Sharks[1][2] appear in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins as enemies present in the first and second Turtle Zone levels. They swim slowly at first, but charge at Mario if he is nearby. Sharks can only be defeated from a Star, or rarely a Green Shell from the surface. Sharks wear boxing gloves, which they do not appear to use against Mario.
In volume 9 of the Super Mario-kun, Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi encounter a shark during their boat trip. The shark attacks them, but Mario throws Yoshi to the shark to defeat it, although Yoshi gets injured.
