Daikon (大根だいこん) are a type of radish farmed primarily in East Asia and mainly recognizable for their long white roots. They have appeared various times in the Super Mario franchise and related games, though several of these appearances are removed in western localizations or replaced with the similar-shaped carrots.

History[edit]

Super Mario World[edit]

Mario jumps up a giant daikon in Super Mario World

Giant-sized daikon appear as tall-and-thin platforms in athletic stages in Super Mario World, similar to the previous islands and Mushroom Platforms. Their leaves appear in different colors. Spring platforms are sometimes mounted to their sides.

Mario Party 6[edit]

In Mario Party 6, daikon are the focus of the Japanese version of the minigame Garden Grab, where a giant one must be pulled from the ground with a teammate before the other team does so. In international releases, they are replaced with carrots.

WarioWare series[edit]

In the WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$! minigame Wario Kendo, the Kendo-practitioner swings a daikon on the first and third stages.

In the original Japanese version of WarioWare: Smooth Moves microgame Carrot Away, the character pulls out daikon, though these are switched to carrots in international releases.

Mario Kart Tour[edit]

Main article: Daikon Rocket

In Mario Kart Tour, a kart based on the daikon called the Daikon Rocket appears as a variation on the previous Carrot Kart.
