Metal Mario (character)[edit]

Can you change all instances of [[Metal Mario (character)|Metal Mario]] to just [[Metal Mario]]? Thanks in advance. - RHG1951 (talk) 20:06, April 22, 2022 (EDT)

Identifiers[edit]

Hey I saw you were able to make it so infoboxes displayed the identifier-less title for pages with identifiers, without the need for the |title= parameter. How did you manage to do that exactly? (and does this mean we can get rid of |title= entirely?) Somethingone (talk) 06:38, April 25, 2022 (EDT)

I did this by deploying {{PAGETITLE}} as a drop-in replacement for {{PAGENAME}}. There's no need to get rid of the title parameter, as there are still some cases where it's needed, but those instances are now much rarer. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 09:07, April 25, 2022 (EDT)

Regarding the Mario Kart console abbreviation title thing[edit]

Okay, so I finally have a grasp on how I should argue for doing away with console abbreviations on titles of Mario Kart courses.

Take a look at this op-ed analysis by Ahemtoday (talk), where they argue, in summary, that the current titles for the variations of Mario Kart Tour courses returning in the Booster Course Pass are too confusing to use as article titles because a potential reader wouldn't guess that the article at, say, the Tokyo Blur title is actually one of four Mario Kart Tour variations, and that the article at the Tour Tokyo Blur title is for the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe variation.

I now realize that another good example comes to mind: the Donut Plains race courses from Super Mario Kart. Currently they're located at "SNES Donut Plains [number]", which is technically correct. However, there are also the articles located at "Donut Plains [number]" for the names of specific levels in Super Mario World. Since Super Mario World and Super Mario Kart are both SNES games, the "SNES" part could refer to either set of subjects, meaning they should receive proper disambiguation instead of forcing new readers to potentially do a double-take.

Thoughts worth considering perhaps. Toadette icon CTTT.pngFont of Archivist Toadette's signature(T|C) 00:08, May 14, 2022 (EDT)

The {{about}} template solves both of these problems. If the user ends up in the wrong place, then the about template is the tool we use to guide them, and whether they're clicking on "Tokyo Blur (Mario Kart 8 Deluxe)" or "Tour Tokyo Blur", "Donut Plains 1 (race course)" or "SNES Donut Plains 1", it isn't going to make a huge difference to them. But for our purposes, we certainly prefer to use the more-official name that appears in-game and in marketing materials than a wikified identifier name. It's really quite alright if the user has to read the about template or the first sentence of the article to figure out what's going on, that is valid and it's why we have the about template in the first place. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 01:58, May 14, 2022 (EDT)

Considering my own post is what (re)started this conversation in the first place, I feel a bit obligated to weigh in - although I only really have a firm stance on the MK8 Tour tracks and not Archivist Toadette's larger point. The reason I think this situation may warrant a deviation from convention is that this is the first time this prefix is being used to distinguish an article about a course's reappearance from its original appearance. While they are officially listed as Tour Tokyo Blur and Tour Paris Promenade, it's not in a context where it's used to set the course apart from its original. If anything, these course prefixes serve to highlight and describe the original. My point is: these two articles are using this naming scheme to disambiguate in a way it wasn't designed to, and in a way that it isn't used officially. I don't believe the result of this is ideal for the end user. Ahemtoday (talk) 03:50, May 14, 2022 (EDT)

Internal name template[edit]

Hey, is there a way to make the internal name template automatically apply <tt></tt> to the file parameter, like how it automatically italicizes the Japanese romanizations in the foreign name template? Somethingone (talk) 15:19, May 17, 2022 (EDT)

It's best not to, since if you need to include a reference, or some context such as parenthesis after the filename, that would get included in the <tt> as well. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 15:26, May 17, 2022 (EDT)

Question about image thumbnails[edit]

Do you know why thumbnails of JPG images look blurry, even when the image viewed at full size is not? Take my sandbox for example. The image on the bottom is just the image on the top converted to PNG, so it's not actually any different in quality than the JPG, yet the JPG (top) looks blurrier than the PNG (bottom) when thumbnailed. I don't know how it looks from your computer, but here's how it looks from mine (the difference is easier to notice when zoomed in, though it's there regardless) so you know what I'm talking about. Dark BonesSig.png 18:03, May 23, 2022 (EDT)

PNG tries to save every detail when generating thumbs, while JPG is heavily compressed and details are lost. That's also why there's a significant difference in the thumb file sizes. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 18:46, May 23, 2022 (EDT)

The second archive of Electrical Bowser jr. user talk[edit]

Hello Porplemontage. First off, I wanted to say thank you for merging my account into Electrical Bowser jr.. I would like to ask if you could restore my second page of user talk as Electrical Bowser jr., from later 2012 to 2013, as Archive 2.

Thanks, Electrical Bowser jr., 22:11, June 7, 2022 (EST)

Thank you again, since you did this. Electrical Bowser jr., 22:28, June 7, 2022 (EST)

My pleasure. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 22:40, June 7, 2022 (EDT)

Last request related to Electrical Bowser jr.[edit]

Hi Porplemontage, I greatly appreciate your work to merge my account back to Electrical Bowser jr.. The last thing was wondering was if you could merge my old 2012-2014 userpage history as Electrical Bowser jr. in to my account now, and if not, if you could create a separate page as an archive or something else for my userpage history almost a decade ago.

Have a good night and thanks for reading and your work, Electrical Bowser jr., 22:13, June 8, 2022 (EST)

Odd rewrite-expand templates[edit]

On pages such as the Kamek and Invincible Mario pages, the tag dates now appear as the reasons. Do you know why this is happening? Wario (Cowboy) from Mario Kart TourWildWario (talk) 03:34, June 11, 2022 (EDT)

He made some modifications to the tag’s template. Now you can add a reason in the first parameter (without the need of a “reason” variable) while the date parameter comes second. This caused the data in some tags to swap around. -- KOOPA CON CARNE 08:07, June 11, 2022 (EDT)

Hi. I noticed that we have 247 cases of ==Name in other languages==, which would normally be ==Names in other languages==. Would it be a good idea to replace them with a bot? --Dine2017 (talk) 10:42, July 26, 2022 (EDT)

Order of interwiki links[edit]

Hi. Is there any way to list the sidebar interwiki links in a consistent order, regardless of their position in the source? The current ordering is a bit inconsistent (compare SNES Battle Course 1 and SNES Battle Course 4). -Dine2017 (talk) 03:51, July 31, 2022 (EDT)

Text replacement[edit]

Hi. Would you mind changing Super Mario Bros.: Peach-hime Kyushutsu Dai Sakusen! to Super Mario Bros.: Peach-hime Kyūshutsu Dai Sakusen! in the mainspace and File namespace?

