Surf's Way Up is a Duel minigame in Mario Party 8, as well as a single-player minigame in Test for the Best. Its name is a pun on the phrase "surf's up."

Introduction[edit]

The two players find themselves standing on jetboards hovering over a short road-like expanse. When they reach the end of the expanse, the players are surfing openly through outer space. In the background, Earth can be seen.

Gameplay[edit]

The goal is to go through colored circular goals with different point values. However, the player must watch out for the Bowser goals with his emblem shown on them, or else their score instantly drops to zero. Whoever has more points at the end of the minigame wins. If both players have the same number of points, the minigame ends in a tie.

Ending[edit]

The winning player performs their victory pose on their jetboard and launches far ahead of the losing player and out of sight, while the losing player does their losing pose on their jetboard behind them. If the minigame ends in a tie, both players will perform their losing poses and the jetboards will not speed ahead.

Test for the Best[edit]

In Test for the Best, the player plays alone in this minigame and must go through as many circular point goals as possible, avoiding the Bowser goals, to earn as many points as possible. The scores required to earn a certain point total are as follows:

Grade Points earned Score required in minigame Title
A+ 1,000 800 points Cosmic Kahuna
A 900 680 points Stellar Surfer
B 800 560 points Wave Maker
C 700 440 points Surfin' Sophomore
D 600 320 points Surfin' Neophyte
F 0 N/A Wipeout Kid

In-game text[edit]

  • Hint"Avoid the Bowser goals. If you pass through one, your score will drop to zero!"

Trivia[edit]

  • If one of the veteran playable characters wins, they will perform one of their secondary victory animations from the GameCube-era Mario Party games (with Mario's and Luigi's being slightly different) instead of the new ones they received in this game. Blooper and Hammer Bro will perform their own new secondary victory animations as opposed to their normal ones. This is also the case in Thrash 'n' Crash.
