Kutlasses are small enemies and members of the Kremling Krew in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. They are one of the enemies who do not reappear in Donkey Kong Land 2.
Kutlasses appear as either yellow or green. They wear a pirate hat and a black vest, and carry two large cutlass swords around with them, hence their name. Official artwork also shows that Kutlass has three toes on each foot, and the Kremling Krew insignia and red feathers on its hat. According to the game's manual, Kutlasses ordered their swords from an infomercial, which looked smaller on television. Their swords are about the height of their body.
Kutlasses resemble another type of Kremling enemy, Klanks, who ride in Roller Coasters in amusement park levels. Despite their resemblance, Kutlasses and Klanks do not have any similar traits.
History
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
Kutlasses appear in the later levels. If a Kutlass notices Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong it sprints toward them, attempting to slash them with their two swords. If the Kutlass misses the Kongs, its swords hit the ground, though within a few seconds, the Kutlass lifts up its swords again. Kutlasses almost always hold up their swords, which protect them the Kongs' jump attack. By attempting to jump on a Kutlass, the lead Kong gets injured, and the player loses that Kong. Kutlasses are only open to a jump attack is when its swords are on the ground. Even if their swords are up, Kutlass can still be defeated by a throwable object (such as a barrel) or a team-up throw. They can also be defeated by an Animal Friend.
The green variants only appear in levels of K. Rool's Keep aside from a Lost World level, Fiery Furnace. Green Kutlasses are both faster at attacking and pulling their swords off the ground.
In the ending's Cast of Characters, a Kutlass appears under the Kremling Kuthroats category.
In the Game Boy Advance, the Kongs can obtain a photograph of Kutlass from Rambi Rumble. Its photograph appears on the sixth page of the scrapbook.