I believe there is no false positive in the File namespace and the only one in the mainspace is the interwiki link [[it:Super Mario Bros.: Peach-hime Kyushutsu Dai Sakusen!]] of the subject itself. --Dine2017 (talk) 10:36, August 13, 2022 (EDT)

[[List of games by date# followed by the same digits

These changes target things like this:

|latest_appearance=''[[Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions]]'' ([[List of games#2017|2017]])

Bot work again[edit]

Hi, would you mind running the bot to change every instance of {{button|ns| to {{button|switch|? Thanks! Toadette icon CTTT.pngFont of Archivist Toadette's signature(T|C) 08:23, September 1, 2022 (EDT)

I ran this when I updated the template. Where are you seeing the old syntax? EDIT: Found some that were missed and fixed them. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 08:44, September 1, 2022 (EDT)

{{hover}}[edit]

Hi. Regarding your recent use of the bot to propagate the {{hover}} template, there are still a few cases which can be covered.

By the way, SMW:JP#General rules is still instructing editors to use the old syntax -- does that need to be updated too? --Dine2017 (talk) 09:23, September 16, 2022 (EDT)

Finished the proposal railing against Mario Kart console abbreviation titles[edit]

You can view it here. Toadette icon CTTT.pngFont of Archivist Toadette's signature(T|C) 15:44, September 20, 2022 (EDT)

Where's the proposed solution? I can image you'd want to move Wii Maple Treeway to Maple Treeway, but what about something like SNES Rainbow Road? Rainbow Road (Super Mario Kart) doesn't work since it appears in multiple games in addition to Super Mario Kart; perhaps Rainbow Road (SNES)?
I suppose that could be two separate options. "Rainbow Road (Super Mario Kart)" might actually work in theory (contrary to your claim) since it originates from Super Mario Kart and would be differentiated from other courses in the same series; as an example, we already have Warp Space (Mario Party 4) differentiated from Warp Space (Mario Party 10) despite the former space also appearing in Mario Party: Island Tour. Toadette icon CTTT.pngFont of Archivist Toadette's signature(T|C) 15:58, September 20, 2022 (EDT)
Oh yeah I talked about that in my last comment here. I will move those away from game identifiers since the appear in multiple games. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 16:04, September 20, 2022 (EDT)
To briefly delve into that other topic though, what other possible identifier could be used for the two Warp Spaces? They have distinguishing functions so specific (to another player's space vs. to another Warp Space) that I don't think type identifiers would work in that case. Toadette icon CTTT.pngFont of Archivist Toadette's signature(T|C) 16:08, September 20, 2022 (EDT)

"Category:Kinder Chocolate images" & "Category:Artwork by Masanori Sato"[edit]

Can you please move these to "Category:Kinder images" and "Category:Masanori Sato images"? "Kinder Chocolate" is the name of a particular line of products under the Kinder brand, not the brand itself, and the current wiki coverage of Kinder doesn't concern it. The other category is named so because, I think, at the time I created it, I wasn't aware the titles of the other "Images by artist" categories had been recast; I apologise for that. -- KOOPA CON CARNE 09:37, September 30, 2022 (EDT)

Chuckster[edit]

Forgive me if this is off the beaten path, but is it true you once said "chuckster" should be split from Pianta? Just want to make sure the latter comment of this proposal stands. Mario jumping Nightwicked Bowser Bowser emblem from Mario Kart 8 06:15, October 9, 2022 (EDT)

Yes that's true, and that piece of porplemontage lore can be found here. In general I'm pro-split (I'd rather have many smaller articles with some breathing room than big articles where you have to hunt down the information), and especially so when a subject has a distinct name or term for it. Here's our average Google position for the query "chuckster" (1 is best). After being brutally owned by FANDOM for years (since their article came first), we've actually been creeping up the past few months and could be on the cusp of something great. A merge to Pianta would be a surrender in this fight since having an article with the matching title is what allows it to be close in the first place. I encourage everyone to be mindful of how discrete articles help search engine discoverability before voting to merge any article, not just chuckster. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 11:17, October 9, 2022 (EDT)
As of now I'm not firm on one option or the other in that proposal (inclined towards keeping chucksters split), but I really don't think search rankings make a particularly strong argument in the face of an encyclopedia's bid for veracity. I really don't mean to offend, but given your position as site proprietor I'm assuming ulterior motives with this proposition. -- KOOPA CON CARNE 11:45, October 9, 2022 (EDT)
I guess the reason I provide this info is for some broader context. The wiki doesn't exist in a vacuum. The real-world truth is that people find our articles through Google, and I thought our editors liked having their work found and read, liked outperforming FANDOM, etc. If these things aren't of significant importance or persuasive to you then so be it. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 12:31, October 9, 2022 (EDT)

MarioWiki:Article size[edit]

Hey can you remove the part on this policy that says "This policy does not apply to list or table pages such as Places and Trophy Descriptions (Super Smash Bros. Brawl), just actual articles."? my proposal to remove that text passed but I can't edit the page. S o m e t h i n g o n e ! Red Bandit.png 11:05, November 7, 2022 (EST)

Furigana[edit]

A while ago, you had <span class="explain"title="[H]">[K]</span> replaced with {{hover|[K]|[H]}} which I thought was more accessible. However, I wasn't aware that the wiki was capable of displaying furigana properly until I noticed it here, where it seems to look like <rb>K</rb><rt>H</rt>. Would you be able to script something conveniently similar to hover but explicitly meant for showing furigana? Also, on a semi-related note, do you have any thoughts on this? LinkTheLefty (talk) 10:06, November 30, 2022 (EST)

So now we have {{hover|[K]|[H]}} ([K]) and {{ruby|[K]|[H]}} ([K][H]). Should be easy enough to switch between them. I don't have a preference for which is used or any thoughts on the diff you've linked since I'm out of my depth when it comes to Japanese :) --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 10:49, November 30, 2022 (EST)

Fix the Rename template[edit]

Ruby[edit]

Minor issue but is there any way to code Template:Ruby so that when you highlight it the hirigana doesn't get highlighted along with the kanji, like how it happened with Template:Hover? S o m e t h i n g o n e ! Red Bandit.png 18:12, January 7, 2023 (EST)

Yeah I don't think that worked, I can still highlight the hirigana when the ruby template is used. S o m e t h i n g o n e ! Red Bandit.png 08:40, January 8, 2023 (EST)
I added the special Safari CSS for it, but it doesn't seem to actually work, so that one's on Apple --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 09:10, January 8, 2023 (EST)

Template:WWGIT fit pipes[edit]

I made this template to check whether a given value matches a character's name when called in Template:WWGIT fit (the "parent" template) and decide whether to create a piped link based on that. However, it appears that, whenever the parent template locates a true #ifeq expression from "WWGIT fit pipe", it splices the second entered string and the truth value to create the link instead of using just the truth value, e.g. for "Young Cricket", the link becomes "Young CricketYoung Cricket & Master Mantis" instead of Young Cricket & Master Mantis. Do you know what causes this? -- KOOPA CON CARNE 10:27, January 20, 2023 (EST)

