleRevolution (talk) 18:14, 14 February 2018 (EST)
- That is a different proposal. What has been keeping Boss Bass and Cheep Chomp separate is the color (red vs. purple) and English names. The Big Monty Moles (I call them that due to SMMF3DS) have basically the same color (brown vs. red-ish brown). Yoshi the SSM (talk) 22:48, 14 February 2018 (EST)
- But these two have both different English names and colors. Based on precedent on the wiki, they should be separate since nothing explicitly confirms them being the same. BubbleRevolution (talk) 08:48, 15 February 2018 (EST)
- The shades are little different in color from Paragoomba and Red Paragoomba. One is a bile yellow-brown, the other is a bright mahogany. So, extremely different from each other. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 22:52, 14 February 2018 (EST)
- To both: Again, just because they are not confirmed to be the same doesn't mean that they are different either. PRIMA has been known to make some mistakes. But, usually there are other sources to be found that we can use to confirm. If not, they we can't be certain it was a mistake until we have the proof. Cheep Chomp also gets its name from PRIMA. The only difference is, the name can be found in other languages too. Color is very minor, on the other hand. While, it appears to have keep things separate, it isn't. Red Paragoomba and Paragoomba act differently in the two games the Red Paragoomba appeared in. Nintendo probably only used the Red Paragoomba's attack pattern for Super Mario Maker due to the regular ones from Super Mario Bros. 3 wouldn't go well with "create your own levels" and making it harder to incorporate, where it can be easily gotten. Gloomba is a Goomba colored blue...-ish. But, only has Super Paper Mario info with brief info of Super Mario Bros. underground Goombas. What keeps them separate is HP difference in Super Paper Mario. Also, many RPG duos who appear together and don't have separate appearances from each other aren't separate. Even though, color is a big difference between them. I know that this doesn't exactly describe SMW and SM3DL Big Monty Moles, but it is an example of color and separate names not separating them. Though, their examples are hard to replicate outside of RPGs, making it an exclusion. But, it is an example nevertheless. How things are decided is by a proposal. And two already try to do this for this article and did not pass. One person coming onto the wiki with the same information and wants to support the pass doesn't change proposals. Not usually, anyways. Yoshi the SSM (talk) 10:36, 15 February 2018 (EST)
- I understand that there's a possibility that they could be the same, but the course of action I've seen in the past on both here and other wikis has been to split articles if there's no explicit confirmation of such. Lumping them together when it contradicts the only official sources we have just doesn't seem right to me, and seems to be going completely off of assumptions. Even if they are intended to be the same enemy, if there is no explicit confirmation, then we cannot be 100% sure, and they should have separate articles until other information comes to light. Prima has made mistakes in the past, yes, but as far as I can tell, their names for the 3D Land guide, and numerous others, have been correct, and I don't see why there's any reason to doubt that currently. There doesn't appear to be any reason for the pages to be merged other than fan interpretation of an offhand name in the source code, and contradicts some stances from what I've seen on the wiki, like the previous examples with Bat and Magmaargh. And proposals can be overturned, it's part of the wiki's rules, I'm sure this isn't the first time a proposal has been challenged on here. BubbleRevolution (talk) 11:29, 15 February 2018 (EST)

Another thing, what are the German and Chinese names refer to? Yoshi the SSM (talk) 22:49, 14 February 2018 (EST)
- The German one is talking about Mega Mole. Morty Moles are called "Morty Maulwurf" over there, from what I can find. The Chinese one appears to be Morty Mole, at least from what I can gather. BubbleRevolution (talk) 11:29, 15 February 2018 (EST)
- You forgot to sig. Anyways. Why does "Mega Mole" have a German name and not a Chinese name? Yoshi the SSM (talk) 10:36, 15 February 2018 (EST)
- Whoops. And to answer that question, I don't believe Super Mario World was ever officially released in China (could be wrong on this, but it definitely wasn't released over there initially), due to a ban on video game consoles that was repealed a few years back. Mario 3D Land was brought over on the iQue 3DS thing released there. If there was a release of SMW, then it's likely no one has found the Chinese name and added it yet. BubbleRevolution (talk) 11:29, 15 February 2018 (EST)
- With regards to German, we have two names in the Encyclopedia Super Mario Bros.: Mega Moles are known as Mega-Monty, while Morty Moles are known as Morty Maulwurf, I don't know where that name in the main page comes from.--Mister Wu (talk) 21:47, 15 February 2018 (EST)

@Toadette a few things have. Magmarrgh was found to have Unbaba as a file name (according to an edit summary from LtL), but they're not getting merged. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 22:54, 14 February 2018 (EST)
@Toadette again. Using the TV series as an argument is automatically flawed for a number of reasons, and Blarggs in SMW and Magmarrghs act exactly the same: Hiding under the lava with only their eyes visible, then bursting out upon being approached. And again, there should be more proof for them being the same than different before lumping two completely different things together. (also this was split a long time ago by an admin before being recently being merged without proposal by a repeat offender of "making massive changes without gaining approval first," so...yeah.) Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 23:09, 14 February 2018 (EST)
- Only in the 3D games. Magmaws fill that role in the 2D games. (T|C) 23:12, 14 February 2018 (EST)
- And in the only non-3D game it was in, it was a boss flunky, which in the 2D games, often act a bit different from normal. Like Big Pokey and the Spiny Eggs in the Lakithunder battle. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 23:15, 14 February 2018 (EST)
- Also, the fact that they acted the same once outweighs that. The fact that the other two never appeared in the same genre also causes it to become a tad broken. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 23:24, 14 February 2018 (EST)
@Toadette; saying the Mario Galaxy Bat isn't a good example because they look and behave differently is kind of confusing here, as Morty Mole and Mega Mole DO look and behave differently. And just because there isn't anything explicitly confirming the two is exactly why they should be split into separate articles, if we're trying to be encyclopedia here, then merging based on assumptions is not the way to operate. Magmaargh and Blargg also look and behave nearly the same (the TV series isn't a good metric to judge things by), and so do Boss Bass and Cheep Chomp, and they both have the same file names, yet they stay separate. Additionally, 2D and 3D Goombas have the exact same name and are confirmed to be the same, Mega Mole and Morty Mole have separate names in both English and Japanese, and are being merged based on an assumption from a filename. I really don't see why splitting these two is facing so much opposition when so many others remain separate (like the article for Piranha Plant from TTYD being separate from the main Piranha Plant article). BubbleRevolution (talk) 08:45, 15 February 2018 (EST)
