The sewer rat[1][2] is the boss of the Macro Zone in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. It is a rat with a rather prominent nose that it apparently uses for defense. Its fight is similar to the battle with Morton Koopa Jr. and Roy Koopa in Super Mario World. The sewer rat runs up walls and into pipes, and it eventually crawls to the top of the ceiling and falls straight onto Mario. If he jumps on top of the sewer rat three times or hits it with six fireballs, it is defeated. The rat then falls off the screen, and Mario gets one of his six Golden Coins.
The sewer rat also appears in the first Mario vs. Wario comic. On Mario's way to visit Wario, the sewer rat is the first enemy Mario encounters. Mario mistakenly assumes that the sewer rat just wants to have a party, and he pulls its needle-point nose off to use as a party-popper, causing the rat to faint.
