MAX UP Heart
- Not to be confused with Life-Up Heart.
MAX UP Hearts (formerly known as HP-Up Hearts, and HP Plus in the British English version of Paper Mario: Sticker Star) are special hearts Mario can find during his adventure in Paper Mario: Sticker Star, Paper Mario: Color Splash, and Paper Mario: The Origami King.
History
Paper Mario: Sticker Star
In Paper Mario: Sticker Star, these hearts will increase Mario's maximum HP by 5 and will fully refill his health bar, functioning similarly to Heart Containers from The Legend of Zelda series. It also increases the attack power of his First Strike by one for every two collected. There are 16 HP-Up Hearts to find and by collecting them all, Mario will have a total amount of 100 HP.
Locations
Location | Method |
---|---|
Bouquet Gardens | After the Fan is removed and the wind has settled, Mario must return to the Toad gardener, who is weeping over his now dead flower bed. Mario must enter Paperize mode and place three Fire Flower stickers, three Ice Flower stickers, or a mix of regular or shiny variants in the indicated spots. The Toad then rejoices and gives Mario an HP-Up Heart, in addition to doubling the stickers that were placed. |
Hither Thither Hill | After placing the Warp Pipe in the underground level, Mario is ambushed by the Big Buzzy Beetle. After it is defeated, Mario automatically obtains the HP-Up Heart. |
Surfshine Harbor | Mario must enter Surfshine Harbor and head to the third building, where the door is out of position. Mario must enter Paperize mode, remove the wall, then place it in the correct position. Mario must enter the building and head out the back door. After this, he must continue right and enter the next door. Now back inside, he must hop up the crates to find the HP-Up Heart in the last room on his right. |
Drybake Desert | When Mario reaches the top of the pyramid at the end of the level, he must move up the stairs on the left and slide down the ramp, then simply hop onto the next platform to reach the HP-Up Heart. |
Yoshi Sphinx | At the top of the Yoshi Sphinx where the piece of the Sticker Comet rests, Mario must move north despite the lack of a path. Mario falls off the sphinx and onto a platform down below containing the HP-Up Heart. |
Sandshifter Ruins | From the start of the underground maze, Mario must head down the slide on the right, and once again down the next slide on the right. He must then enter the door and open the third coffin from the left to find the HP-Up Heart inside. |
Leaflitter Path | This HP-Up Heart only appears after completing World 3-12. Mario must go through the entire level to find the HP-Up Heart waiting in front of the piece of the Sticker Comet. |
Wiggler's Tree House | Starting from the base of Wiggler's Tree House, Mario must head up the stairs and into the room with the table and the fireplace. On the right side of the room, he must place a Secret Door sticker on the wall and enter the hidden room to find an HP-Up heart inside. |
Tree Branch Trail | Mario must move into the second area and head to the right of the first large tree, where he must hop onto the farthest back ledge and move left to enter a secret cave with the HP-Up Heart waiting inside. |
Gauntlet Pond | In the second area, an arrow on the ground can be seen pointing toward the wall, previously concealed by the poison. Mario must follow and enter the hole in the wall to find the HP-Up Heart. |
Stump Glade | Snifit or Whiffit must be completed a second time, after Gooper Blooper has been defeated. The HP-Up Heart waits in the storage room where the piece of the Sticker Comet is. |
Ice Flow | As Mario is running up the ice a second time, he may notice the HP-Up Heart on a ledge to the right. Soon after, there is a point where Mario can hop onto a lower part of the ledge. He must jump on and head right to acquire the HP-Up Heart. |
The Enigmansion | After completing Whiteout Valley, Mario must return to the mansion and head into the lobby, the room to the left of the main entrance room. Instead of the Steward lounging on the sofa, the Forebear is seen sipping away tea in his place. Mario must sit on the chair and have the Forebear talk for a moment. Once he is finished, he gives Mario the HP-Up Heart. |
Shy Guy Jungle | Mario must proceed into the right exit from the main area with the piece of the Sticker Comet. Instead of whacking the big red flower, he should walk behind it and move to the right to find a secret hole in the wall. An HP-Up Heart waits inside. |
Rumble Volcano | Right before Mario's fight with Petey Piranha, there is an HP-Up Heart to the left of the moving platform with the Chain Chomps. |
Decalburg | After saving the Traveling Toad in the five different worlds, Mario must head back to Decalburg and into the residential section. He must enter the house on the right to find a room with five different postcards from each of the worlds that were sent to the Toad inside the house. Mario must read the fifth and final postcard. After he does so, the Toad bursts into tears before giving Mario the last HP-Up Heart. |
Paper Mario: Color Splash
In Paper Mario: Color Splash, Mario obtains an HP-Up Heart each time he collects a Big Paint Star, which increases his maximum HP by 25 as well as the power of his First Strike. When all six are collected, Mario reaches a grand total of 200 HP.
Paper Mario: The Origami King
- “*gasp* It's a MAX UP Heart! Hooray! Incredible! What...does it do? I mean, this is just a guess, but... it looks like you've got a bit more HP now, Mario! And is it just me, or do you look a bit stronger too? Wow, those MAX UP Heart things are great!”
- —Olivia, Paper Mario: The Origami King
MAX UP Hearts return in Paper Mario: The Origami King under their current name. Like in Sticker Star, they can now be found around the world in various locations. Each one increases Mario's maximum HP by five, ten, or twenty. The amount of damage Mario's attacks and First Strikes do also increases every time Mario's HP is increased to an even-tenth number. Collecting all hearts raises Mario's HP to a maximum of 200 (not counting HP boosts from Heart Plus accessories). Love Toad, whom Mario rescues in Shogun Studios, returns to Toad Town, and can tell him of the locations of any MAX UP Hearts that were missed.
A Collectible Treasure of MAX UP Heart (No. 38) can be found inside the Water Vellumental Shrine.