Your thoughts on Visual Editor[edit]

Just for the record, is it possible to make a Visual Editor for this wiki, and do you think it is or isn't a good idea? Just asking because of the situation that was brought up in this currently active proposal regarding the topic. S o m e t h i n g o n e ! Red Bandit.png 13:12, February 25, 2023 (EST)

It's not currently technically feasible. I've done testing with it on the wiki, and trying to visual-edit large articles like Mario caused server CPU usage to spike and the visual editor eventually hit a 30-second timeout. Not good for server stability. However, I'm planning on migrating the site to an upgraded server early next year. I think there's a good chance it will be doable on the new hardware, but I have to test it first.
In terms of want/desire for it, I'm not really a huge fan, but if it runs well on the new server and the community wants it, then I think we can make it work. One aspect of it is TemplateData, which makes templates user-friendly to visual editor users. If we do decide to install the visual editor, then we should take it seriously and plan on adding TemplateData to as many of our templates as we can. This is a project I'd like the proposer and community to keep in mind when voting and help with if it were to pass.
So I guess the order has to be this: 1) Wait until the new server in 2024. 2) I'll test the visual editor and see if performance is acceptable. 3) If it's doable, community proposal and discussion on the matter can proceed. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 15:34, February 25, 2023 (EST)

Visual Editor proposal[edit]

Commenters at the Visual Editor proposal made a good point that I should have asked you first if this proposal is acceptable or not. If not, I'm ready to cancel it. Spectrogram (talk) 07:41, February 26, 2023 (EST)

Yes, based on the above section it will have to be canceled now, with the possibility of revisiting next year. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 10:57, February 26, 2023 (EST)

Question[edit]

Hi there, This user threatened to report me if I undo their edits. It stemmed from a misunderstanding over at the Mario Mover Gallery. It truly was not my intention to cause any trouble, I'm just doing my best to clarify the context of the art. I have also messaged a couple of pratrollers about it, but have not heard anything back. I don't want to come across as spamming this message, I just wanted to get the word out and I don't want to cause anymore trouble. Thank you and hope everything can be sorted out!

CSS table width[edit]

Hi. This edit forced tables to appear 1px narrower than their natural width. It seems that this hack was added to fix something, but unfortunately it caused another problem:

{| class=wikitable
! Test 1
| The quick brown fox
|}

normally displays as

+--------+---------------------+
| Test 1 | The quick brown fox |
+--------+---------------------+

Now it displays as something like

+------+----------------------+
| Test | The quick brown      |
|  1   | fox                  |
+------+----------------------+

To see the effect on real articles, see Three Beautiful Sisters#Felissa T. At least on my computer (Chrome on Windows 10) the "ー[1]" of "チェリー[1]" is moved one line down, even though the page is wide enough to set the name horizontally. Is there any way to avoid this? --Dine2017 (talk) 23:04, March 31, 2023 (EDT)

SmashWiki seems to have problems with internet trolls using ip addresses to repeatedly ban evade and vandalize.[edit]

Given that many Discord servers require a phone number before you can post in them, how would it be easy to require each account and IP address here to submit sensitive personal info such as bank card numbers, drivers license or government issued ID or phone numbers in order to edit?

MarioWiki itself wouldn’t use the data for any reason outside of logging it in a database to auto detect bans. Would it be difficult to verify info such as if bank numbers is real or something or would it result in hackers who hack into MarioWiki itself gaining access to your data?

This would also ensure that if an user is banned here, then tries to edit using an IP address, the info they provide would automatically flag and ban them instead of us having to do the annoying process of detecting if they are the same user.

R.O.B.Remembered Old BuddyROBSSB4EN.png 10:04, April 19, 2023 (EDT)

There are many things that can be done to lock-down a wiki, but generally a conscious decision is made to keep things open and revert vandalism rather than have a restrictive system. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 10:52, April 19, 2023 (EDT)

Why exactly were all the "MW:[TEXT]" redirects removed? I see the bot moved all instances of them to a "SMW:[TEXT]" title, but that also doesn't show up in the search results. I had an idea to update the template, also I updated on Wikipedia a bit. I believe there are more users that born in 1999 than 1989 on this wiki. Which is better, 1972 at time of 1986, or 1999 at time of 2013? Whether the status quo is better? Windy (talk) 18:06, April 26, 2023 (EDT)

How do I change the colour of image frames in my monobook? -- KOOPA CON CARNE 22:27, May 7, 2023 (EDT)

Edit: And is it possible to change the colour of the navigation/tool boxes on the left side of the web page? -- KOOPA CON CARNE 22:33, May 7, 2023 (EDT)

I suggest you familiarize yourself with your browser's "inspect element" (Ctrl+Shift+C) to see what selector MediaWiki uses for styling a given element.

div.thumbinner {
	color: white;
	border-color: red;
	background-color: blue;
}

body.skin--responsive .pBody,
body:not(.skin--responsive) .pBody {
	border-color: green;
	background-color: orange;
}

And in case you didn't know, "Show preview" can be used on your CSS page to test changes to elements visible on that page. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 08:37, May 8, 2023 (EDT)

And I suggest you drop the condescending attitude. I know about the preview function on that page, the problem is that there are many elements that cannot be previewed in there, and no "Preview X page" exists on my end to aid me with that (templates have it, on the other hand). The only conducive thing I could do was repeatedly save my changes. I'm also using inspect element on the regular when I extract certain web content for documentation, it just didn't occur to me I could do so here too... -- KOOPA CON CARNE 08:59, May 8, 2023 (EDT)
I'm not trying to have any attitude; sorry if it came off that way. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 09:03, May 8, 2023 (EDT)
My reaction was overblown. I construed the previewing function as obvious enough not to merit an explanation, hence why I thought you were being facetious with that piece of advice, but I've come to accept that you were genuinely trying to help. Help[edit]

Some of users seem that dissatisfied with editing the year from the age template from SmashWiki. A conflict of opinion has occured. Please help. Also, please unprotect the age template from this wiki. ADD: The template is too outdated and I updated it. (In Wikipedia, it was written in 2006, but this is so obsolete that it needs an update in our wiki. Here) Windy (talk) 07:4409:33, May 24, 2023 (EDT)

A decision has been made. Let's set as August 12, 2005, Mariowiki's found date, as an example of an Age template. And the second date is 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. date, September 13, 2020. Example: {{age|August 12, 2005|September 13, 2020}} Windy (talk) 10:36, May 24, 2023 (EDT)
On this wiki, the template will remain protected and any changes to the example will be the staff's decision to make. Please do not suggest any more changes to it. On SmashWiki, you should listen to the admins. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 12:55, May 24, 2023 (EDT)
Thank you for change to more important date on Mariowiki! I'll look for a suitable answer on Smashwiki. Windy (talk) 13:14, May 24, 2023 (EDT)

