Spike Eels[1] are enemies that appear only in Super Mario 3D Land. They are magenta-colored Unagi with purple spikes on their backs and three big yellow spikes on their head; the yellow spikes slightly resemble hairs. Their tails are also spiked. Each Spike Eel has a big mouth with white lips and a single sharp tooth.
History
Super Mario 3D Land

In Super Mario 3D Land, Spike Eels appear only in underwater tropical levels, notably in World 3-2, World 7-1, and Special 2-2. Spike Eels stay in holes and swim in Mario's (or Luigi's) way, like Unagi and Gringills. They take 15 hits to defeat with the Fire Flower or Boomerang Flower, but can be defeated in a single hit with invincibility or by transforming into Statue Mario and crushing them. They can also be attacked from the front or behind.
Unused appearances
Super Mario Odyssey
At least one Spike Eel was originally going to appear in the Underwater Tunnel to the Lighthouse from the Seaside Kingdom in Super Mario Odyssey with their appearance from Super Mario 3D Land, as shown in the area's concept artwork, but they were eventually replaced by Maw-Rays.[2]
