Bugaboom is a huge green Mandibug, with six legs and eyes that have a demented look to them. Unlike most Mandibugs, his body is flat instead of rounded. He will attempt to consume the player with his retractable mandibles, but after attacking him once, he will reveal his wings and fly rapidly around his planet and drop explosives from the underside of his body. Bugaboom can be best described as a beetle with one solid shell that's green and has a marking of a blast on the middle of the shell. Also, the mandibles look much like an ant's pincher.

Bugaboom's eyes look strangely hypnotic, meaning that he may not have been the one who planned the Mandibug attack and just may have been hypnotized into assaulting Mario. Of course, this may also mean that Bugaboom is simply demented.

Strategy

Bugaboom flying

This battle practices Mario's use of the ground pound. In the first Super Mario Galaxy, the planet on which Mario fights Bugaboom has several dandelion stalks, a Bee Mushroom, and some water. The planet also has a Black Hole under it. To defeat Bugaboom, Mario must ground pound his back three times. The first time, Bugaboom will charge at Mario when he sees him, and Mario must jump and/or fly over his back and then ground pound. The second time, Bugaboom rises into the air and flies, and Mario must either fly or use a dandelion stalk. The third time, Bugaboom will turn red and go on his side while flying along so that Mario will not be able to jump on him. The player must hit him while he is not on his side. In the third round, Bugaboom will also fire bombs out of his stomach.

Bugaboom makes his second appearance in Super Mario Galaxy 2 when Mario reaches the Puzzle Plank Galaxy. His battle tactics are the same as in the previous game, but Mario must change his strategy: in lieu of the Bee Suit, Mario must become Cloud Mario in order to defeat Bugaboom.

Trivia

  • The name Bugaboom is a pun on the word Bug-a-boo, which is a term for monsters, generally minor children's book monsters.
  • Bugaboom shares his boss music with King Kaliente and Topmaniac. However, Bugaboom's boss music speeds up after he takes damage, which never happens with the King Kaliente and Topmaniac fights.