After block expired on Smashwiki, I didn't checked the messages from Discord (before joining), and I said nonsense on talk page and I was blocked with unpleasant remarks. My weird obsession with that template must be gone off. Can I ask you one thing; can you update and protect the template from Smashwiki? I couldn't sleep properly. I'll listen to what the admin says. Thank you. Windy (talk) 10:50, June 2, 2023 (EDT)

I'll focus on this wiki and not to deviate from it. However, I can't say anything because I'm afraid that I'll be cussed by admins, please quietly improve any templates across multiple wikis. Thanks for discussion. Windy (talk) 13:10, June 2, 2023 (EDT)

Proposal on allowing fanon content[edit]

Last year on June 18, the Drawn to Life Wiki allowed fanon content on that wiki under the Fanon namespace. This time, I want to make a proposal on allowing fanon content on the Super Mario Wiki. You will be able to either create the "Fanon:Home" namespace if you want to or know how to create custom namespaces or create "MarioWiki:Fanon" if you cannot create any new namespaces. Lastly, the Content category will receive a subcategory known as Category:Fanon, which consists of the subcategories Category:Original characters, Category:Theories, Category:Alternate universes, Category:Fanfiction, and, via the {{fanon-image}} template, Category:Fanon images. For example, fanon pages respectively about moves, galleries, events, game mechanics, diseases, bestiaries, histories, pre-release and unused content, staff, consoles, and implied elements each belong to the "Theories" category, fanon pages respectively about characters, allies, and bosses belong to the "Original characters" category, fanon pages about third-party elements belong to the "Alternate universe" category, and fanon pages about fan history and fan-made media belong to the "Fanfiction" category. May I please make the proposal on allowing fanon content on the wiki? GuntherBayBeee.jpgGuntherBayBeeeGravity Rush Kat.png 15:30, June 5, 2023 (EDT)

Unfortunately that would be a potentially big scope expansion into a content area that I'm just not looking to get the wiki involved with, so I'm sorry to say I would veto that proposal. I would encourage the Pikipedia/Pikmin Fanon model and go for a separate wiki. Hidden orphaned pages[edit]

Hello! As of now, Special:LonelyPages is empty. However, there is a slight problem with that. It appears it considers any page "not orphaned" that is linked to from other namespaces outside of (Main) or Gallery: (File:, User:, Talk:, etc). The pages that are actually orphaned, that are only linked to from file descriptions or talk page discussions, simply don't show up. Would it be possible for you to change that? While on that subject, is there any way to make the "upload by URL" not automatically populate (and irreversibly overwrite) the filename bar? Because when uploading via discord link (which I do frequently), all that does is add two extra steps to an already tedious process where I have to move it to the file description section to avoid it being lost. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 20:25, June 28, 2023 (EDT)
Unfortunately that's very much a built-in MediaWiki thing, but I did have an idea for you. You could temporarily disable your browser's JavaScript next time you have a batch of uploads to prevent the autofill from happening. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 20:54, June 28, 2023 (EDT)

Template question[edit]

Hello,

Let's say I have a template with three parameters, designated A, B, and C. When I give them values, the template produces the following:

This is a two-column list
  • A
  • B
  • C

Now, if I give B and C values but I don't give parameter A any value, I want the values of B and C to move one space up the list, such that B supersedes A, and C moves to the left column, like so:

This is a two-column list
  • B
  • C

How do I program a template to do this? If I just nest "if" expressions in each parameter definition so that the next parameter is displayed in its place if it's not given any value, said next parameter is going to repeat on the following spot in the list anyway, like so:

This is a two-column list
  • B
  • B
  • C

And that's an utter programming n00b move. Is there a wiki function that recognises whether a parameter had already been filled on the same template, and does something based on that? -- KOOPA CON CARNE 20:08, July 2, 2023 (EDT)

I don't know of a wiki function that would make this easy. Ideally you'd want to design the template in a more forgiving way, like this:
{| style="border:solid black"
|'''This is a two-column list'''
|-
|<div style="column-count:2"><!--
-->{{#if:{{{A|}}}|*{{{A}}}}}<!--
-->{{#if:{{{B|}}}|*{{{B}}}}}<!--
-->{{#if:{{{C|}}}|*{{{C}}}}}<!--
--></div>
|}
If this doesn't help, I think I could be more useful if I knew more about the template you're working on. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 23:36, July 2, 2023 (EDT)

I wasn't aware of the "column-count" attribute; that actually solves my problem partially, thanks! Having created the template in question, two issues remain:

  1. the template may split the text in one entry between two columns. Here, for instance, the German text is moved to the column on the right while its heading stays on the left.
  2. if multiple parameters in a row aren't filled in, the result is a jarring empty space where the next item on the list should be. For instance, if the Kor and Por parameters (both immediately following the Ita parameter) are left out, you can notice an empty space between the Italian and Spanish entries:
  • Two-column list:
    • English:
      english
    • Japanese:
      japanese
    • Chinese (simplified):
      simplified chinese
    • Chinese (traditional):
      traditional chinese
    • French:
      french
    • German:
      german
    • Italian:
      italian
    • Spanish (Latin America):
      spanish (latam)
    • Spanish (Europe):
      spanish (europe)

A question regarding your server storage[edit]

As you're already aware, lately I've been updating various articles on Mario Kart Tour subjects with in-game blurbs. Because the game only provides these to the end user for a relatively brief period of time, not everyone has ready access to the game's files, and there aren't always video recordings of this information available online to cite, I've taken upon myself to take screenshots featuring these blurbs and upload them to the wiki to act as citations. My concern is that the number of screenshots I have uploaded and will continue to upload is... quite large, to say the least.

  • Each item has a blurb localised in 11 languages, meaning I have to upload 11 screenshots at once for a single item.
  • The game currently has 265 drivers, 336 karts, and 225 gliders, totalling 826. Not nearly as many items have been given blurbs, but let's assume all of them have. Each screenshot, when optimised with TinyPNG, ends up being an average of 160kb; times 11, that's 1.76mb of material uploaded for 1 item; times the number of items shown above, that's 1453.76mb worth of content in our scenario.

