A Lurchin, as seen in Dixie Kong's Photo Album.

Lurchin are spiky green sea urchin-like creatures encountered in many underwater levels in Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! and Donkey Kong Land III. According to the game's credits, Lurchins belong to the "Aquatic Attackers" enemy class.

Lurchins do not attack Dixie Kong or Kiddy Kong directly. Instead, they will remain stationary or travel up and down in a set path, slowly opening and closing their shell. If the Kongs get too close to a Lurchin, they may end up being hit by the Lurchin's spiny shell.

Lurchins can only be defeated with help from Enguarde or Nibbla. However, Enguarde can only defeat Lurchins when their shells are open, or else he'll get hurt instead. As for Nibbla, while it can eat the Lurchins, it's not an advisable move, as this will worsen Nibbla's mood until it eventually attacks the Kongs itself. However, Nibbla does have to eat a specific Lurchin to reveal the path to a Bonus Barrel in Fish Food Frenzy.

One of Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!'s bosses is a giant Lurchin named Barbos.

In the level "Ripcurl Reef" (a level found in the area Pacifica, which is exclusive to the Game Boy Advance remake of Donkey Kong Country 3) a type of Lurchin with a yellow shell, purple spikes and green skin appears; these Lurchins are no different than a regular colored one.

Lurchins also appear in Donkey Kong Land III, although there is no real difference between the Lurchins of Donkey Kong Country 3 and Donkey Kong Land III. Barbos also reappears.