- What I mean is that Bats and Swoops actually look different. Morty Moles and Mega Moles look so similar to each other that it's more likely to be a difference from 2D and 3D platforming. Read LinkTheLefty's previous oppose votes if you're not convinced. (T|C) 09:23, 15 February 2018 (EST)
- I've read those, and I don't agree with them, I don't feel that file names should take precedence over official material. Per the previous examples I've given, enemies like Magmaargh and Blargg have had the same names in files, yet are not merged, while the two look and act very similar (in addition to Blargg not having appeared in a 3D title), and the same argument could be applied to them being merged, but they remain separate. Different sub-species of enemies have appeared over the years that have been similar and there doesn't seem to be anything linking the two other than assumptions, hence my disagreement on this topic. BubbleRevolution (talk) 09:32, 15 February 2018 (EST)
I would like to talk about the points that I think indicated that the link between Swoops and Bats was there in the games' files but they were kept distinct nonethless:
- first of all, the official name in the guides and 30th anniversary books was different: BasaBasa/Swoop versus Batton/Bat, never used interchangeably - after the return of enemies officially known as BasaBasa, we didn't see enemies with the appearance of BasaBasa being referreed to in books as Batton and vice versa;
- indeed, Swoops always retained their original appearance after the introduction of Bats, with just a recoloring and minor changes, they didn't gain the pig face or the eyes with circular irises;
- we also had an official book listing them as separate , although it's very difficult for editors of these books to properly acknowledge renaming - if the Encyclopedia Super Mario Bros. and what happened with the Japanese character books of the '90s is an indication, Nintendo still mostly works on a per game basis rather than a per character basis.
From what I've seen, what we are missing here so far is information to confirm the points - the Super Mario Pia is missing both Mega Moles and Morty Moles and in Super Mario Maker the enlarged moles aren't referred to as Indy or Goropoo in the game's files, indeed there's just one sprite set for both normal and enlarged Monty Moles, the one of Choropoo.--Mister Wu (talk) 21:47, 15 February 2018 (EST)
- I see your point here, my primary argument is though we don't have much information on whether or not they're a renaming, it's better or err on the side of caution and keep them separate until they're explicitly confirmed to be the same. BubbleRevolution (talk) 03:12, 16 February 2018 (EST)
- And those act the same as Monty Moles, and seem to be more along the lines of the "Mega Monty Moles" of Star Rush. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 21:49, 15 February 2018 (EST)
- And MP10. So, if we want to split SMW and SM3DL. Why not SMM? Mega Monty Mole. That is very close to Big Monty Mole. The question is: Is the relationship between them like Purple Coins or Pink Coins? Yoshi the SSM (talk) 22:27, 15 February 2018 (EST)
- Mega Monty Mole seems to be the true "Big Monty Mole," with Indy and Goropu being related, but not the same thing. A Japanese name for Mega Monty Mole would be nice.... Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 23:18, 15 February 2018 (EST)
- I'd definitely agree, then, the Mario Maker versions of Big Monty Moles are likely not the same thing as either of the large moles, like how the Big Bullet Bills in that game are clearly different from Banzai Bill. BubbleRevolution (talk) 03:08, 16 February 2018 (EST)
- Big Bullet Bills in Super Mario Maker? Never seen them. Or are you talking about another game? Anyways. The only Japanese name I saw on the wiki is Kyodai Choropū. It can be found it that mole's minigame article. Yoshi the SSM (talk) 13:56, 21 February 2018 (EST)
- My bad, I had misremembered Bullet Bills as being an enemy you could enlarge with a mushroom in that game. It's been like a year or more since I played it. Still stand by my point, though. BubbleRevolution (talk) 21:55, 21 February 2018 (EST)

- Hold up there, that book also identifies Bubba with Cheep Chomp while conspicuously leaving out SMB3 from its list, thus identifying it away from Boss Bass....Suppose that's a discussion for another time though. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 13:17, 16 February 2018 (EST)
@Doc on Blarrg - As far as I know, Magmaargh is only internally called "Unbaba" in Super Mario Galaxy 2. It subsequently changed to "WooGan" in Super Mario 3D Land. On that note, Magmaw was called "UnbabaSlim" in the former, so it seems the developers really intended for Magmaargh to be an updated Blargg before guide authors presumably decided to consider it a separate enemy. I think the wiki's current stance of Magmaargh as a derived species of Blargg, just like the Super Mario Galaxy Bat being a derived species of Swoop, serves as a good compromise of these ideas. Which once again brings me to Mega Mole's Morty Mole...
There has been a back-and-forth twice now about this topic, and anyone with the time and interest can read up the pros and cons and judge for themselves, but I'll just make this one question brief: Does the split side have a solution for how the wiki will cover the Super Mario Maker version of the big Monty Mole? Considering Super Mario Maker turned out to be a primary reason why Para-Beetle/Parabuzzy were finally merged back, I feel this should not be neglected. LinkTheLefty (talk) 12:50, 21 February 2018 (EST)
- Um, Doc is banned, so this is for others, but it would be for him when he gets back. As for SMM, it was not originally part of the proposal. But, if a split of Mega Mole happens, it should have all three split with SMM being the main one with what Mega Monty Moles actually do in their minigames with SMM. As, the differences of the SMM version from either is roughly the same as the differences between SMW and SM3DL versions. Yoshi the SSM (talk) 13:56, 21 February 2018 (EST)
- But we can't split off the Super Mario Maker big Monty Mole into its own article without conflicting with another proposal. That's precisely the problem - if Mega Mole and Morty Mole split, there will still be no obvious place to put this enemy. It will be in the same exact wishy-washy position of perpetual limbo that the Super Mario Maker winged Buzzy Beetle was in before the Para-Beetle and Parabuzzy merge. That's why this aspect needed to be decided in advance. LinkTheLefty (talk) 14:20, 21 February 2018 (EST)
- That proposal does have a basis. I mean, enemies only appearing in SMM don't exactly work due to you can create lots of things in SMM and it would be hard to make a fine line for those without another appearance. Stacks especially since you can stack anything stackable on top of each other.