Considering the wiki has around 70GB of media files as of writing, would you be ok with a potential 1.5 gb more to the wiki's storage, or would you prefer I found another way to cite the information mentioned above? -- KOOPA CON CARNE 15:46, July 17, 2023 (EDT)

I have moved the relevant pages and edited their templates, but I need PorpleBot to replace all their respective links across the wiki. Confused about this change[edit]

I guess this probably came about from Super Mario Bros. Wonder, but...I disagree with it being done this way. I know there's been public discussions on what to do with game filenames, and of the two proposals that got canceled, the latter was leaning in the direction of doing something about internal data with the development tier in the comments. Reclassifying game ("internal") data from development names to website ("external") filenames conflicts with at least two proposals: the encyclopedia one specifically outlines that Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia remains a lower priority than internal names, citing the Lumacomète example as a reason, and in the website proposal, no one was conflating game filenames with website filenames, and rather, there seemed to be general agreement of keeping them both distinguishable. Plus, there are cases where the unused data/string is not necessarily a filename or even "internal" per se. It's a weird technicality.
As unrelated as possible: if there is a question we want to ask more privately, would the best way to do it be via forum DM? LinkTheLefty (talk) 13:41, November 4, 2023 (EDT)

Sure you can DM me. I only did that change because the page mentioned website files but said nothing about game files. Given that we are creating articles based on game files, surely they should be mentioned somewhere in the policy and be a part of that hierarchy. I don't personally care where they fall; I can move the mention to number 5. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 13:56, November 4, 2023 (EDT)

Tabber[edit]

There is discussion and proposals going on about extensive use of the tabber template. I am aware you said before that you didn't like it being used here. I was wondering if your thoughts on it are the same as then or if they have changed. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 10:13, November 13, 2023 (EST)

I personally hate tabber and I think it's gimmicky. I'd rather just pick an image and cover the rest of the variations in the article body. Regardless of my feelings, I added it after the result of a democratic proposal (this isn't a dictatorship). Regarding the JavaScript point: I can have the tabber fail in one of two ways: (1) only show the first image, or (2) show all the images. #1 is good if the additional images can be considered supplemental and hiding them isn't going to conceal important stuff from the user (for example, if those images also appear elsewhere in the article). #2 can make the infobox look kinda silly, but I agree that it makes more sense to use it if the images don't appear anywhere else in the articles so we don't degrade what those users are seeing. Given that several articles have removed images from the article body and put them in the infobox, I switched the failure method to #2. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 10:33, November 13, 2023 (EST)

Citation templates[edit]

Hello, Porplemontage. Since we do not have any citation templates, I used a cite web template onto my sandbox called cite web. Although, since there is no category, I think we could have Citation templates as one. What do you suggest? Derekblue1(talk)Daisy Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga-styled sprite 09:36, December 13, 2023 (EST)

Hey. Citation templates is certainly a good category name if we were to have at least a few of them (if it's just one it could probably be tossed in formatting templates), but that template would go against this proposal, so you'd need to do a new proposal to overturn that one before the template could be moved to the template namespace or used.
While I have you here: Note that the changes to MarioWiki:Article size were designed to make it less definitive and more discussion-based: 150 kB is simply when split consideration starts, but if it's decided to keep an article larger than that, that's allowed. That's not to say an article like Toad (species) couldn't be split into History of Toads just above 150K - Yoshi was actually split just under 150K months ago without complaint (so that's why the threshold was increased to 150K, since splitting at or around 100K didn't feel right to a lot of users while a 150K split was seemingly non-controversial, but in addition to the increase it's now meant to be an open discussion rather than a hard and fast rule). Thanks! --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 10:08, December 13, 2023 (EST)
Oh. Thank you for telling me about the failed proposal of citation templates. Let us see how the future proposal goes, but I will accept the fate if it does not come through.
For the article size question response, it took me a few hours to understand what you meant but I finally understand you are saying that splitting articles is meant to be an open discussion; that should show why Template:Split is there in the first place. I was excited to split pages straight away because they fit the 100kB threshold. That is when I ended up splitting up a few articles that have not been discussed in the first place until Mario reminded me on the wall that I stopped. Now I understand, for the Toad species, it is better to put a Split template and discuss user thoughts of splitting this. Derekblue1(talk)Daisy Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga-styled sprite 19:23, December 13, 2023 (EST)
After reading the proposal, I can see where they got the MarioWiki:Citations, so I think it was resolved that they choose not to have a template but a policy. According to some people, the proposal looked forced to tell others to use the citation templates for "professionalism". I will cancel the cite web template idea. It seems that if a page has at least four headings, and one of them has an unclosed italics '', such as:

then the following HTML will be output under the Vector 2022 skin:

<i>

The effect of the extraneous <i> is to make the whole page italic and extremely narrow. --Dine2017 (talk) 06:17, March 17, 2024 (EDT)

Potential mass-conversion of YouTube links from HTTP→HTTPS with bot(s)[edit]

From a sample of a mere 27 games (the ones in Category:Wii U games), 21 (± 1) YouTube links in the articles were still written within the articles as http://. If the statistic holds true for the 28,610 pages that are listed on the front page, this would result in Mario Wiki as a whole needing to convert a low-to-medium four-digit amount of links. Manually converting each link on each page would not be realistically possible, unfortunately.

I've built up some RegEx skills over the years, and if PorpleBot uses the syntax I've seen used for wiki bots, i.e. "$1" instead of "\1", I propose adding ([\=]|//|\s{1,})http://(www\.|m\.)?youtube\.com/$1https://www.youtube.com/ to the bot.

Starting with YouTube links would in theory an easy starting point, as its video IDs have remained unchanged for each video for almost two decades, whereas sites like IGN and Gamespot are much more prone to having old links to them end up on 404 pages. YouTube also has full 100.0% support for HTTPS on all of its pages, while many gaming sites and Nintendo official sites have it depend on their sites' sections. Undeletion/un-delete template request[edit]

Recently, a user went on a frenzy marking Smash redirects and miscellaneous pages for deletion due to misinterpreting a proposal (as clarified by the original proposer, they just wanted categories removed), and one of the sysops deleted several of them. Can a bot remove those templates and someone undelete (and restore the history of) the erroneously deleted redirects? Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 21:31, April 28, 2024 (EDT)

APNG[edit]

Are APNGs allowed on Super Mario Wiki now? I would so abandon GIF. Also, it seems like things are better for APNG overall since it is natively supported by modern web browsers today without the need of a plug-in like in the early days. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 23:45, May 19, 2024 (EDT)

Yes, animated PNG (and WEBP) are allowed. I think WEBP may produce smaller file sizes? --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 23:51, May 19, 2024 (EDT)
Alright then. WEBP, I do not know much about that format, other than people hating it when they try to copy the image to their computers or phones. I don't know if it is lossy, loseless, or both. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 00:03, May 20, 2024 (EDT)
I have most certainly compared APNG vs. AWebP with the same footage, exported from VSDC editor. APNG: 18 MB. AWebP: 0.8 MB. The reasons people cite as to why they hate it, is an outright blatant lie spread by an anti-WebP cult measuring tens of millions of followers based on a decade-old myth, as nowadays all competent image viewers and editors, all browsers, all wikis, and all social media except Bluesky for some reason, have no problem at all with handling WebP. DandelionSprout (talk) 04:26, May 20, 2024 (EDT)
If you are looking to use the copied picture for personal use, then yeah, there will be detractors that want PNG, JPEG, GIF, or other common formats, due to its widespread nature going over decades of support and compatibility compared to other image formats that have come and gone. However, if you are to use the image for web-based presentations (such as a Wiki) where copy-ability isn't the priority but rather presentability and low storage space requirements are, also having the software natively support the format, then yeah, WEBP is a good alternative. Newer technologies comes with benefits. I'm also sure that formats we enjoy today had growing pains when first introduced. WEBP may be no different in terms of file format history. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 18:45, May 20, 2024 (EDT)

