Bristles are orange hedgehog enemies appearing in Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! and Donkey Kong Land III. They have spiky quills that injure Dixie and Kiddy Kong when touched. As such, they are considered equivalent to Spinies from Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. According to Dixie Kong's Photo Album, Bristles are categorized under the "Terrorfirma Tuff Guys" enemy class.
Summary
To directly defeat a Bristles, Dixie or Kiddy must roll into it from the front, otherwise the Kongs will get hurt from touching it. And unlike Spinies, Bristles are immune to team up throws, as performing the move injures the Kong thrown. Other ways to defeat a Bristles include throwing either a barrel or Steel Keg at it, or by having Squawks spit a coconut at it.
Bristles mostly appear in waterfall levels and jungle levels, and they appear in more levels in Donkey Kong Land III than in Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!.
In the level Konveyor Rope Klash, some Bristles curl up and hurtle themselves toward the Kongs. They are more hazardous, as the Kongs cannot defeat them by themselves. They can either defeat these Bristles with a Barrel or attack them when they assume their usual form. The rolling Bristles do not appear in Donkey Kong Land III. In the Game Boy Advance version, the rolling Bristles are featured in the Cranky's Dojo minigame, where Cranky must deflect 30 rolling Bristles as they appear from the left and right sides of the screen and bounce toward him. If Cranky is hit by a Bristles, he loses.