- As for placement besides being separate from both, I think that it would most likely be with Mega Mole due to it being the most similar to it. But, I am not the proposer of this proposal. Even then, it has passed the time period it can be edited. Yoshi the SSM (talk) 15:04, 21 February 2018 (EST)
- I would like to point out that the Super Mario Maker big Monty Mole is neither a Super Mario World Mega Mole nor a Super Mario 3D Land Morty Mole, for all intents and purposes (and both the missing specific files for it and the sprite sheets confirmed it) it is a Monty Mole. It shouldn't be in this page to begin with. It probably would have been better if it was mentioned by the proposer in order to change this page all at once, but this Super Mario Maker enemy is beyond the scope of this proposal, whose purpose is Split Morty Mole from Mega Mole (again).--Mister Wu (talk) 17:51, 21 February 2018 (EST)
- Yeah, those moles shouldn't be part of either article. They're not the same thing, like how Boss Bass and Big Cheep-Cheep aren't the same. BubbleRevolution (talk) 21:48, 21 February 2018 (EST)
- I understand if this is the first time this ever came up, but this is the third identical proposal in a row, and nothing about this subject has changed at all. This discussion was thoroughly exhausted both previous times, and regardless, the result of ignoring the Super Mario Maker equivalent will appear as a coverage gap to the average reader. LinkTheLefty (talk) 12:48, 23 February 2018 (EST)
- Remember that the enlarged Super Mario Maker Monty Moles are unrelated. They don't have anything to do with Morty Moles nor Mega Moles both in name, appearance, behavior, even developers' data and are outside of the scope of the proposal which is about Morty Moles and Mega Moles. In no way can this proposal be invalidated by them. Since the Monty Mole's page already reports the correct information, if you think their presence in this page is confusing, I can remove them right now.--Mister Wu (talk) 16:46, 23 February 2018 (EST)
- Using the same logic, we can also remove unnamed corresponding enemy derivatives from all Super Mario Maker-related articles, including: Beach Koopa, Blooper Nanny, Giant Bob-omb, Stretch, Big Boo, Bull's-Eye Bill Blaster. Big Buzzy Beetle, Buzzy Beetle Tower, Chomp, Big Chain Chomp, Blurp, Big Cheep Cheep, Deep Cheep, Big Deep Cheep, Big Dry Bones, Parabones, Paragoomba, Flying Goomba, Big Goomba, Big Paragoomba, Big Galoomba, Goomba Tower, Jelectro, Big Koopa Troopa, Colossal Koopa Paratroopa, Zigzag Lava Bubble, Big Lava Bubble, Big Piranha Plant, Big Venus Fire Trap, Sea Urchin, Para-Beetle/Parabuzzy, Spiky Parabuzzy, Big Spiny, Big Thwomp, Big Thwomp, and Big Wiggler. This probably is not a good idea, however. LinkTheLefty (talk) 17:10, 23 February 2018 (EST)
- Every case must be assessed separately, we're now assessing this case which is clearly a mistake, to the point that neither the main Super Mario Maker page nor the Super Mario Maker section of the Monty Mole's page contain a link to Mega Mole in the body - it's only this page and the Super Mario Maker template that make that wrong assumption.--Mister Wu (talk) 17:47, 23 February 2018 (EST)
- Here's the bottom line: this proposal is dealing with an enlarged Monty Mole with a conflicting name, character design, and platform behavior. If the article stays merged, then for all intents and purposes, Super Mario Maker has a quick and easy equivalent just like any of the other enemies I've mentioned; if the article splits, then it doesn't. LinkTheLefty (talk) 18:11, 23 February 2018 (EST)
- Thanks for the explanation, I can understand this point, I think it is further aided by its English name, which is indeed generic enough that it fits various not necessarily related enemies that are all enlarged moles. Still, I think we'll be able to deal with this particular case even in the case of a split happening - the Monty Mole page already mentions this aspect after all, and other cases of enlarged Monty Moles were mentioned in the discussion, so we might have a look at them to see if a new page can be created.--Mister Wu (talk) 19:31, 23 February 2018 (EST)

- Yeah, those moles shouldn't be part of either article. They're not the same thing, like how Boss Bass and Big Cheep-Cheep aren't the same. BubbleRevolution (talk) 21:48, 21 February 2018 (EST)
LinkTheLefty (talk) 14:20, 21 February 2018 (EST)
i'm More on Board The Split Because Mega Mole and Morty Mole Look, act and are named Different. LUIGIRULES71 (talk) 12:10, 23 February 2018 (EST)
@Waluigi Time What about Boom Boom? He Was Gone For What Seemed Like Forever But Kept his name and is still a 3-Hit Pushover. The Behavior is Different To Suit The now 3D Game. also What about Stretch? Sure their not in a 3D Game But They Were Gone Longer Than even Boom Boom But Their Behavior and name are still the same. The Morty Moles Look, Behave and are named Differently. also Those Sections They appear in Look To narrow and therefore 2D. LUIGIRULES71 (talk) 12:37, 23 February 2018 (EST)
- You're making the mistake of interpreting my comment as "every enemy that disappears changes", all I said was "enemies that disappear sometimes change". Also, Boom Boom did get changes, his colors were updated and he lost his spiked shell in the 3D games. -- Too Bad! Waluigi Time! 12:57, 23 February 2018 (EST)
- i Did? Sorry about that. But, still Mega Mole: is Unstompable even by a Spin Jump Or Yoshi, Light Brown, has a Different name, Moves considerably Fast, Doesn't Stop Moving, While Morty Mole: is Stompable even with a normal Jump, Reddish-Brown, also has a Different name, Moves Slower and stops To Look around. i'd say Their Different. LUIGIRULES71 (talk) 18:03, 25 February 2018 (EST)
One more note on the Parabuzzy/Para-Beetle situation: those have the same Japanese name. Morty Moles and Monty Moles do not. It's not a good example there, as they are clearly intended to be the same enemy in at least one region, while the only thing linking Morty Mole and Mega Mole aside from speculative reasoning is a filename. Like what's been said previous, Magmaargh and Blargg are very similar, and had an identical filename in Mario Galaxy 2, but remain separate. Don't see why this shouldn't be the same. BubbleRevolution (talk) 23:21, 23 February 2018 (EST)