Can the wiki handle a template with a "switch" function that has over 500 alternatives...[edit]

... or will this fry readers' machines? I need to know for this. -- KOOPA CON CARNE 14:45, May 20, 2024 (EDT)

I think we can handle it. {{Button}} has over 200 and seems fine; I don't think a few hundred more will do major damage --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 15:32, May 20, 2024 (EDT)
One thing I forgot to mention is that this template would make use of the switch function upwards to 80 times, maybe more. And on a page like this one (where I intend to use my W.I.P. template), you can multiply that number by about 20. How is that? If it's too much I'll abandon my current project. -- KOOPA CON CARNE 15:41, May 20, 2024 (EDT)
Maybe the page will render a little slower; I don't have a problem with that. Whether or not the new template is worth the speed hit is up to you and the community. Unfortunately we can't really know the performance without just building and testing it. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 15:58, May 20, 2024 (EDT)

Product ID template[edit]

The IDs has been added on Template:Game infobox, it depends on the regions. Only half has been added. This template would be based on {{serials|jpn=|usa=|eur=|}}. Windy (talk) 16:30, May 23, 2024 (EDT)

I see. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 11:12, May 25, 2024 (EDT)
Adding Product ID template is done. I want to see restoring File:Flag of Earth.png. Windy (talk) 11:02, June 25, 2024 (EDT)
The deletion reason for that file states "We don't use this flag... If there's a wordwide release, just list the regions or the date by itself." so basically we could just write the serial by itself without using the template. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 11:14, June 25, 2024 (EDT)

Dark Mode[edit]

Found out there is a dark mode for Super Mario Wiki. I prefer dark mode whenever possible. However, it seems like it dynamically alters colors of images (not a permanent change). Is there a way you can fix that where it skips applying the dark pallet to images? --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 22:13, May 24, 2024 (EDT)

Sorry, but it's not possible with the current gadget. Perhaps with a different system down the road, but nothing in the immediate future. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 11:12, May 25, 2024 (EDT)

Bot request[edit]

Hi, I changed the Brazilian rating board on Template:Ratings from "DEJUS" to "ClassInd" (Classificação Indicativa), as the former is not used anymore by any official sources (site and guide, for example), the latter being the name of the platform and the one used in official stuff and elsewhere (including Wikipedia since 2014).

Could you please run a bot to change dejus to classind? Yook Bab-imba 12:26, June 6, 2024 (EDT)

Marquee[edit]

Looping animation of all Special Items available to Petey Piranha and King Boo in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!; intended to take up the same 64x64px space as the individual icons the others use while still showing all. Animation inspired by deprecated <marquee> HTML tag.

A goal I've had for a while is to replace the cycling .gif on Mario Kart: Double Dash!!#Drivers with an actual cycling collection of images identical to what is on there now, similar to HTML's depreciated "marquee" tag - the main reason being I don't like using "made up" images so to speak, and there's too many there to just have them all placed on the page together compared to the other characters'. I've gotten the HTML and CSS down, but unfortunately some of it requires keyframes that can only be implemented on the Common.css, and would be inconsistent depending on how many images there are (in this example, there are ten, plus a loop back to the first image). The raw HTML for this is:

<div class="marquee">
<div class="marquee-inner">
<img src="https://www.mariowiki.com/images/d/da/FireballIcon-MKDD.png?20110827122359" alt="Image 1">
<img src="https://www.mariowiki.com/images/2/26/HeartIcon-MKDD.png?20110827122544" alt="Image 2">
<img src="https://www.mariowiki.com/images/9/94/YoshiEggIcon-MKDD.png?20110827122615" alt="Image 3">

<img src="https://www.mariowiki.com/images/6/6f/GreenShell3Icon-MKDD.png?20110827122838" alt="Image 5">
<img src="https://www.mariowiki.com/images/4/42/RedShell3Icon-MKDD.png?20110827123038" alt="Image 6">
<img src="https://www.mariowiki.com/images/a/a8/GiantBananaIcon-MKDD.png?20110827123121" alt="Image 7">
<img src="https://www.mariowiki.com/images/b/b6/BowserShellIcon-MKDD.png?20110827123155" alt="Image 8">
<img src="https://www.mariowiki.com/images/d/d8/BobombIcon-MKDD.png?20110827123226" alt="Image 9">
<img src="https://www.mariowiki.com/images/3/34/GoldMushroomIcon-MKDD.png?20110827123255" alt="Image 10">
<img src="https://www.mariowiki.com/images/d/da/FireballIcon-MKDD.png?20110827122359" alt="Image 11">
</div>
</div>

And the CSS is:

.marquee {
width: 64px;
height: 64px;
overflow: hidden;
position: relative;
white-space: nowrap;
}

.marquee-inner {
display: flex;
position: relative;
animation: marquee 5s linear infinite;
}

.marquee img {
width: 64px;
height: 64px;
flex-shrink: 0;
}

@keyframes marquee {
0% {
transform: translateX(0);
}
100% {
transform: translateX(-1000%);
}

Adapted to mediawiki/wikitext formatting, I have:

<div class="marquee" style="width: 64px;height: 64px;overflow: hidden;position: relative;white-space: nowrap;"><div class="marquee-inner" style="display: flex;position: relative;animation: marquee 5s linear infinite;">[[File:FireballIcon-MKDD.png]][[File:HeartIcon-MKDD.png]][[File:YoshiEggIcon-MKDD.png]][[File:ChainChompIcon-MKDD.png]][[File:GreenShell3Icon-MKDD.png]][[File:RedShell3Icon-MKDD.png]][[File:GiantBananaIcon-MKDD.png]][[File:BowserShellIcon-MKDD.png]][[File:BobombIcon-MKDD.png]][[File:GoldMushroomIcon-MKDD.png]][[File:FireballIcon-MKDD.png]]</div></div>

The problem remains that "keyframes" bit, which would require changing the common.css, and unless a template is made that can indicate the number of frames needed into that (about ten times the number of images, not counting the repeated first one), then this will remain at a standstill. Do you have any ideas? Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 18:09, June 7, 2024 (EDT)

Sure, you can make a template and then define the keyframes for that template. I added it as a test. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 19:16, June 7, 2024 (EDT)
Thank you so much! Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 19:49, June 7, 2024 (EDT)

MvsDK levels[edit]

If I recall properly, there was a discussion on the matter and the idea was extremely unpopular since it's inaccurate to the original game title "Mario vs. Donkey Kong" and as such comes off as disingenuous to identify it as being so. Granted, I can't find this discussion considering the multitude of pages it could be attached to. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 14:00, June 22, 2024 (EDT)

