Blargg
Template:Species-infobox Blarggs are large monsters commonly found inhabiting pools of lava in underground caverns. Originally, Blarggs resembled lazy-eyed dragons, but more recent depictions show them as being anything from blob-like beings with large mouths, arms and beady eyes to humanoid, limbed creatures. There are even some species of Blarggs that dwell in water, not lava.
History
Super Mario series
Super Mario World
Blarggs first appeared in Super Mario World as fairly rare enemies, encountered primarily in the Vanilla Dome. When Mario or Luigi approach a Blargg on a Skull Raft, he or she will be able to see the eyes of the Blargg before they dip back into the lava, moments before lunging at the player. Blarggs could not be defeated by any conventional means for the most part and can only be avoided, though Yoshi is capable of jumping on them and, with some difficulty, eating them. The player can also opt to Spin Jump if lacking a Yoshi, although this method only prevents one from taking damage if landing on a Blargg or its eyes.
Super Mario World television series
Blarggs, though never referred to as such onscreen, appeared in two episodes of the Super Mario World animated series.
In the episode "The Wheel Thing", Mario and Luigi, having been banned to the Lava Pits, begin attempting to cook a pizza over a fire. The smell from this cooking pizza causes a Blargg to emerge from a nearby lake of lava and begin to chase Luigi, attempting to eat the plumber. Luigi is rescued from being devoured, as Mario swoops down and saves his brother as Cape Mario.
In a later episode titled "Mama Luigi", a Blargg makes a brief appearance. Luigi and Yoshi, while running away from a pair of Tyrannosaurus Rex, use a Blargg's head as a stepping stone to cross a river of lava.
Super Mario Adventures
Several Blarggs make a minor appearance in Nintendo Power's Super Mario Adventures comic, appearing in the lava flooded basement of Bowser's Castle. These Blarggs are used as stepping stones by Mario to reach a Warp Pipe leading to another level of the castle.
Yoshi series
In Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Island DS, Blarggs themselves didn't appear, though various sub-species, such as the Gargantua Blarggs, did. These Blarggs are drastically different in appearance from their forerunner, however they attack the same way - by rearing up out of the lava when the player approaches. Yoshis cannot touch the Blarggs themselves, however they can subdue the creatures by hitting them with Eggs. These games also introduce a species of water-dwelling Gargantua Blargg known as Nep-Enuts
In Yoshi's Story, Blarggs are once again altered, being larger and given small arms, they appear in only one level, Stage 2-2: Blargg's Boiler.
Sub-Species
- Gargantua Blargg / Super Big Blargg – These types of Blarggs live in lava like their namesake.
- Crusher Blargg – Gargantua Blarggs that have enormous in proportions and have the ability to crush normally unbreakable stones.
- Nep-Enut – Blarggs that make their home in water. They are identical to Gargantua Blarggs except they are blue.
- Support Ghost – These are rare Gargantua Blargg or Nep-Enut spirits. However, they mean no harm.
- Magmaargh – Large stationary Blarggs that are capable of eating Mario in one bite, as in instant KO.
- Magmaw – Smaller Magmaarghs, these circle a lava planet and bite asteroids.

Trivia
- The Czar Dragon, the boss of Barrel Volcano in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, resembles a Super Mario World Blargg. Likewise, the Red Dragon appearing in Stage 6-4: Magma Castle of Yoshi's Story bears a large resemblance to Super Mario World Blarggs as well.
- The dragon characters of the Paper Mario series also have their Japanese names end in "-nbaba". This connection to the Blarggs seems to be lost in translation, as their English names end in "-tail" instead (for example, Gonbaba to Hooktail).
- Blarggs are referenced to in both Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time and Super Paper Mario; in the first game, they are mentioned by Kylie Koopa while in the other, a Sammer Guy named Raging Blargg can be fought.
- Blarggs, their appearance resembling the Super Mario World version, were originally going to appear in Super Mario 64 as enemies in Lethal Lava Land and Bowser in the Fire Sea, as they were found in the game's coding.