- To be fair, Blaargs have been clearly established as dinosaurs that live in lava, while Magmaarghs are literal lava monsters. It's a bigger difference than "big Monty Mole". -- Too Bad! Waluigi Time! 13:13, 24 February 2018 (EST)
- Blarggs already appear to be made out of lava to me, and there's really no concrete answer on whether or not they're supposed to be, as they never appeared in a 3D game. Plus, we have pages for multiple "big" version of enemies, like Mega Blooper and Big Blooper. Again, there's no concrete information that they're the same, so until there's a confirmation of such, they should stay separate. BubbleRevolution (talk) 21:15, 24 February 2018 (EST)
- Big Blooper and Mega Blooper have only been individual bosses (the latter is even said to be "enlarged by Kamek's magic" à la Yoshi's Island), unlike Big Goomba and Mega Goomba. LinkTheLefty (talk) 08:00, 26 February 2018 (EST)
- That may be true, but I still stand by my point that there's no explicit confirmation, and it's not enough for them to stay merged. BubbleRevolution (talk) 09:59, 26 February 2018 (EST)

- Proposals are able to be extended if they end in a tie, so that's what I'm going to do, as it looks like it will end that way. Doesn't necessarily mean enough people will vote on it, though. BubbleRevolution (talk) 08:33, 27 February 2018 (EST)
@Mario Kart DS Fan Why'd You Vote Oppose? LUIGIRULES71 (talk) 20:43, 27 February 2018 (EST)
i Don't Get Why Some Oppose, The only Reason Why it's Merged is Because of Morty Mole's File name. i Think it's a Bad idea To Use the File name For a Reference if it's named in The Prima as i see Using File names for the article More as a Last Resort, Like if We Can't Find any Offical name in the Prima, (Or any other Book,) The Websites, Or in-game, Then We Use The File name Like We Did With This Lovely Bug. Just a question: Does Encyclopedia Super Mario Bros. list the two under separate names? If that's the case, then I'd say that's the biggest piece of evidence to split them. Again, there is absolutely NO evidence they're intended to be the same enemy, even if they are similar. Para-Buzzy is not a good example in this case, and they have an identical Japanese name. We shouldn't assume things. BubbleRevolution (talk) 21:24, 28 February 2018 (EST)
- The Encyclopedia Super Mario Bros. works on a "per-game" basis, listing all the enemies of a game with the names they had in said game - the Himan Bros. (「ヒマンプロス」)in Super Mario Bros. 3 become Mega Bros. (「メザプロス」) in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, to cite an officially acknowledged renaming -; needless to say at this point that Mega Moles are known as Indī (「インデイー」) and Morty Moles are known as Goropū (「ゴロプー」).--Mister Wu (talk) 06:17, 1 March 2018 (EST)
- How does the German/Spanish translation generally handle name changes? The Japanese goes with legacy names depending on section (with exceptions like Keronpa Ball), which is why it has four different names for Big Boo, and I don't see anyone calling for that one to be split strictly based on Japanese naming anytime soon. It could be an indication on what the English translation will look like later this year. LinkTheLefty (talk) 07:16, 1 March 2018 (EST)
- The names are (English : German, Spanish):
- Mega Mole: Mega Monty, Megatopo
- Morty Mole : Morty Maulwurf, Megatopo
- No consistency, which is unsurprising, as the Spanish translation actually did a complete translation from Japanese, using then a glossary which was inconsistent and ultimately wasn't always followed.--Mister Wu (talk) 07:29, 1 March 2018 (EST)
- So in summary, the Japanese and German names are different, the Spanish and internal names are the same, and the English and German names come from Prima Games, which gives it about a 50/50 chance of accuracy. The Spanish version may be a judgment call, but at this point, I think this topic should take a rain check at least until the English version of Encyclopedia Super Mario Bros. comes out. LinkTheLefty (talk) 08:24, 1 March 2018 (EST)
@Toadette the Achiever (talk), @YoshiFlutterJump (talk) Remember that the Parabuzzy and Para-Beetle case is different, as the official Japanese name of those is the same, while in this case the official Japanese name of Mega Moles and Morty Moles is completely different. This is not something stemming from PRIMA Games or Nintendo of America.--Mister Wu (talk) 07:04, 1 March 2018 (EST)
- What other proof do you have? Just because their Japanese names are different does not mean they're different. Also, have you even addressed Super Mario Maker yet? (T|C) 08:10, 1 March 2018 (EST)
- If their appearance, Japanese AND English names, and behaviors are different, then the burden of proof is on the one claiming they're the same. They COULD be the same, but there's no concrete evidence, and as such, they should be split. Also, Super Mario Maker moles aren't the same as either species and should probably either have their own article or just get merged with Monty Mole. BubbleRevolution (talk) 09:20, 1 March 2018 (EST)
- I addressed all points - especially the Super Mario Maker naming - in the discussion above. Here are the scans of the Nintendo Official Guidebook of Super Mario 3D Land, if you want the scans of the Encyclopedia Super Mario Bros., I can upload those as well. I was talking about the cases being different. Since Nintendo is a Japanese company, the official Japanese name is way more important than other non-English names and in the case of Parabuzzy and Para-Beetle it was the same, while here it is different.--Mister Wu (talk) 11:42, 1 March 2018 (EST)
Incidentally, I also discovered that Morty Moles are officially stated to be huge Monty Moles (「巨大なチョロプー」), while the bios of Mega Moles consistently stated that they were bosses of the moles, in particular Monty Moles (you can see this in the Perfect Ban Mario Character Daijiten a.k.a. Perfect Edition of the Great Mario Character Encyclopedia, in the Super Mario Bros. Daizukan and in the Super Mario Zen Hyakka a.k.a. Super Mario Complete Encyclopedia). Of course, after so many years, discrepancies can be expected even in the bios.--Mister Wu (talk) 11:42, 1 March 2018 (EST)
- Definitely interesting to note, it shows that there are differences between the two at least. BubbleRevolution (talk) 03:01, 2 March 2018 (EST)
