The Gate or the gateway to the starry sky is a portal from the Comet Observatory to the Gateway Galaxy which appears in the Wii game, Super Mario Galaxy. It is a small floating island above the comet observatory with two of the observatory's "portals" linking to it; one from the Engine Room and one from the Garden. It is impossible to access the gate if one has not recovered the sixth Grand Star by defeating King Kaliente in the galaxy Bowser Jr.'s Lava Reactor. Once that star is recovered the Engine Room will be beaten and the Warp Pad to the gate will open creating a path to both the Gate and the Garden.
By passing through the Gate, Mario is able to return to the Gateway Galaxy and take another Warp Pad to the Garden. Just beside the gate is a Hungry Luma who will unlock and allow Mario to travel to the Boo's Boneyard Galaxy if it is fed with 1,200 Star Bits.
There is also a 1-Up Mushroom underneath the gate which can only be accessed by using a Red Star and flying right underneath it. The Red Stars are by the Garage and on the roof of the Bedroom after Mario completes Gateway's Purple Coins in the Gateway Galaxy.
In Super Mario Galaxy 2, if Mario completes the Grandmaster Galaxy's Daredevil Run, he will meet Rosalina on a final planet featuring a little house identical to the Gate. It is unknown if this planet with the house actually is the Gate.