I moved the levels to their new names from the remake, as is current policy. If folks want to get clever with doing a conjectural name rather than the latest official name, or invent a new identifier scheme like the old "(SNES)" thing we used to do for Mario Kart, then that would be creating a new policy exception that requires a proposal (or the staff could invent and implement one I suppose). And if someone wants to do a proposal, then by all means have at it. But the game has been out for over four months, and since there's no passed proposal stating otherwise, the levels should be using their latest official name. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 15:58, June 22, 2024 (EDT)
Eh? I'm more referring to how ice and carnival levels in the Switch remake didn't exist in the original, so treating them as part of the original game-identified numbering is off. I don't believe version-exclusive level numbering was included in the proposal, just de-subtitling of non-contradictory subjects. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 20:06, June 22, 2024 (EDT)
Remember that for an article such as Level 4-1 (Mario vs. Donkey Kong), the reason the identifier exists is to disambiguate the article from other articles with the exact same title: Level 4-1 (Mario & Wario) and Level 4-1 (Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars). Mario vs. Donkey Kong takes care of that; it is sufficiently different from Mario & Wario and Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars to resolve the same-title conflict, so there's no need to resort to using "Mario vs. Donkey Kong for Nintendo Switch". Mario vs. Donkey Kong is the valid title of the Nintendo Switch version just as much as it is the valid title of the Game Boy Advance game, and the fact that it may only appear in one version of Mario vs. Donkey Kong should be made evident in the article opener and infobox rather that making the article title longer to take care of that. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 21:06, June 22, 2024 (EDT)

Mobile login[edit]

Hi. Why is the "Keep me logged in" option only available for the desktop version of the site and not for the mobile version? This is inconvenient for me because I have to temporarily switch to desktop view when logging in on my mobile devices if I want to keep it long. --Dine2017 (talk) 23:57, July 10, 2024 (EDT)

Good question. I will change it so it shows on mobile. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 00:12, July 11, 2024 (EDT)

lua for sprite galleries[edit]

So when making galleries for sprites, I like to have the images at raw size so they don't look crusty and inconsistent. Problem is, as the coding for Gallery:Golf (Game Boy) demonstrates, that uses a lot of data in HTML. With the help of some tools, I have uncovered a possible solution via template, but it will require a Mediawiki:Common.lua page and a .lua file to be added to work. The code for the file, if I am correct, would be:

local rawgallery = {}

function rawgallery.__index(self, key)
if key == 'rawgallery' then
return self.rawgallery
end
end

function rawgallery.rawgallery(frame)
local minWidth = 40
local maxWidth = 256
local maxHeight = 256
local validClasses = {'blackbg', 'graybg'}

local images = {}
local classes = {}

for i, arg in ipairs(frame.args) do
if arg:match('^class=%S+') then
arg = arg:gsub('^class=', '')
if #arg > 0 and string.find(arg, '%S') then
table.insert(classes, arg)
end
else
table.insert(images, arg)
end
end

local html = ''
html = html .. '<div style="display: inline-block;">'
for i, image in ipairs(images) do
local imageSize = mw.parser.parseTemplate( '{{ImageSize|' .. image .. '}}' ).frame.args[1]
local width, height = imageSize:match('(%d+)x(%d+)')

-- Apply minimum width
width = tonumber(width)
if width < minWidth then
width = minWidth
end

-- Apply maximum width/height constraint
if width > maxWidth then
height = math.floor(height * (maxWidth / width))
width = maxWidth
end
if height > maxHeight then
width = math.floor(width * (maxHeight / height)) <nowiki> height = maxHeight
end

local bgClass = ''
if #classes >= i then
bgClass = ' ' .. classes[i]
if not string.find(bgClass, validClasses) then
bgClass = ''
end
end

html = html .. '<gallery widths=' .. width .. 'px heights=' .. height .. 'px' .. bgClass .. '>'
html = html .. image
html = html .. '</gallery>'
end
html = html .. '</div>'
return html
end

return rawgallery</nowiki>

Tell me if this is doable or not. Thanks! Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 17:32, July 11, 2024 (EDT)

Let's get this done with a rawsize CSS class instead. Check this out:
You might need to CTRL+F5 first. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 18:23, July 11, 2024 (EDT)
Hey hey, that works! Thanks a ton. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 19:13, July 11, 2024 (EDT)
One thing I do note is that the height parameter doesn't seem to work with it, which could be an issue for long-and-thin images. Is there a way so both parameters work? (Also, unrelated question, I noticed certain more recent versions of unicode aren't supported by the wiki right now, I'm specifically looking at the "half-filled star" symbol from unicode 11, which comes out as an error rectangle: ⯨) Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 20:47, July 11, 2024 (EDT)

Unfortunately, I can't make the heights and widths work perfectly due to technical limitations. The default rawsize gallery will always have square boxes. But I've added wide and tall classes to be able to do rectangles with it:

When it comes to Unicode, I think it's up to your device to support the character. Do you see the character here but not on the wiki? --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 21:38, July 11, 2024 (EDT)

Huh, no I don't. I did see it in the place I originally copypasted it from, though, which is an odd inconsistency. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 22:09, July 11, 2024 (EDT)

On a related note, something that was brought up in the comments of my proposal, is there a way (in gallery or normal images) to change image size by percentage rather than exact pixel number, like width=50% or 200%? I've tried doing either in both contexts before, nothing has worked. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 18:12, July 14, 2024 (EDT)

It's mostly not possible. But I added a way to scale up rawsize gallery images a few set amounts:

CTRL + F5 --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 18:59, July 14, 2024 (EDT)

Number of days template creation[edit]

I need a template for the number of days, so I created for Template:Age in days now. But the Module hasn't been created yet.

Example:

  • {{age in days|9 Jul 1981|4 Dec 2011}} gives 11,105
  • {{age in days|12 Aug 2005}} gives 6,910 (as of July 13, 2024)

Can you adjust the content in the template? Also, an expression error occurs when using the vertical bar on Age template hasn't been fixed yet. Windy (talk) 15:19, July 13, 2024 (EDT)

A question about revisions in history[edit]

I am curious about the way MediaWiki sites handle each individual edit revision visible in a page's history. Do two revisions, with all the content in them, fully occupy distinct portions of the server's storage as though they were entirely different pages? Or is there a system that recognizes which content is different and which is duplicated across the two revisions, and tries to allocate only the differing content new space?
If it's the former, I may want to be much more careful editing the wiki; usually I do try to be conservative with the number of consecutive edits I perform, but there are instances where I discover new errors and kinks just after I'm done logging in a new edit, and I feel pressed to edit the page again. I'd like to know if these successive edits pile up to become a burden on the storage. -- KOOPA CON CARNE 09:56, July 24, 2024 (EDT)

New revisions are initially saved in fulltext (the former), but every few years I run a script to compress and concatenate old revisions which converts them into the latter. That being said, storage is not a concern at this point and no amount of editing would be considered a burden on it. There are other reasons to try and limit successive edits (mainly to keep history and recent changes somewhat concise), but I understand that sometimes we keep finding stuff to fix and it happens. No worries about storage though. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 10:25, July 25, 2024 (EDT)