Another thing worth noting: In the 3D Land internal files, several other enemies are referred to with different names than their final ones. Most notably (and a similar scenario to this), Spike Eels are referred to as "Utsubo", the Japanese name of Maw-Rays, yet they remain separate, as they're clearly different enemies. Just pointing out that filenames aren't everything, and not enough to base lumping stuff together off of. BubbleRevolution (talk) 17:16, 2 March 2018 (EST)
- Although in that case, Maw-Rays already had an established design in modern games thanks to Super Mario 64 DS, New Super Mario Bros., and Mario Kart Wii. Mario Kart Wii came out only 3 years prior and Maw-Rays continued to use that design in Mario Kart games afterwards until their redesign and rename in Odyssey. -- Too Bad! Waluigi Time! 16:41, 3 March 2018 (EST)
- So did Swoops, but that didn't stop us from lumping Bat (Super Mario Galaxy) in with them for years until a recent proposal passed. My point is that filenames aren't enough to determine whether or not enemies are the same thing, especially when we have multiple official sources that give them completely different names. BubbleRevolution (talk) 22:11, 3 March 2018 (EST)
- Exactly. LUIGIRULES71 (talk) 00:07, 4 March 2018 (EST)
- What's your point? We did end up splitting them, so I don't think you can use that as a precedent at all. -- Too Bad! Waluigi Time! 14:03, 4 March 2018 (EST)
- My point is that I believe the same standard should apply here. BubbleRevolution (talk) 03:37, 5 March 2018 (EST)

BubbleRevolution (talk) 22:11, 3 March 2018 (EST)
- To be fair, Utsubo could be taken as a generic eel name and may be no different than, say, Jammyfish being Jellyfish in Super Mario Galaxy, whereas Indy is unmistakable. From what I've been able to tell, Unagi/Maw-Ray's filename tends to be moray in other games, which is admittedly still generic, but at least it would be internally consistent and so a clearer indication of that specific enemy if it was reused in Super Mario 3D Land. LinkTheLefty (talk) 06:20, 4 March 2018 (EST)
All right, while I was blocked, I decided to organize all points I could think of on this issue, all at once, in a detailed and organized thesis, so as to not leave any holes. I have showed it at various points on the forums with various other users, and it seems that this is the apex of how it will turn out. Here it is...
Mega Mole vs. Morty Mole: An organized overview:
- Article 1: The two look completely different:
- A: Mega Mole is a large variation of the Monty Mole, which unlike the Monty Mole, wears sunglasses. A common rebuke of this is using this artwork to say that Monty Mole has sunglasses in Super Mario World; despite their sprite clearly lacking them. However, with Mister Wu's guide uploads, I can now confirm that Super Mario World art for Monty Moles did not always have sunglasses, and in fact, looked like the in-game sprite. This artwork was clearly in usage by Nintendo and not just the guide, as it paved the way for later appearances in various games until they were given their modern appearance. Let's compare and contrast the artwork of Monty Mole and Mega Mole as seen there. Mega Mole has, as I've mentioned on numerous occasions, sunglasses and a smug, jutted-out lower lip. Monty Mole, on the other hand, has no sunglasses, and while the face is smug, there isn't a potruding lip to be seen.
- a: There is one detail suggesting Mega Moles were intended to be simply upscaled Monty Moles, and that is the Monty Moles' appearance in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, released twelve years later, which features sunglasses and smug lips. However, this detail is rendered basically worthless by the fact that in the same game, Hammer Bros took after their respective larger not-quite counterpart, while both appear on-model in the remake.
- b: Ordinary Monty Moles are depicted with sunglasses in Mario Kart 64, Mario Party 3, and Paper Mario, based upon the inaccurate "jumping" artwork from Super Mario World; however, this does not change the fact that the Monty Moles has artwork for Super Mario World depicting it without glasses, akin to the game's sprite. Furthermore the art does not appear to be original to that specific guide, as it appears to have been drawn in conjunction with the Mega Mole artork, due to the similar pose and details. Paper Mario also had other unusual designs, such as giving Pokey a strange catlike appearance possibly based tenuously off of its Super Mario World sprites, as opposed to its unnecessarily demonic Super Mario 64 design, giving Hammer Bro a blue helmet and mostly-wooden hammer, giving Dry Bones hair, making Swoop(er) purple, making Bill Blaster a generic cannon, making Lava Bubble an upright flame, giving Spike Top pale tan skin and an orange shell rim and claws, as well as whatever was going on with Boo's face.
- c: Aside from the Superstar Saga sprite, all of the sunglass-wearing Monty Moles metioned above lack a jutted-out lower lip, smug expression, or pointy nose, instead having a short, gopher-like nose with a split upper lip with whiskers, like what Monty Moles have had in most games since Super Mario 64 DS, while most prior games (and a few closely-following games) gave them a pushed-out, pointed nose. The large-nosed design also gave them prominent cheeks, while the designs with the gopher-like nose (including most of the sunglass-wearing ones) have flat or even somewhat concave cheeks with no prominence. While the existence of a lower lip comes and goes, they are never as prominent as that of a Mega Mole, again barring the off-model 'Superstar Saga sprite.
- B: Morty Mole is a large variation of the Monty Mole, with a mahogany body, a tan belly, and a much higher-up face. There is not any eyewear to be seen, which as I pointed out previously, was actually already an abberation among the Moles for the Mega Mole to wear them. Other than that, nothing more appearance-wise to write home about them.
- C: Between Mega Mole and Morty Mole, the only similarities is being large Monty Moles relatives that have three little hairs on the back of their heads. The differences far outweigh them. As for the other games, remember what Mario Kart 64 did to Piranha Plant? It's even weirder-looking when it moves. Mario Party 3 I'll admit to being less-familiar with, but it still gave the red Spiny Shell distinct hexagonal plates, of which they have been established from the beginning to not have, unlike Troopas.
