In New Super Mario Bros. U, a Boss Sumo Bro awaits in the second tower located in Rock-Candy Mines. Boss Sumo Bro was a regular Sumo Bro until Magikoopa transforms him, somewhat changing his appearance and greatly increasing his size. He is battled in Screwtop Tower.

In battle, Boss Sumo Bro jumps between the platforms in the room, stomping them to make electric waves below him in attempt to damage the player. Stomping the ground makes it shake for a few seconds, which may stun the player. Sometimes, he stomps the floor twice.

To defeat him, the player has to jump and hit the bottom of the platform where Boss Sumo Bro stands, causing him to fall on the back of his shell. While Boss Sumo Bro is stunned, the player must jump on him. He or she must to do this three times to defeat him. The Note Blocks in the room are quite useful for this because it is impossible to stomp on his head due to the spike.

New Super Luigi U

Boss Sumo Bro reappears in New Super Luigi U, having the same role from the original game. He is found in his new tower, Sumo Bro's Spinning Tower.

Mario Golf: World Tour

In Mario Golf: World Tour, a Boss Sumo Bro costume is available for Miis to wear, and they can also use a ball and set of golf clubs designed based on a Boss Sumo Bro.

A Boss Sumo Bro, alongside his underlings, appears as a boss in Paper Mario: The Origami King, having been folded into origami by King Olly. He is fought in front of the entrance to Bowser's Castle. In battle, he is always accompanied by a few smaller Sumo Bros., who will steal icons from the battle rings, rendering them unusable; though the player can get them back by defeating them. As per usual, Boss Sumo Bro. cannot be jumped on (except with the Iron Boots), but he can be hit with anything else without an issue, and he is especially vulnerable to ice-based attacks. After enough of his health is drained, he readies a powerful thunder attack that saps away a large chunk of Mario's health. Mario's best course of action is to fight back by using a Magic Circle, specifically one that can summon the Ice Vellumental in order to defeat him quickly.

Appearance

The boss has the same appearance to that of a regular Sumo Bro, except that he wears two towels on his shoulders, his eyes appear to be dash-like and slanted, he has a ring around his spike, and he is larger than the average Sumo Bro.

Trivia

  • Boss Sumo Bro is the only boss in New Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Luigi U that does not normally appear on top of the tower in the world map. He does, however, briefly appear on top of the tower after his defeat from the player or if the player is defeated and returns to the world map.
