Drill Moles are mole enemies found in the Tree Zone of Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. To attack, Drill Mole burrow underground and pop up under Mario. However, Mario could swiftly jump before the Drill Mole popped up, thus landing a hit on its head. Fireballs are also effective, but only when the Drill Mole has surfaced. Drill Moles are usually found in low-lying areas like pits or ditches. Montey Moles are probably based off them, due to their similar appearence, and attack pattern.