- D: Neither in appearance is just an upscaled Monty Mole; they both feature key differences. The upscaled Monty Mole is the Mega Monty Mole from Mario Party 10, Mario Party: Star Rush, and Super Mario Maker, which looks exactly the same as a normal Monty Mole except for size.
Monty Mole, on the other hand, has no sunglasses, and while the face is smug, there isn't a potruding lip to be seen.
- Article 2: The two act completely different:
- A: Mega Mole storms back and forth, sometimes across hazardous ground, and is an absolute no-sell for jumping, much like Goonie or the Para-Beetles in the Super Mario games. Unlike Monty Moles in that game, however, they do not chase.
- B: Morty Mole cautiously treads back and forth in narrow tunnels; if it comes across an obstacle, it stops, then turns around. It can be defeated with two jumps, between which it will gain speed, much like a Rex. Like the Monty Moles in that game, they follow preset paths back-and-forth.
- C: Behaviorally, the only similarities between the two is that they walk. Which can be said of at least 60% of other enemies.
- Article 3: The two are named differently in English and Japanese:
- A: Mega Mole is Indy. No one seems to be sure what that means.
- B: Morty Mole is officially named Goropoo. It is a combination of Choropoo (Monty Mole) and Goro (a rumbling sound).
- a: The file name for Morty Mole is, in fact, Indy. This is the only logical reason to keep them separate, but it is far outweighed by all the evidence to the contrary. Furthermore, there is precendence to have articles for clearly different things be split even if a file name references something. Batton's file name was Basabasa, but it is clearly not a Swoop. Ugan's file name in Super Mario Galaxy 2 was Unbaba, a similar lava-residing dinosaur that lunged, mouth agape, at the player. In later games, where its behavior is replaced with "rise up and move forwards," however, this file name is replaced. Another example is Spike Eel, the file mane of which is Maw-Ray's Japanese name, despite them being extremely different in many qualities, noting at the same time how Unagi/Maw-Ray has gone through redesigns recently, resembling the bird from The Giant Claw in Mario Kart 8 and a real-life Moray in Super Mario Odyssey. Regardless, there is much precedence, and while Mega Mole may not have appeared recently, there is still very little grounds to merge based off of one point that is so often ignored, and rightfully so. File names typically represent a very early stage in development, as that is when the object it represents is first being coded in, and changing the name of it would require changing every time its name comes up. This seems to be why Batton remains Basabasa in Super Mario Galaxy 2<'>s files, while Magmaargh gets a new file name for Super Mario 3D Land, as it has a completely different behavior in that game, and as such, needed re-coded anyways.
- C:The only language that gives them the same name is Spanish, which was apparently due to an inconsistent glossary that made it so it was nigh impossible to follow correctly, plus an over-abundance of middle men.
- Article 4: The stated role is different: According to Mister Wu, each of those Japanese guides he posted referred to Mega Moles as "bosses" among the Moles, while Morty Moles were larger Monty Mole variants with no stated leadership role whatsoever.
- Article 5: Tenuity:
- A: Using the argument that they are "big Monty Moles" and therefore the same thing is exactly the same as saying Colossal Koopa Paratroopa and Tub-O-Troopa are the same for being large Koopa Paratroopas, or that Banzai Bill and the Big Bullet Bill of Mario & Sonic are the same for being large Bullet Bills, or that Boss Bass, Red Blurp, and Big Cheep Cheep are the same for being large Cheep Cheeps, or that Giant Bob-omb and King Bomb are the same for being large Bob-ombs...my, quite the list of non-identical "large" variants we have here, huh?
- B: One argument that was brought up would be that the potential loss of the Super Mario Maker section would cause a glaring lack of coverage. If that's the case, please direct me to the articles for "Big Spike Top," "Big Fishbone," "Big Blurp," "Big Magikoopa," (and no, Giant Kamek doesn't count as it's solely a boss, and we don't lump Naval Piranha with Big Piranha Plant,) "Big Jumping Piranha Plant," "Big Circling Boo Buddies," "Big Baby Blooper," again, the list goes on.
- C: It was once brought up that Morty Mole's color difference shouldn't matter due to Fire Piranha Plant being colored differently in 3D Land as well. This does not actually translate: In most games, Fire Piranha Plant is distingishable from a distance from pose alone, as it's the one whose head tracks the player. In 3D Land, both types had the same "at rest" pose and both tracked the player, so the color-difference was necessary for split-second differentiating. In Super Mario Odyssey, while Fire Piranha Plants are red, they glow orange every two seconds, and there's no "normal" Piranha Plant enemies in that game anyways. My point is that Monty Mole and Morty Mole can be told apart at a glance even without the color difference, and the game's other large guy, Big Tail Goomba, wasn't discolored from the regular Tail Goomba.
- D: Bizarrely, Para-Beetle and Parabuzzy keep getting brought up, despite the fact that they've had the same Japanese name from the start, are from different genres, and the alledged fact that Para-Beetle was called Parabuzzy by the New Super Mario Bros. Wii guide, blurring them further. Then Super Mario Maker made them definitely the same, by using either designs with the typical Super Mario behavior. As for the moles? Super Mario Maker has made them definitely different, as the large mole in that game is neither Mega Mole nor Morty Mole in appearance or behavior, which also makes neither of them the "Kyodai Choropoo." Besides, there are plenty of differences between enemy behaviors between platform and RPG games, as is the case with the flying Buzzies, as I listed way back when I made what I think was my first successful proposal.
- Article 6: Wrapping things up:
- A: As demonstrated, there is far more proof of them being different than them being the same. As such, claiming they're the same is the less-likely claim, from a judicial standpoint alone.
- B: To avoid speculation, the wiki should only make judgement-call merges when there is not significant amounts of proof that they are different; for instance, for a long time, it was sensible to assume Spoing was a Scuttlebug, but once it became clear they weren't they were split....once that proposal was fully-enacted, anyways. It was even not terribly rash to refer to Undergrunt as Monty Mole before we knew they weren't, since game had a few odd designs, and a similar-looking species in the same game was easily-confusable with Rocky Wrench. But once they're definitely differentiated, they need to be split.
- C: It is far more cautious to have them separate until something specifically states they are the same, what with all the proof they are different.
