After Mario floods the planet by luring a Bullet Bill to break a vault, two Ocean Small Turtles (which were semi-buried in the ground previously) emerge and start moving across the surface of the water. The objects' Japanese internal name, which translates to "Mercator Turtle (Ocean)," refers to a method of cartographic projection, seemingly in reference to their elliptical trajectory path relative to the planet's shape.
