Gnawtys are lazy-eyed beavers who are one of the most basic enemies Donkey Kong defeats. Their name is a pun on the word "naughty" and "gnaw".

The first appearance of Gnawtys is in the game Donkey Kong Country. Here they are the games most common and weakest enemy. A Gnawty can be defeated by simply jumping on its head, or by throwing a barrel at it or using an Animal Buddy. In a few levels of the game Gnawtys riding giant flying stone wheels named Millstones appear. These wheels will either chase Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong down or act as obstacles. Donkey Kong Country also had two giant Gnawty bosses named Very Gnawty and Really Gnawty. In the Game Boy Advance version of Donkey Kong Country they are all gray instead of green.

The next appearance of Gnawtys was in Donkey Kong Country's Game Boy sequel, Donkey Kong Land. Here Gnawtys were once again common enemies.

Gnawtys make a reappearance in the Nintendo 64 game Donkey Kong 64. Here they are commonly found in the area Jungle Japes and around Donkey Kong Island. Gnawtys are also, rarely found in the area Crystal Caves. These Gnawtys could be defeated by simply hitting them with any type of attack. Gnawtys serve as the weakest, most easily defeated enemy of the game, and were featured in the K. Rool Arena in Jungle Japes, in "Beaver Brawl". Also, there's an unlockable game in which the player as Rambi the Rhinoceros has to beat as many Gnawtys as possible before the time limit reaches zero. In this game, Gnawties could be found either light blue-colored or gold-colored. The latter awarded a total of ten points. Each time a Gnawty is encountered, it makes a strange, beeping and repetitive sound.