- D: Due to the amount of proof they are different, the burden of proof really lies on the people saying they are the same. Proof was found that Bubba was intnded to be Boss Bass and Bub was intended to be Cheep Cheep before they were merged, and I'd prefer there be proof of that caliber if these are to stay merged. Perring the last proposal is within the rules, but I believe I have now addressed every single point against splitting them from both previous proposals.
- E: For those of you waiting for Encyclopedia Super Mario Bros. to be the "ultimate answer," that's being handled by Dark Horse Comics, who in their various Zelda books:
- a: Can't decide whether the Oracle games came before or after Link's Awakening;
- b: Referred to the Demon Train as the "Dream Train;"
- c: Perpetuated the myth that the Link to the Past enemy Coppie is the same as Goriya;
- d: Made the cringeworthy choice of referring to the first two Zelda 2 bosses (Horsehead and Helmethead) by bad romanizations of their Japanese names (Mazura and Jermafenser, respectively).
- e: Identified one mohawk croc (Zazack) with another (Daira).
- f: Failed to give English names period to a number of Zelda 2 and Link to the Past enemies (just using the Japanese ones with some getting slight romanizations), which Link-the-Lefty has listed.
- g: My point is, they aren't a great ultimate arbiter.
Anyways, I await proof that these are the same. Burden of proof lies with that claim, as I have given plenty of proof for this side already, I believe. And if you see any problems with any of my above reasoning, feel free to tell me. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 21:18, 6 March 2018 (EST)
- Well said, I agree with most of what you've written here. One note about the Zelda thing, I don't see how localizing certain enemies with romanizations of their Japanese names is a bad thing or erroneous, they've never had officially translated English names. Zelda enemies have always had pretty fantasy-sounding/nonsensical names so I feel it fits. The Horsehead and Helmethead thing is kind of weird, especially since Breath of the Wild referenced both of those names (Orsedd and Helmhead Bridges), but given that "Mazura" and "Jermafenser" also appeared in a recent guidebook (from a different publisher) released slightly before the art book, it seems like those are what Nintendo officially wants those two to be called. BubbleRevolution (talk) 23:56, 6 March 2018 (EST)
- I might be misremembering, but I think some of them might have translated the accents wrong or not at all, keeping the horizontal bars and such, which wouldn't make much sense to a solely-English-speaking person. But again, I could be remembering wrong. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 01:16, 7 March 2018 (EST)
- Huh, interesting, they may have just been going for accuracy then if that's the case. I'll be interested to see how the Encyclopedia handles the SML2 enemies when it comes out. BubbleRevolution (talk) 04:44, 7 March 2018 (EST)

- @Article 5D: No. The big Monty Moles from Super Mario Maker are no less similar to Mega Moles, at the very least. (T|C) 21:28, 6 March 2018 (EST)
- And they're a different thing entirely as well. They're in the files simply as the same as a Monty Mole, but taking up more space, as that's how they act. If they're distinct from Monty Mole at all, they'd be the same as the "Mega Monty Mole" from the Mario Party games, as it's "Kyodai Choropoo," so just a "Giant Monty Mole," with no added frills thrown in. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 21:44, 6 March 2018 (EST)
- And I concur that you present that opinion as if enemy designs can't change over time, which they can.
- I don't think anyone is arguing that designs can't change over time, just that there's insufficient evidence to declare without question that the two aren't the same. BubbleRevolution (talk) 00:00, 7 March 2018 (EST)
- Even so, "Morty Mole" only appeared one time. If it weren't for the fact that Monty Moles appeared in that game (for a basis), it could easily be the one-time design of Big Monty Mole. But on the other hand, the same could apply to Bat (Super Mario Galaxies) but without a basis (and other enemies as well). Read further to my first next paragraph comment.
Also, @Article 6E: notice how you never address the actual Encyclopedia Super Mario Bros., instead basing it off of a similar book, which doesn't make it any more reliable. If anything, I suggest waiting off this proposal and waiting the eight months for the book to be localized into English. Then we'll see... (T|C) 23:05, 6 March 2018 (EST)
- Actually I address three books by the same publisher and some of their various inconsistencies with each other and established canon. I own two of them myself. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 23:08, 6 March 2018 (EST)
- They may be unreliable when it comes to Zelda, but until the Mario book is released, there is nothing to say against it. Also, Zelda has a canon. Mario does not (what canon it does have refers to everything). In any case, it is best to put this aside until it is released. Yoshi the SSM (talk) 00:42, 7 March 2018 (EST)
- I honestly highly doubt they'll be called anything but "Morty Mole" in the English localization. All the names in Prima's 3D Land guide have been correct so far whenever the enemies from that game reappeared, and the Japanese version gives them separate names, I don't see why they'd change it when practically every official Japanese source gives the two moles different names, it'd be like them suddenly calling Coin Coffers "Moneybags" or something. BubbleRevolution (talk) 00:58, 7 March 2018 (EST)
- Well, they did incorrectly label Sledge Bros as Sumo Bros for about six years. (T|C) 21:00, 7 March 2018 (EST)
- After Nintendo Power did it first. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 21:07, 7 March 2018 (EST)
- Prima definitely isn't always 100% accurate with their names, but I have no reason to doubt the 3D Land ones are inaccurate. This is a bit of a different case from Sledge Bros., which are clearly intended to be the same enemy as they have an almost identical design, with Morty Mole and Mega Mole it's not nearly that cut and dry. - If it doesn't reach consensus, I'll probably repropose this in a few months after Encyclopedia Super Mario Bros. gets published here, with an added option of dealing with the Mario Maker moles. BubbleRevolution (talk) 17:47, 14 March 2018 (EDT)
- Um... See User talk:Porplemontage#"The Morty-fying Situation". He details the best course of action. Yoshi the SSM (talk) 17:52, 14 March 2018 (EDT)