New gallery class[edit]

There's a proposal on removing the remaining uses of the {{tabber}} template that already passed yesterday. Will you please add the "slideshow" class to the "<gallery/>" tag? Because Doc supported for Walugi Time that this would be perferable to the template. Thanks! GuntherBayBeee.jpgGuntherBayBeeeGravity Rush Kat.png 15:32, August 16, 2024 (EDT)

Slideshow already works, it's just got some bugs to it. Namely size - I attempted to use it for the MKW vehicles, they always ended up too big for a few moments before shrinking down to the intended size. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 15:40, August 16, 2024 (EDT)

Gallery slideshows do not function on mobile. Since the majority of our readers are on mobile, that makes it a pretty bad system and one we should avoid using. I'm not going to install any alternative tab systems such as TabberNeue. Since {{tabber}} has been rejected, that means that one main image should go in the infobox and the rest should be relocated to the article body and/or gallery section. The question is, which one should go in the infobox. I think we should show whichever version of the subject has the highest-quality graphics in the infobox. That usually means the latest depiction, although if for example the latest depiction is a handheld/mobile game and a console version has better graphics, then show that console version. The idea is to feature the "best" version that has been made so far, which has been least restricted by technical constraints. Consistent with how the infobox image for Mario isn't his first appearance, or strictly his most recent appearance, but a relatively recent and high-quality depiction. The wiki is a living, breathing site and I think it makes sense for our infobox images to update over time (much like how we update subject names when there's a remake) to reflect the best the franchise has to offer, with all the other depictions still shown later in the article of course. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 00:05, August 17, 2024 (EDT)

As such, you will need to replace that with :''Samples removed by the administrators.''. Thanks! GuntherBayBeee.jpgGuntherBayBeeeGravity Rush Kat.png 20:25, August 26, 2024 (EDT)

It's annoying how almost all pages with the Foreign names template have the Articles with unsourced foreign names category[edit]

Should only pages with the ref needed template in the Foreign names template have the Articles with unsourced foreign names category? We only accept localized names from other languages in official localizations, But If there's a localized name from a language that didn't receive a localization for this game, I think we should add the ref needed template, Should you do that? Justgetmycatch (talk) 06:02, September 1, 2024 (EDT)

I get that it's a little annoying, but the category simply reflects the reality that is the size and scope of this proposal, which states:

It should be made mandatory for every name listed in the names in other languages sections to have a citation attached to it. Yes, this will be very, VERY difficult to do considering the sheer number of pages that will need to be gone through.

As pages such as Octoomba come into compliance, then the page is removed from the category. That's great; working as intended. It's still early days of this requirement. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 13:02, September 1, 2024 (EDT)

Bot request[edit]

Hey Steve. I'm not sure if this is possible (and it's also somewhat overdue), but could you remove all links and redirects to the deleted Pokémon page? Thanks. Power Flotzo (talk) 14:44, September 13, 2024 (EDT)

Would this feature be possible to implement?[edit]

I made a talk subject here about a way to update the discussion system. While a separate template would obviously be possible, I was wondering if having the {{talk}} template on a talk page could create some sort of visible-only-to-logged-in-editors notice at the top of the corresponding page to alert that there is an unresolved discussion there, making it more visible and easy to remove when it is resolved. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 16:38, September 13, 2024 (EDT)

Thanks a bunch! That should make things much smoother. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 20:11, September 13, 2024 (EDT)

Possible renaming for a template[edit]

I've thought about proposing an idea to create a template that is separate from Template:Ratings and that concerns film ratings. Right now, we only have video game ratings, but the proposal I had in mind would create a brand new template that covers film ratings and the new template would be called Template:FilmRatings and Template:Rating would be renamed to Template:GameRatings. If such a proposal were to happen, a bot would have to rename every instance of Template:Ratings so that it uses the game ratings. TheUndescribableGhost (talk) 10:18, September 24, 2024 (EDT)

On second though, I believe these could be included into Template:Ratings instead. TheUndescribableGhost (talk) 13:48, September 24, 2024 (EDT)

Yet another bot request[edit]

Can all instances of links to "Crocodile Isle (Donkey Kong 64)" be moved to "Crocodile Isle"? Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 23:28, September 27, 2024 (EDT)

Sorting By Letter[edit]

What are your thoughts adding tcrf:Template:Filenav (from a different website) to Category:Images to be reuploaded with higher quality (Super Mario Wiki)? See tcrf:Category:Images to be replaced (different website again). --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 22:43, October 15, 2024 (EDT)

well, that edit answers my question. Thanks for editing the category. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 16:39, October 16, 2024 (EDT)

User talk subpage suggestion[edit]

I have two subpages, and I notice I don't get alerts for them like I do for my primary user talk page. Think it's a good idea to enable it? LinkTheLefty (talk) 18:25, October 19, 2024 (EDT)

As far as I know, the closest thing possible would be for you to watch the subpages and then enable watchlist notifications in your preferences. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 18:46, October 19, 2024 (EDT)

Mentions Notifications[edit]

Hello. I need some help. I do not receive any notification when someone mentions me (Where they put an @ before my username). I checked my preferences and I have it set to alert me if someone mentions me, but it doesn't happen at all. I'm kind of stumped as to why it's not working. Do you know what's going on? Shadow2 (talk) 16:13, October 24, 2024 (EDT)

They have to use the template @Shadow2 and include their signature. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 16:15, October 24, 2024 (EDT)
Yes, they have done this. In fact, you just pinged me right now, but I didn't receive any notification for that either. Shadow2 (talk) 23:30, October 24, 2024 (EDT)
Sorry, you're right, the extension wasn't picking up custom signatures. I hacked it and I think it works now. @Shadow2 Let's see. --Steve (talk) Get Firefox 12:01, October 25, 2024 (EDT)
That works, thank you very much! Shadow2 (talk) 18:38, October 25, 2024 (EDT)

Flip-Flop Folk category[edit]

The article "Flip-Flop Folk" and its category were deleted as a result of this proposal, please can you run a bot to remove "Category:Flip-Flop Folk" from all articles? Mario jumping Nightwicked Bowser Bowser emblem from Mario Kart 8 20:25, October 29, 2024 (EDT)

Actually, can you wait on that? It's a lot easier for me to keep track of who needs the new categories with the Flip-Flop Folk one. I'll let you know when I'm done moving everything over, then you can run it. Technetium (talk) 20:27, October 29, 2024 (EDT)
Ok, you're all good to run it now! Technetium (talk) 21:08, October 29, 2024 (EDT)
Actually I'm stupid, there is no bot to run now that all instances of the category were manually removed by me, lol. Technetium (talk) 21:19, October 29, 2024 (EDT)

Recent proposal[edit]

As a result of this proposal passing, I'm requesting that some links be changed. IF any more should be, I will add more, but for now, here are my requested changes:
