Leyden's assistant
Species Concordian humanoid
First appearance Mario & Luigi: Brothership (2024)
“Please don't fret, sir. I, for one, am on your side. As your loyal, trusty assistant, I shall clear up this matter!”
Leyden's assistant, Mario & Luigi: Brothership

Leyden's assistant, who is also Leyden's son, is a character in Mario & Luigi: Brothership. He aids his father, the chief of Bulbfish Island, in performing his job. However, Leyden's assistant grew frustrated with doing all of Leyden's work for him, so he came up with a plan to take the title of chief for himself.

When Mario and Luigi arrive on Bulbfish Island, they witness a crowd of islanders yelling at Leyden, furious at him for not doing anything about the island's Bulbfish eggs being stolen. Inside Leyden's house, Leyden's assistant claims that he is on his side, and that he will help settle the situation. Just then, Mario and Luigi enter, and agree to help catch the thief to gain access to the island's lighthouse.

While exploring Bulbfish Island's underground area for clues, Mario and Luigi find a secret office containing Leyden's assistant's daily journal and a to-do list. The diary entries reveal the assistant's disdain towards Leyden, the effects of Glohm on the island residents, and the assistant's plan to utilize the chaos caused by it to "put an end" to Leyden's "garbage". Mario and Luigi are suspicious of the assistant, but before they can let anyone know, Burnadette and Chilliam are arrested, with the assistant having convinced Leyden that they are the thieves.

After freeing Burnadette and Chilliam from their jail cell and catching Leyden's assistant underground, the brothers chase after him. He runs to the lighthouse, where he was hiding the Bulbfish eggs, and threatens to throw them into the sea. Before he can do so, Leyden approaches him, apologizing for being a horrible father and causing his son to want to spite him. The two appear to make up, with Leyden's assistant finally causing him "Dad," only for them to get into a physical confrontation. Feeling relieved, the assistant expects to be arrested, but the islanders refuse, wanting the assistant to continue doing his job. Thankful, Leyden's assistant vows to make up for his actions.

Leyden's assistant is one of the attendees at Burnadette and Chilliam's wedding.

In the side quest Guardian Spirit, Leyden's assistant tasks Mario and Luigi with finding a way to stop the security guard's brother from blocking the entrance to the Anglerfish Restuarant.

Daily Journal[edit]

Month 2, Day 14

Leyden scolded me again today. Ridiculous. Looks like he forgot he's chief in name only, and I, as his "assistant," do all the real work. I mean, is he really so helpless that he can't change a bathroom lightbulb all by himself?

Month 2, Day 26

I got a "surprise" after my island rounds today. Leyden practically pounced on me, saying, "My snack's late! Out goofing around again?" He looked like he'd just woken up from a nap. There was a trail of drool on his left cheek. HE should give ME a snack after that nonsense.

Month 3, Day 12

Islanders were acting weird during my rounds. Formerly friendly folk, they seemed different—afraid of sociability, standoffish, a little sick. Maybe something they ate?

Month 4, Day 1

Every day, more locals are acting very strange. So many of them seem to have an intensely strong dislike for their former island friends. Unease seeped into all corners of our once-happy home. It seems like everyone is on edge.

Month 4, Day 11

The bad vibes are making everyone miserable. There's a rumor going around, and folks are saying, "The sick islanders are Leyden's fault!" That's the scuttlebutt, anyway. I don't know if our little island can handle any more trouble. Or maybe... Maybe this is my big chance! What if I turn this turmoil into an opportunity? For so long now, I've put up with his garbage. I can put an end to all of that if I'm smart.

To-Do List[edit]

1. Get a new lightbulb for the bathroom.

2. Swap out Leyden's snacks for the new kind.

3. Move the diary hidden in this room to another location.
