Toadsworth is Princess Peach's longtime steward. However, he has never made an appearance until Super Mario Sunshine, where he comes along with Princess Peach and Mario to Isle Delfino. He also appeared in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, with a minor role right before Mario and Luigi left for the Beanbean Kingdom. He later travelled with Princess Peach to Beanbean Castle but remained there until the game's ending sequence, which revealed him to be good friends with Lady Lima.
He made a cameo appearance in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, driving the Parade Kart after a cup was completed. Although this kart could be unlocked after beating the All Cup Tour in the Mirror CC, Toadsworth was not playable. He appeared again in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, taking Princess Peach to the town of Rogueport, where he loses Princess Peach. Afterwards, he is usually found in the Inn. Rumors arose on the back of the billboard that he and Zess T. were seeing each other. Toadsworth made a cameo in Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour as a statue in the Peach's Castle Grounds. He again came to be in Mario Power Tennis as the referee. In New Super Mario Bros., he mans the Toad Houses.
He was playable for the first time in Mario Superstar Baseball, and is the host in Mario Party 7, as Toad once was. He also appears in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, where he is shown to have been taking care of Princess Peach since she was a baby and he was a spry young mushroom. He/they (as both young and old Toadworths work together) also teaches the Mario Brothers the field abilities needed to traverse the levels of the game.
It is said on Nintendo.com's page for the game that he is Peach's father, which would make him King Toadstool. However, he's a Toad, and Peach isn't. Additionally, in Mario Superstar Baseball, when naming all of the players on Peach's team, Lakitu says "And... your grandpa?! Oh, pardon me! Venerable Toadsworth!" While not made entirely clear, Lakitu may have at first been mistaken, but then corrected himself. His exact relation to her is still not fully understood, as Peach addresses him as "Toadsworth" (not as "Father" or "Grandfather") in Super Mario Sunshine.
Toadsworth is voiced by Charles Martinet.
In Japan, the character is known as "Kinojii" (ã‚ノã˜ã„), a portmanteau of "kinoko (the Japanese word for mushroom), and "ojii" (a Japanese colloquialism for an older man), although "Kinopio" (known as "Toad" in the U.S.) could also be used since the character is himself a "kinopio".
