Moving torches[1] are Burners that pivot back-and-forth in the Super Mario series and Mario Party 9. They are typically rarer than normal Burners, appearing in one level in the games within which they appear. The base of moving torches is identical to the one found on enemy cannons. They move all on their own.

History[edit]

Super Mario series[edit]

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]

Burners on World 4's Airship in New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Moving torches in World 4-Airship.

In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, moving torches appear only in World 4-Airship. They are the most numerous Burners in the course and their flames are of three different lengths. Unlike normal Burners, moving torches do not turn off their flames. However, they pivot 180° and this brings their flames out of the way of the player character in timeable intervals. They do moving once parallel with the ground for three seconds before pivoting back in the opposite direction. Most moving torches are positioned beneath Semisolid Platforms, where only their flames peak over the top. Others are positioned near narrow corridors that temporarily block access to Mario. The flames do not damage the Mechakoopas on the airship, but their bases to block them from moving. Bob-ombs immediately explode when they make contact with their flames.

New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit]

Three moving torches appear along the Boarding the Airship course in the original New Super Mario Bros. U campaign. In this game, they are fastened the walls of the airship and only having long flames. The player character must ride on a Remote-Control Platform whose track feeds through the path of their flames. Like New Super Mario Bros. Wii, their flames do not turn off and they pivot 180°.

In New Super Luigi U, two moving torches appear fastened to the sides of a Cog near the end of the only course Flame-Gear Tower. Their flames are shorter than the ones from Boarding the Airship. They otherwise function the same way.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder[edit]

Four moving torches appear within a sub-area on the Petal Isles Flying Battleship in Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Like the normal Burners in this game, they emit green flames and emit from green-ringed bases. Like previous appearances, their flames do not turn off, but the ones in this room pivot only in 60° intervals and pause only for one second before moving back in the opposite direction. Two moving torches occur to the right of the pipes connected to this sub-area that pivot 90° and pause for three seconds. Unlike the normal ones first encountered on the battleship, the subsequent Burners encountered in this course have the same bases as moving torches but do not pivot and function like the normal ones.

Mario Party 9[edit]

Moving torches appear in Hazard Hold from Mario Party 9, being obstacles that the solo player can control. When they are activated, they rotate 90° once, then turn off again.
