“There's a connection here to deep space, far from your lands. We call it the gateway to the starry sky.”
Luma, Super Mario Galaxy

The Gateway Galaxy is one of the many galaxies from Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii. It serves as the opening level for the game. This is the first galaxy that is visited in the game, and after Mario clears the first level in the galaxy, he won't be able to return here until he unlocks the Gate later on in the game.

Planets/Areas

The Starting Planet.

This is the first planet (other than the Mushroom Planet) that Mario explores in this galaxy. It is where Mario first wakes up after being blasted off Princess Peach's Castle by Kamek in the opening cutscene. Here, he meets two yellow Lumas as well as the apricot Luma who will be traveling with Mario (or Luigi) for the remainder of the game. This is also where Mario meets Rosalina for the first time. The planet itself has four holes in its surface (two of which connect to each other directly through the center of the planet), many small patches of flowers, two connecting Warp Pipes, several Stretch Plants, two small pools of water, two small cottages, a ring of vertically-positioned stone columns, and a small castle-like monument on the top. The planet is also surrounded by a light blue atmosphere. Later in the game, Mario must use the power of the Red Star to collect 100 Purple Coins on this planet, enabling him to use the Red Star onboard the Comet Observatory as well.

After the credits have rolled after the player has collected 120 Power Stars and defeated Bowser for a second time, the ending sequence that plays occurs on this planet. In the sequence, Rosalina thanks the player and says that she will watch over them from beyond the stars. She then walks into the door of the small blue-roofed cottage on the planet and comes out of the door of the Gate, thereby revealing that the two are connected. It is also revealed that the Comet Observatory is most likely hidden somewhere on the planet (although it cannot be seen when the player actively explores the planet), as it emerges from behind the planet after Rosalina transforms it into a comet once again and pilots it away.

Super Mario Galaxy Trading Card Description

After Bowser's attack and blast that sent Mario drifting out into space, our hero wakes up on this planet. He's greeted by a Luma that wants to teach him important planet-hopping tricks. This is where he meets Rosalina, who grants him a critical power - the Star Spin. Mario will stop here again toward the end of his journey to acquire the power of flight from a Red Luma.

This is a planet made of nothing more than dirt and stone. Not only is it being eaten away by a Black Hole at its center, but it is also under constant bombardment by a meteor shower, so Mario must be very careful here. There are five yellow Star Chips on this planet that Mario must collect in order to proceed, as well as a rock with a 1-Up Mushroom on top of it.

The two Metal Planets in the Gateway Galaxy.

These are two metal planets which look very similar to one another. Both planets are brown in color, and have what appears to be metallic green power cables embedded in their surfaces which snake around the planets. In addition, both planets have tall spires that, when spun, will send vibrations across the planet, stunning all enemies within range including the Grand Goomba. There are many Goombas on both of these planets, as well as several Item Crystals. Also, on the second of the two is a Grand Goomba, the only one in the entire game. The Flipswitch Area is located inside the second Metal Planet, and is accessed via a Warp Pipe.

When Mario (or Luigi) enters the Warp Pipe on the bottom of the second Metal Planet, he will be taken to an inverted, spherical metal chamber with many Goombas and Flipswitches inside. To shut down the machine and save the first of seven Grand Stars in the game, Mario (or Luigi) must step on every Flipswitch found on the inside of the planet to change all of them from yellow to blue, while simultaneously avoiding the many Goombas and electric platforms. There are several coins floating in the air above the electric platforms.

Grand Star Rescue

Mario catches Luma disguised as a Star Bunny.

When Mario awakens on the Starting Planet, an apricot Star Bunny will challenge him to a game of hide-and-seek. The player will have to follow the Star Bunny around part of the planet until he reaches his two friends, after which all three Star Bunnies will run away and hide in various locations around the planet. One is found in a crater near a tree stump and a small pool of water, another in the grass surrounded by Stretch Plants near a Warp Pipe, and the last in the Warp Pipe. When Mario catches one, it will give him a clue as to where the remaining others are. Once the player catches all three of them, a small castle-like structure will appear on the top of the planet. Here, Mario will meet Rosalina, befriend Luma, and then gain the Spinning ability. Mario needs to Spin the nearby Item Crystal which contains a Launch Star that leads him to the Black Hole Planet. Here, Mario talks to a Luma who says that he had another Launch Star all ready for Mario to use, but that it was broken into five Star Chips by meteors. Mario must then collect the scattered Star Chips to reform the Launch Star and progress to the first Metal Planet.

On this planet, a Luma trapped in a cage asks Mario to free it, telling Mario that one of the Goombas on the planet should have the key. The player must then seek out the one Goomba on the planet that is larger than all the others, as only this Goomba has the key (this Goomba will not appear on the planet until the player talks to the trapped Luma). Once freed, the Luma transforms into a Sling Star, which leads Mario to the second Metal Planet. On this planet, Mario must defeat a Grand Goomba near the top of the planet and collect its key to free another trapped Luma on the bottom of the planet (unlike the previous planet, the Grand Goomba will be on the planet regardless of whether or not the player talks to the trapped Luma before freeing it). Mario must then follow the Luma into a Warp Pipe on the bottom of the planet, which takes him to the Flipswitch Area on the inside of the planet. It is filled with yellow Flipswitches and moving electrical platforms. A large machine in the middle of the room holds a Grand Star inside it. Mario must step on all the yellow Flipswitches on the inside of this planet to turn them blue, which will shut the machine down and allow Mario to retrieve the Grand Star.

Gateway's Purple Coins

This mission is only made accessible after the Garden has been unlocked on the Comet Observatory. When Mario enters the galaxy, Rosalina will greet him. A Red Luma notices how much Rosalina trusts Mario, so he gives Mario the challenge of collecting 100 Purple Coins which he has scattered around the planet to earn his trust as well. There are seventy coins located on the planet itself and thirty coins in the air. Mario must use the new Red Star power-up that gives him the ability of flight to reach the thirty Purple Coins floating in the air. Successful completion of this mission will award Mario the game's sole Red Power Star, and also allow him to use the Red Star power-up in the Comet Observatory whenever he wants.

Trivia

  • A planet found in the Deep Dark Galaxy resembles the Starting Planet of the Gateway Galaxy. It can be seen from a planet full of Electrogoombas, as well as the galaxy's Starting Planet. The planet is accessible via a cannon on the Starting Planet, and is much smaller than the one in the Gateway Galaxy. There are three Goombas here, and a yellow screw on the planet can be unscrewed by Spinning it, which will cause the planet to quickly shrink and disappear, at the same time revealing a large ring of many coins.
  • This is one of the two galaxies in Super Mario Galaxy to have only two Power Stars total, the other being the Buoy Base Galaxy.
  • When the player reaches the second of the two Metal Planets, they can see a few Airships in the background, though they are inaccessible.
  • The Grand Star Rescue mission was originally called The Imprisoned Grand Star.
  • The Starting Planet can be seen in Rosalina's Ice World in Mario Kart 7.
