In Donkey Kong 64, Chunky is one of the Kongs captured by the Kremling Krew at the start of the game. Chunky is found in Frantic Factory in the Storage Room, where he is rescued by Lanky Kong. Once Chunky is free, he can collect green bananas, coins, and Blueprints.

Chunky Kong fights the boss of the Fungi Forest, which is a rematch with Dogadon; when he defeats him, he gains one of the keys to K. Lumsy's cage. In Fungi Forest he has to go through a minecart ride in the well and collect a certain amount of coins to get a Golden Banana.

During the final battle against King K. Rool, Chunky is the final Kong to go up against the Kremling King. At the start of the fight, K. Rool will turn invisible and Chunky has to use the Chunky pad to turn invisible and see the Chunky barrel in the middle. Chunky then turns into a giant and is able to knock K. Rool against the opposite corner as he charges for him. Eventually, K. Rool is knocked out by Chunky. He celebrates his victory as K. Rool gets up with the intent of attacking Chunky before being distracted by Candy Kong and hit with a boot shot from a bazooka by Funky Kong. In the credits, he is seen playing with Tiny Kong, but accidentally throws her up onto a cliff.

Throughout the game, Chunky gains a variety of bizarre abilities from drinking Professor Cranky Kong's various potions or buying from Funky and Candy. His first individual ability is Primate Punch, while the second is Hunky Chunky, and the third one is Gorilla Gone. Chunky's weapon is the Pineapple Launcher. His instrument is triangle; with this he can use the Triangle Trample. Aside from this he can learn Simian Slam, Super Simian Slam and Super Duper Simian Slam, which all Kongs use.

During the DK Rap in the intro, Chunky also briefly wore a 1970s-era disco outfit, although he quickly changed into his regular outfit as soon as he realizes that none of the other Kongs are wearing the outfit. Chunky Kong is also playable in the Multiplayer mode, were he has four alternate colors for his vest to choose from. Aside from his blue vest with a green and yellow checkerboard pattern, he has a green vest with a light and dark purple pattern, purple with a blue and light blue pattern, and red with a yellow and red pattern.

"Donkey Kong in When the Banana Splits"

In the comic Donkey Kong in When the Banana Splits, Chunky helps the other Kongs track down King K. Rool when he steals the Golden Bananas. Chunky is the first one to attack the Kremlings, leading to a large battle between them and all of the Kongs. Chunky and his companions eventually emerge victorious, and return home with the Golden Bananas. In the comic, he is incorrectly drawn with teeth for an unknown reason.

Donkey Kong Country 3

Chunky appears in one of Funky Kong's minigames in the Game Boy Advance remake of Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! Here, he is one of the Kongs that appears in the water and has to be protected from being taken away by speedboats piloted by Kremlings.

Chunky Kong is physically the strongest of the Kongs, able to easily lift and toss boulders that not even Donkey Kong can move. However, he is the slowest of the heroes and cannot jump very high.

    • Super Simian Slam: He can press blue buttons with his face on them.
    • Super Duper Simian Slam: He can press red buttons with his face on them.
    • Primate Punch: With this ability he can perform a powerful punch that is capable of breaking large doors among other things.
    • Hunky Chunky: With the help of Crystal Coconuts he can turn into a giant and pick up large objects, as well as hit large switches. He can also climb up the thick palm trees in the secret area of Jungle Japes that he couldn't at his normal size, though the other Kongs cannot climb up the thick palm trees either. While he is in this form, the thin palm trees and all types of pads are absent, and the Tag Barrel is translucent.
    • Gorilla Gone: With the help of his Kong Pad he can turn invisible and see invisible things. While invisible, he also cannot be detected by spotlights.
  • From other Kongs:
    • Triangle Trample: He uses a triangle which can defeat almost every enemy and could also make special things happen when used on a Music Pad.
    • Pineapple Launcher: He can shoot pineapples to damage enemies and to activate switches.

Physical description

Chunky has the typical ape attributes like the other Kongs, and he has a similar build to his younger brother Kiddy Kong, having a big torso with large and long burly arms, showing his strength. By comparison, his legs and feet are quite small. Chunky's head is also fairly big, partly due to his large mouth that is even bigger than Kiddy's. Like Kiddy, Chunky has brown eyes, though his are a darker shade and are also unconnected with each other. His ears are also very small. Chunky is the biggest member of the Kong family, being taller than Candy Kong, and is more than twice as heavy as Donkey Kong, weighing 2000 pounds (907 kg) at his normal size, compared to Donkey Kong, who weighs 800 pounds (363 kg). Additionally, Chunky is described as being quite young, in spite of his huge size and deep voice.

Chunky's clothing consists of a white t-shirt with a vest over it that is blue on the front and has two yellow and orange buttons. The backside is colored yellow and green in a checkerboard pattern. He wears a red cap similarly to Diddy Kong's that is turned backwards, but his does not have the Nintendo logo on it. Chunky also wears a black belt with a golden belt buckle around his waist.

Personality

Chunky is portrayed as a strong character, but with a sweet personality. Chunky is sweet and gentle and prefers not to fight unless he has to in order to help or protect those he cares about. He's normally cowardly, as if the player highlights him in the Tag Barrel, he'll shake his head and point at Tiny to try and get an excuse not to go. He also was afraid of Dogadon, and dropped to his knees to beg him not to hurt him. Despite that, Chunky can gather up courage to help out those in need.

Official profiles and statistics

Donkey Kong 64

  • Bio: He's big. He's bad. He plays the triangle. Chunky is something of a primate paradox: brutal when the situation demands it, yet almost meek at other times. He's also not the sharpest knife in the drawer, so he'll need all the help you can give him. If there's heavy lifting to be done, however, Chunky is the Monkey to see.

Finally, he's here for you
It's the last member of the DK crew
This Kong's so strong, it isn't funny
Can make a Kremling cry out for mummy
Can pick up a boulder with relative ease
Makes crushing rocks seem such a breeze
He may move slow, he can't jump high
But this Kong's one hell of a guy!

  • Instruction booklet bio from Professor Cranky Kong: Let me guess, this one's the big guy? Sheesh, I don't know how they come up with these names. Anyway, he's Kiddy's older brother and lists crushing, smashing and pounding Kremlings as his hobbies. Hey, perhaps there is a glimmer of hope for these bums after all. I bet he's really slow though.

  • Name: Chunky Kong

  • Hobbies: Beating the triangle
    Eating (a lot!)
  • Favorite dish: Pineapple Compote
  • Favorite movie: The Karate Kong 3
  • Greatest hero: Kong Hogan

Although Chunky is young in years, he is nevertheless almost as strong as Donkey. The well-mannered giant gorilla is, in the truest sense of the word, a great guy, and stick to Lanky, his uncle once-removed, like a leach. Chunky is crazy about toys and see the Kremlings also as giant play figures whom one can give a good beating.

The giant ape, who is always in a good mood, feels most comfortable in company, especially when he can take part in a tournament of the best wrestlers.

Everyone wonders why Chunky, who is always pretty clumsy, always win the tournaments. Lanky says it's because he beams at his opponents and throws them off their guard in this way.

Chunky has not been spared from being taken prisonner, either, and the solitude is especially difficult for him to take.

Hopefully, his friends will be at hand soon...