- That's what I was planning on adding as an option if it came to making another proposal later on. There's lots of other big enemies in Mario Maker that don't have articles, we could just add the details to the Monty Mole page. BubbleRevolution (talk) 17:58, 14 March 2018 (EDT)

- Yeah, I'd say the English version of Encyclopedia Super Mario Bros. is our best bet right now. (T|C) 23:27, 14 March 2018 (EDT)
- Note that that would still be lower on the hierarchy than Prima, as it is not for the release of a specific game, but as a retrospective, and not written by Nintendo themselves, but by Dark Horse Comics. It's just like any other potential source, not an ultimate answer. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 23:42, 14 March 2018 (EDT)

In regards to the Super Mario Maker info, I'd like to point out that the information for Buzzy Beetle+Wings+Super Mushroom isn't on the Heavy Para-Beetle page, nor should it be. As it's a different thing, and doesn't need to be lumped with something only tenuously similar. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 23:01, 14 March 2018 (EDT)
While I myself have taken a neutral stance this time, I will say for the record, since it looks like support is succeeding now, pushing the same exact proposal multiple times consecutively without any new working information whatsoever is still not a good idea and generally shouldn't happen as it can set a bad trend. I really don't see why this subject couldn't have just waited a few more months until we finally get the needed source (hopefully as scheduled) that should definitively tilt this "borderline case" in one direction or another. Big Monty Mole[edit]
Big Monty Moles, larger versions of regular Monty Moles, appear in the Super Mario Maker series and Yoshi's Crafted World. However, neither this article or the Morty Mole article mentions this. How should we handle this? Some people may think Big Monty Moles are the same as Mega Moles, but I think they are different. --DeepFriedCabbage 13:18, August 19, 2019 (EDT)
- Definitely. They should be split. But since they're called "big Monty Moles", and not "Big Monty Mole", we'd have to use the Mario Party name. -- FanOfYoshi 13:21, August 19, 2019 (EDT)
- Did Big Monty Moles appear in any games other than the Super Mario Maker series and Yoshi's Crafted World? You implied that they also appeared in a Mario Party game. --DeepFriedCabbage 13:38, August 19, 2019 (EDT)
- Scroll to the Monty Mole's stats part of the page, and it mentions both Monty Mole and Mega Monty Mole. -- FanOfYoshi 13:42, August 19, 2019 (EDT)
- Mega Monty Mole deserves its own page, but do the big Monty Moles from YCW have any difference from regular Monty Moles? Otherwise we should only split the Mario Party Mega Monty Mole, while mentioning how Mega Moles/Morty Moles are not the same as Mega Monty Moles, or the other larger Monty Moles. Doomhiker (talk) 13:52, August 19, 2019 (EDT)
- (Edit conflict with Doomhiker) I don't know if the boss Mega Monty Mole should be included in the Big Monty Mole article or be considered a separate character, like Mega Sledge Bro. Right now, Mega Monty Mole is a redirect to Mega Monty Mole's Maze Mischief, which just isn't right. --DeepFriedCabbage 13:55, August 19, 2019 (EDT)
- Big Monty Moles are certainly different from regular ones in YCW. They require two hits to defeat, turning red on the first hit. Big Monty Moles are always found in the background, so they can only be interacted with by throwing eggs. --DeepFriedCabbage 14:00, August 19, 2019 (EDT)
- Mega Goomba is merged to the Big Goomba page, we should either change that or stay consistent. As the big Monty Moles are different in YCW they are definitely worthy of coverage (we can use the {{Distinguish}} template or the {{about}} template of the Mega Mole page, not sure if it is needed on the Morty Mole page) and we might as well cover their appearance in SMM given that their generic appearance is different than regular Mony Moles in at least one game. Unjust Dessert Pages[edit]
I own Unjust Desserts and I was wondering which pages have Mega Moles on them? MontyMoleLoreMaster (talk) 01:48, October 4, 2021 (EDT)
Also should the Mega Mole in Volume 1 of Super Mario-kun get their own page as a notable member or just be lumped with the normal Mega Mole page? MontyMoleLoreMaster (talk) 22:22, October 5, 2021 (EDT)
So which pages had Mega Moles in Unjust Desserts? I never seen a part in which Magikoopa shrunk the Mega Moles or Luigi and Yoshi spitting them out. The only thing about Mega Moles I remember appearing was their name being on a crossword puzzle stating them as Bowser’s Minions. MontyMoleLoreMaster (talk) 15:10, October 31, 2021 (EDT)
- I imagine it's not a very commonly owned book, since you have it you're probably better off looking through it yourself. -- Too Bad! Waluigi Time! 15:43, October 31, 2021 (EDT)
Your right, but Unjust Desserts is a very confusing book to look through. Any suggestions to make finding the Mega Mole stuff easier in that book? MontyMoleLoreMaster (talk) 15:51, October 31, 2021 (EDT)
- Look through the book. You had nearly an entire month to do this. Mario-HOHO! (Talk / Stalk) 16:39, October 31, 2021 (EDT)
- I assume based on similar books I've read in the past that it's "confusing" because the paths are in different sections of the book and reading it from cover to cover doesn't make much sense. Does the plot really matter if you're just looking for where Mega Moles appear, though? There's really no reason to be asking other people to do this for you when you've already made it clear that you have the book and can find it yourself. -- Too Bad! Waluigi Time! 17:07, October 31, 2021 (EDT)
Super Mario-kun Mega Mole[edit]
Do you guys think the Mega Mole in volume 1 of Super Mario-kun should get their own page even if they don’t have a unique name? MontyMoleLoreMaster (talk) 21:43, November 6, 2021 (EDT)
- I am emphatically opposed to that. It's a generic member of the species that is treated as a vague individual due solely to being the only one in the story. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 23:48, November 6, 2021 (EDT)
Quote[edit]
- “オレは キラーけん銃を一 もっている! 丸ごしの刑事なんて こわくはないぜ! ("I have a Bullet Bill gun! I'm not afraid of a fatty detective!")”
- —Mega Mole, Super Mario (Kodansha manga)
Should we replace the current quote with this quote? MontyMoleLoreMaster (talk) 15:26, November 9, 2021 (EST)
- I don't think either quote is suitable. It's a portrayal from an obscure manga that doesn't really give a look at consistent portrayal through the series. Not every page needs a quote to go with it. -- Too Bad! Waluigi Time! 15:30, November 9, 2021 (EST)
- I agree that this article could probably do without either of these quotes. Nightwicked Bowser 16:56, November 9, 2021 (EST)
