Toads, also known as Mushroom People or formerly Mushroom Retainers, are the dominant species of the Mushroom Kingdom. Toads are native to almost every city in the entire kingdom, including Rogueport, but most prominently Toad Town. Many Toads are also loyal servants and citizens to Princess Peach and the Mushroom Kingdom. Numerous members of the species serve Peach as castle attendants, guards or as her Mushroom Retainers. Toads seem to live and act very similar to humans from the real world.

Appearances

Super Mario Bros.

In Super Mario Bros., Toads were called Mushroom Retainers. They appeared in each of the game's castles. After Mario destroys the False Bowser, he frees the imprisoned Toad, who famously informs him that his Princess is in another castle. In Super Mario All Stars, a compilation of all the main Mario games up to the point of it's release, there are as many Toads as the castle's world's number (one in World 1, two in World 2, etc.).

Super Mario Bros. 3

Super Mario Bros. 3 had a Toad in every castle of the Mushroom Kings. When Mario or Luigi entered the castle, the Toad would ask them to get the Magic Wand to transform the King back to his original form. If Mario or Luigi die on the airship, it will move to another place in the world. After it moves, Mario and Luigi are still able to visit the castle and the panicked Toad.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Toads lived in various towns, such as Mushroom Kingdom, Rose Town and Seaside Town. Many Toads were shopkeepers or inn owners and helped Mario and his party by offering their service. In Rose Town, Mario had to help the Toads which were paralyzed by Bowyer's Aeros. In Seaside Town, the inhabitants, mostly Toads, were imprisoned in a shack by Yaridovich and Mario had to rescue them. Few Toads also appeared in remote areas such as Monstro Town and inside Barrel Volcano.

Super Mario 64

Many Toads were found inside the rooms of Princess Peach's Castle in Super Mario 64. They informed Mario about Bowser's takeover of the castle in the beginning, and gave him various hints about the Power Stars, a few of them even giving Power Stars to Mario. In the remake Super Mario 64 DS, a Toad also told Mario to find various keys to Peach's drawers. Every time Mario brought a key to the Toad, a new minigame would appear and become available to play in the rec room.

Luigi's Mansion

Toads appeared throughout the big mansion in Luigi's Mansion. They had been sent to the Mansion by Princess Peach to look for Mario, and hid from the darkness in several places. When Luigi met one, the Toad could save Luigi's progress.

Super Mario Sunshine

An entourage of Toads accompanied Mario and Peach to Isle Delfino during the events of Super Mario Sunshine. Toadsworth was among them. They were usually found around Delfino Plaza, often worrying about the Princess after her capture. The Toads offered Mario various hints, such as ground pounding crates to receive coins. However, they did not have any other important role in the game.

Paper Mario Series

Toads appeared in Paper Mario as the main residents of Toad Town. There was also one in each Toad House in all towns of the game, except for the one in Star Haven. According to Goombario, they had been sent there by Princess Peach to help the people of the towns. The Toad inhabitants of Dry Dry Outpost, known as Dryites, have turbans instead of mushroom caps. Also, there is a Toad martial artist, which calls himself The Master. He runs a karate dojo in Toad Town, and has two pupils named Lee and Chan. After Mario and his partners defeat Lee and Chan, they'll be able to challenge The Master, himself. The Master is fought three times, with each battle getting harder, and his HP increasing by at least 25 each time. If he is defeated once, then Mario and his partners are awarded the Third Degree Card; If he is defeated a second time, then they are given the Fourth Degree Card; If The Master is defeated for a third and final time, then Mario and his partners are awarded a Diploma. The battle(s) against The Master (as well as his students) are entirely optional, and The Master is considered by many to be Paper Mario's toughest boss. The Master's sister, Tayce T. was also a Toad Town resident. She was considered by many to be an extraordinarily good cook. She would also cook any item that Mario would bring to her. By mixing ingrediants, she could fuse the two items together (depending on what it is). During Chapter 4, a Shyguy will come in and steal her favorite frying pan, and Mario has to get it back. After that's done, Tayce T. will award Mario with a Cake, which is needed to get past Gourmet Guy and advance through the next area of Shy Guy's Toy Box.

The species appeared again throughout Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. This time they lived in almost every town, showing that Toads are not restricted to being residents of Toad Town. They are also owners of almost every shop found in the game. A large group of orange Toads had also gotten stranded in the Pirate's Grotto on Keelhaul Key along with Francesca and Frankie. Mario must use Admiral Bobbery's bomb ability to help them escape before defeating Cortez.

However, in Super Paper Mario, Toads did not make a big appearance. They were only seen in non-playable scenes and as parts of the audience when Mario performs stylish moves.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong series

Mario vs. Donkey Kong had Toads appearing as workers in the Mario Toy Company. The Toads were also kidnapped in the game at the final boss.

In Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis, Toads got a minor role as a crowd and also appeared at the end of the game.

Mario & Luigi Series

Super Princess Peach

Several Toads were captured by Bowser (along with Mario and Luigi) in Super Princess Peach. Peach had to rescue them. A Toad was captured in every world, and Peach would have to defeat the boss to free them. They appear in every boss level except Giddy Sky, where you free Luigi, and Bowser's Villa, where you free Mario.

Toads also appear in a mini-game, Toad Jump, that puts the player in control of a Toad who must jump over foes trying to get him. By blowing into the DS Microphone, the Toad can jump over his enemies to safety. If the player blows longer, the Toad jumps longer. A Toad also appears in the minigame Toad Tote, where he is all tied up and must be rescued.

Super Mario Galaxy

The same five Toads appearing in Super Mario Sunshine appear again in Super Mario Galaxy, this time aiding Mario in outer space. They call themselves the Toad Brigade, and unlike in Super Mario Sunshine, each of them are given a specific attribute. The red Toad, possibly the character Toad, is the leader, whereas the purple Toad is called the Mailtoad who delivers 1-Up Mushrooms sent by mail from Peach and letters from Luigi to Mario or Luigi. The green-spotted Toad has a pickax and is seen as adventurous, the yellow Toad is cowardly, childish and often sleeps, and the blue Toad is seen as smart, stereotypically wearing glasses. After Bowser kidnapped Princess Peach and stole her castle, they escaped and were scattered throughout the universe until Mario found them. They then appear often throughout levels to help Mario obtain the Power Stars.

Cartoons

Toads in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! were actually tiny humans with Mushroom Caps. Many Toads were featured in the series as well, however referred to as Mushroom People here.

As seen on the picture to the right, Toads in the comics appeared drastically different than their game counterparts.

Mushroom Caps

All Toads have special mushroom caps as the top parts of their heads (just like actual mushrooms). It is debatable whether these mushroom caps are actually parts of the Toads or sorts of hats. It should be noted that Toad often took off his mushroom cap in The Super Mario Brothers Super Show!, revealing a rounded head with a few strands of hair, and that the movements of Toads' mushroom caps in Super Mario Strikers suggest that they are more like hats than parts of the Toads.

The coloring of the spots on any respective Toad's mushroom cap reveals intimate details about their personality, especially in the Paper Mario series and the games that follow it. In fact, if Mario or another character talks to any Toad, they will behave like other Toads with the same colored cap as them.

  • Red Spots: Cowardly and subservient. Most common coloration. Example: Toad (post Super Mario Bros. 2)
  • Light Green Spots: Shy and always happy to talk to Mario. Second most common coloration.
  • Blue Spots: The smartest or youngest Toads have blue spotted caps.
  • Orange Spots: Very brave. First appeared in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
  • Yellow Spots: Loves to tell jokes. This coloration first appeared in Super Mario Sunshine.
  • Pink Spots: Very intelligent. This coloration loves to give Mario hints. Toadette seems to be one of them. First appearance was Super Mario Sunshine.
  • Purple spots: Bittersweet Toads, such as Chanterelle.
  • Brown Spots: Toads who are older have this coloration, such as Toadsworth (even though he had this coloration even when he was young).
